For those wondering… It’s aged in ex bourbon casks for 3 years, then moved to a new lot of ex bourbon casks for a further 2 years. It’s made exclusively from South African yellow maize/corn (mielies as South Africans would say) which is why it’s so chewy and mouth coating. Fermentation times are ~72hrs Only middle cut points Palletised warehouse storage with ~5% angel share per year Unfortunately it is partially filtered, and coloured just a tad to keep consistency on store shelves. It’s a great easy drinker and especially enjoyable on the rocks in summer while still being engaging enough should you want to nose and appreciate. The older bottlings such as the 15yo or 18yo Fino cask finish are incredible

Mind-boggling why they finish in the same cask type that they mature in. But hey... if it works...

@@WhiskyLock it was to achieve something different from the rest of the market as well as meeting the needs of the emerging local market who preferred a sweeter whisky. Maturing for a full 5 years in the original casks would have imparted less of the desired flavour as the wood extraction diminishes l

Whoops! Sorry! I initially missed that you got the idea to review Bain’s from Whisky Lovers’ Society! Gert is awesome! Cheers!

Great review of an excellent value straightforward international dram. Perhaps I've been lucky in my experience with well aged grain whiskies, but I've just finished off a 31 year old Girvan from MoM that was superb and showed great maturity and depth of flavour. It prompted me to buy a 25 year old Invergordon from the Good Spirits Co which is also awesome, albeit a bit more youthful and spirity.

If you like it and it's good value then have at it! We all have different tastes. I've never been that impressed with old grain but (unlike many) I do get some value enjoyment out of well made young grain. Maybe one day I'll find some old grain that I warm to as well. Cheers 🥃

I enjoy Bain's. Yes, very, very simple but it does that well. Cheers!

Absolutely! It's a style. Different to single malt. Not better. Not worse. But very good and I'd buy another. Cheers mate 🥃

There was an interview somewhere in KZfaq in which the owner of the distillery explained all the details of the production, and even let the reviewer taste the new make, the single cask maturation and the final double cask maturation liquids. As far as I remember, he lets the grain new make mature in ex-bourbon for 2 years and then in virgin oak for 3 years, and he came with this recipe on the fly, because he didn't like how weak it was when mature exclusively in ex-bourbon. It is an interesting bottle, it's flavorful and pleasant, but too watery and simple for my current taste. It is way closer to a bourbon than to an Scotch, IMHO.

Thanks. I'll have to seek out that video. Virgin oak for the second maturation makes a little more sense than two short bourbon maturation. Agreed that this has a strong bourbon profile. Great for an occasional change of scenery considering the price though 👍

Could be a hit. Just saw the tasty Toki in Waitrose doing the rounds for £29. Hard to beat those Black Bottle specials though. Cheers. WT

Thanks for the heads up. I had a bottle of Toki a few years ago. Decent quality and value stuff. Not many of those coming out of Japan anymore. Cheers 🥃

This one disappointed me. Too thin and watery to me. Just not enough there overall

Normally it's me complaining about underpowered spirits! I didn't have that problem with this one though. A rare case. I can definitely sympathise with your problem though!

@@WhiskyLock I sincerely apologise. There have been a lot of very strange things happening to my comments recently on various channels. Many of my comments for other channels have simply disappeared from under the videos as well as not appearing in the KZfaq Comments History. There are some channels where my comments are instantly deleted. However, my comments on your channel remained in the Comments history, yet it seemed as if they were being ignored or being ghosted. Again, I really do apologise. As I said, strange things have been happening.

@@RebMordechaiReviews No problem Reb. KZfaq does a lot of strange things. Perhaps strangest of all is that the actual spam always seems to get through...

It's not everyone's favourite company (and for good reason) but I've found Bains on Amazon for a really good price before. If you get one of their discounts then it's an amazing buy.
