The amazing video at Physical Culture Historians: • Greatest Indian Club S...
This video examines the way Baki trains in the manga and anime. Baki is about the most over-the-top anime in terms of its depiction of training and fighting. This is a guy who can contort the muscles of his spine to look like a demon's face and who carries entire gyms up mountains.
While we can't precisely repicate the Baki workout then, we can ask what the most badass training methods would be for a martial artist/grappler. We can look at the spirit of Baki training and create a routine that will make you feel like a character from the series AND seriously level up your strength, stamina, and speed.
This is: Baki training!

I noticed one thing wrong here: 03:28 "You can't create muscle damage or metabolic stress in the muscles that aren't directly involved in a movement". I can confirm, with my personal experience, that muscles that are indirectly involved, could be damaged and trained as well. A stupid but basic example is training abs doing pushups.

One important thing I think is important in Baki training and you forgot to mention, it's his power of visualization. I usually train thinking that he has more weight or carring something very heavy, like when he was ruuning at school. Beside, visualization is what make it possible for him to fight a mantis and be prepare to fight Retsuo, becuase he fight like if was a rela fight and can feel the pain, even bleed. And visualization is a real thing, a lot of fighters do it, and later the win exactly like they predicted or rock climbers, than need to learn how to 'read' the route before trying and do all the moves mentally beforehand.

1:00 Glad you said it. Baki's training is super cool on paper but it won't get you looking like him. All the characters have pro-bodybuilder physiques that would already be hard to achieve with a straight up focus on aesthetics and size. Then you take into account that the Demon Back literally entails having extra muscle groups that only the Hanma possess which makes all of the videos about building one sort of silly in my opinion. It'd be like trying to grow an extra limb lol. That being said in terms of martial arts and calisthenics Itagaki definitely did his homework as most of the stuff showed is realistic to an extent; it's just that the results of the training (controlling endorphins, insane size & fighting strength etc) aren't.

I feel like too many people think that if you train super functionally then you’ll get a body like an anime character (like Gokus or Bakis), but, guys that truly had “anime level feats” (guys like Gamma and Charles Bronson) don’t have the best physiques. Not saying that you’re not gonna look good doing functional training, but if you’re after the body you should be doing bodybuilder style training. Love your stuff man 👍

The best movement I’ve ever used was weighted rucking. 60ish lbs, up to 85, or 110 if one wants to get radical...uphill continuous hiking added slabs or muscle to my quads and turned my calves into diamonds. The pavel “what the hell” effect, which seems simple enough to explain, but the upper back and trap response to constantly having a weighted pack on is insane. If one exercise will turn you into the “Greco Roman wrestler physique,” it is rucking weight uphill and down for hours on end everyday. Not ready applicable or easily done for most people, but doing wildland fire or any number of jobs that put you through that will lead to some excellent gains. Combining in kettlebell work, and running, and I’ve peaked here while working an excessive amount of hours per day, often times for two weeks straight. Muay Thai never gave me a “fighters physique” in terms of just looking like brute, this is as close to a fighters physique as I’ve came though ironically enough

Hey awesome video loving it as well as the blog, truly love both reading and watching your blog and videos respectively. Will we get a training modality video and how to combine them in order to maximize the benefits from each(polarized training, threshold training, high volume, etc..)? BTW Will we get an anime workout talking about Goku, Asta, Deku, and other Shonen protagonista and how their super high rep range and their individual training can help us develop a whole new level of functionality?

I went and marathoned Baki (old, new, and that goofy "Son of Ogre" season that's listed separately for some reason) after seeing a this video, and a short clip of Yujiro when he kicked the tip of a cigarette. I am absolutely inspired by it and love the channel for stuff just like this.

Can you make a video on best home equipment to invest in for functional strength:training like you preach? Highest bang for your buck home gym set up would be a wonderful video especially during quarantine where many of us don’t have access to a gym. Love your stuff

Kettle bells(ballistic strength, explosive strength, irregular object training), Indian clubs(irregular object training, ballistic strength, grip), resistance bands(you can do exercises standing up which will apply more for the real world(If you want get boxbandz), pull-up bar(pretty self explanatory), gymnastics rings(gymnast strength(found myself a decent pair for $19 will send a link later)), some rocks(grip, bone/skin hardening) , some sand(grip, finger strength, penetrating strength) , some water(penetrating strength, if you have a pool this will be great for resistance in your workout, temperature regulating) (these three for some VERY creative workouts) A towel(grip(wrap it around other things to increase diameter so you workout your forearms as well as your grip)),your own bodyweight, leftover whey protein jar(grip and weights), dometool super gripper(this one is a little pricey but you save alot if you're developing grip strength, & battle ropes(resistance cardio) if anyone else wants to add something go ahead

This reminds me of old-shool Judokas like Masahiko Kimura, performing thousand Hindu pushups the same way Indian wrestlers do in Kushti, for a better sprawl/wrestling defense and thousand fireman carry squats for a stronger lower body and thicker thighs for single/double leg takedowns (This was traditional Judo before IJF banned lower body attacks in Olympic Judo), also Kimura performed a lot of grappling against a tree that it was rumored he knocked down his trainees with just a leg sweep, and Caucasian grapplers like Aleksander Karelin, whom also implements high-volume calisthenics and kettle bell movements over heavy lifts. This is why some of them even look like Saiyans even before the age of performance enhancement drugs, huge traps and neck, thick thighs, and veins popping all over the place. That is why old-school grappler's training is timeless, even Baki implements them!

Hey Adam, I’m currently in the military and I’ve been using Tactical Barbell as my fitness plan to great effect. I’ve just recently read your super functional training book and it’s peaked my interest. Do you think your training method has a place in military fitness, rather than the more barbell, big 3 focused plan that TB offers? Think itd be a great video too
