Hungarian is often rated as one of the world's most hardest languages, just behind Japanese, Chinese, and Arabic. In this video we dissect what makes this language so hard, as we take a look at Hungarian grammar and how it works.

I know what you mean from experience. I live in Budapest for the past 23 years and I still wonder why Hungarians say things the way they say. Even my Hungarian wife cannot explain it. So, the best way to learn it is to listen to spoken language and learn how they speak the entire sentences. I did that when my son was learning Hungarian when he was small and listened to his mother talking to him first and then with him when he started to speak. I simply assimilated entire sentences and figures of speech by heart. Only later I started to understand their meaning. Hungarian is very difficult to learn in order to speak it. Even understanding it is hard at first. You need at least 5 years to learn how the words are pronounced and which word is what part of the language.

@@nacsesz89 as a language interested HU native: if I may add my 2 cents as to why the sentence at 4.20 "vàltoztattam uborkàvà magam " is wrong: Id argue, it hase more semantic rather than only synactic reasons: the word order would put stress on the verb "vàltoztattam" ie that it is not some other action you did to turn yourself into a uborka. However in this special case there is not really another option for the verb, at least in standard context I imagine about this topic 😅 I think this is the reason why it sounds nonsensical to a native speaker. In contrast if you consider the situation where various verbs/actions may be considered, you may put the verb first to stress that it is this specific: Immigrate vs came to visit: "Elköltöztem Magyarorszàgra" = I *moved* ti HU VS "Làtogatóba jöttem MOra"= I *came to visit* HU. There are a bit more subtle aspects as what variant of the verb youd use using it in a stressed position, probably not just "vàltoztattam" (vs àt/el/vàltoztattam) but I am not sure about this as I do it intuitively in my native tongue. (The word order induced stress in Hungarian feels more subtle, less brutal than the bold face stress in the english)

@dedeede4762
@dedeede4762 2 жыл бұрын
@@benedict6432 Wait, let me try to translate it for some unforsaken souls "Hát geci behalsz" rough translation : "Well cum u-gon-die-inside" Behalsz is gramatically incorrect, and is something along the lines of, meghalsz: you are going to die, but switching "meg" with "be", creating an abomination, which somewhat means "inside-death", but we ourselves don't exactly know what it means. Geci means cum, but in such a vulgar way, that cum does not give it justice, jizz would be somewhat better, but it still sounds "soft" whilst geci is something you can shout when you drop a refrigerator on your foot. And lastly "hát" would be best described as a sigh between "well" and "now". So with all that, imagine that you're a 16 year old girl meeting with her friend and as you begin telling your weird story, you mentally prepare her with the following sentence: "Well-now, you're gona cum die" I hope my explanation was somewhat entertaining if not useful.
@benedict6432
@benedict6432 2 жыл бұрын
@@dedeede4762 "geci is something you can shout when you drop a refrigerator on your foot" that's the most accurate and beautiful way to describe it. And you're also right with the "cum is not vulgar enough" part, I also think that when it comes to hungarian swearing, it's hard to describe them in english, because how versatile it can get. Because if you say "a kurva rákos szűzgeci" you can only try to translate that. Like what you gon say "that bitch cancerous virgincum"? Sounds kinda stupid in english not gon lie

Hungarian language was created for 1 purpose: literature. It's hard to compare poems in different languages, I speak 4 (native Hungarian, English, French, Spanish) but Hungarian poetry is standing out so much you can't imagine. Even the poems written in p.e. French sound much better when literary translation is made, so a poet speaking Hungarian translates the poem. The poetry of Villon was translated by a Hungarian poet called György Faludy, the Hungarian versions are much-much better 😀😀😀 Not to mention English language which is closer to sign language than to Hungarian, so basic - maybe that's why it is used so broadly besides the colonization.

Off course you learned the words naturally in every form but that's parrot level. But the grammatical rules behind them wasn't natural. And foreign speaker had to learn the grammar first before they start to speak. They just don't have 7-8 pre school years to learn words and sentences.

The reference to a geographic areas can seem daunting to the novice, but it is not that complicated in fact: - if the name ends in -föld (land) like Szváziföld or the historic Németalföld, you always say -földön - if the name ends in -ország (land) like Franciaország, you say -országban; except for Magyarország itself - if the name ends in something else, like Kanada or Csád, you say -ban or -ben - if it is an island like Bali, Haiti or Madagaszkár, you say -on -en -ön (or -n), except for cases when you don't,, typically for island nations or historic island nations such as: Japán_ban, Szicíliá_ban (but note: Korziká_n) - if it is a continent you say -ban, excepf for Antarktisz, which is -on I hope this clarifies this rule which is quite simple if you look at it from this angle.

@@tibixdev It does yes. not every single case obviously, but many things are similar. like sounds for example. with japanese too. the grammar is not as hard to grasp for us as it is for other foreigners. both korean and japanese are still hard though, don't get me wrong. But generally we have an easier time with them from what I've seen. (I study both languages in university). We have absolutely zero common words, we are also completely unrelated languages before anyone thinks this is what i mean by "similar". we just happen to have grammar that's similar in places and a few common sounds. about sounds: if you speak hungarian you pretty much already know how to pronounce everything in both korean and japanese, except for the "u" in japanese and the "eu" in korean, but if you studied slavic languages before, you know both of these too since they are the yeru sound (the "ы" in russian). What does remain hard for us in japanese for example is the writing. Korean writing is super easy, no need to worry about it, but the Kanjis (characters imported from chinese) in japanese (and a there are a few in korean too) are a nightmare unless you have a great memory. ----------------------- There is also a case of the dreaded l/r sound in both korean and japanese, I forgot to mention this but the commenter below me reminded me so i'll edit this part in here. The l/r sounds in those two languages are significantly different to ours, and they are hard to learn. But thankfully as foreigners we aren't expected to get it 100% right. So in conclusion there are two sounds that are hard for us, the "l/r" and the "u" and "eu", but apart from those the rest of the sounds are pretty easy since we have them also in hungarian (and some more)

I took Hungarian lessons at the university for two semesters and while the grammar was super cool and interesting, the teaching style didn't fit me so I learnt almost nothing when it came to actually using the language. But now that I hear you speak about it, I wanna try all over again. I just think it's super cool how different it is from most other European languages. Also it's an agglutinative language, also something that in Europe is (I think?) specific only for Uralic languages. Oh, but also that word order that expresses what's the most important part of the sentence? That sounds pretty much the same as what we do in Czech. Of course, I'd need someone who speaks both Czech and Hungarian to confirm if it's really used the same way.

Fun story: I remember when I was a little boy traveling from the Czech Republic to my grandmother in southern Slovakia (near Komárno) where people spoke Slovak but otherwise only spoke Hungarian, that for me, Hungarian seemed like a language from an alien planet. One day I went for a walk with my mother and grandmother and listened carefully to their conversation in Hungarian. It was as if they had declared war, sent each other to eternal hell, and wished for an imminent death of each other. When the two women started laughing and smiling, It confused me very much so i asked what they were talking about. Their answer was that they were talking mostly about the weather and then they planned a trip to Patince (swimming in thermal springs). Since then, I have preferred not to ask anything during further conversations in Hungarian. :D

I am learning Hungarian for half a year now and so far I'm just utterly in love. I haven't arrived at "meg" yet, though xD The rest you mentioned I have learned and while I am still somewhat struggling with the two conjugations (especially when the easy rule doesn't work? Like why is it Egy etteremben dolgozom and not dolgozok??? There isn't even an object in that sentence XD) they start to ~feel~ different and that's just coooool :> I learned Japanese before Hungarian and it's so exciting to see the random similarities :D ( "case" grammar and loose word order) I also speak German and I guess you can see how those languages coexisted in a country because a lot of ways of saying things work the same. Like "this jacket suits you" would be "this jacket stands you" in both languages. German also has some dialect words that always confused me as a kid like "Paradeiser" which would literally translate to something like "a person from paradise" and it means tomato.... Turns out paradicsom is Hungarian for tomato. Or "Palatschinken" for pancake which literally would mean "Palat-ham" but comes from the Hungarian word palacsinta. *happy* The only thing that truly fucks me up currently is that for "I have a fork" you say "my fork exists" even if it isn't your own fork??? like what if you come to my house and i hand out forks to everyone and then I ask whether anyone is still missing a fork and then the person says "my fork exists"... huh?! and then if Max doesn't have a fork yet someone might tell me "By Max his fork does not exist". That just sounds so big for such small content - god I love this language!

dolgozom and dolgozok is a bullshit tbh 😂 i think it's simpler to understand if there is an object that connects to the verb (drinking tea) "én teát iszok" - is like a habit I do, "én teát iszom" - is what I'm doing right now. but don't listen to me. sometimes it doesn't even matter while talking 😂 and I laughed at "my fork exist". it's true how you wrote it but there are many ways to say that I have a fork. "én birtoklok egy villát" & "birtokomban van egy villa" & "van nálam villa". probably "én birtoklok egy villát" is the closest to the english sentence, but "van" is the one that sounds right and modern. - a language enthusiast hungarian ❤

Lucky you :))) I admit if I would be a foreigner I couldn't learn my language, well even German gave me headaches as a foreign language especially the gender pronouns, like why is a Madchen neutral? In a sense it is, but.....we havent got gender pronouns thats why I smile on this American "woke" gender neutral pronoun thing.... Palacsinta actually comes from an Italian word Palachinto meaning made in the palace.... in middle ages the Royal Household made for guests...comes from a famous Hungarian King's wife, Beatrice, who was Italian. Actually we say the Paradise and tomato in the same word, maybe the old word was paradicsomgyümölcs..meaning Paradeis Obst constrained to paradise We have many loanword from German the most profilic for me is "muszály" from "muss ein" which has got its own history :)

For your "fork" topic: If I say "my fork" it is a genitive relation (in hungarian: én villám). If I say "I have a fork" or "I have fork" it is also a genitive relation, in hungarian: "Én bírok egy villát" or "Bírom a villát") Sometimes we use this form "bír" that does mean - in another context - in english "bear" /as a werb/. But usually when we say: I have a fork" or "I have fork" ... does mean "(Nekem) van egy villám" or "(Nekem) van villám". Worthy to note that the "nekem van" is a dative relation! The meaning: There is (something) FOR ME! It is absolute same like in english: "There is..." construction. It means : "exists..." It exists for me (and not for you)! Here comes the genitive relation, the "to have" and " my own fork". Similar in german: Es gibt FÜR MICH! So when we - hungarians - say "I have" we say always "there is (a fork) for me" or "the fork is (exists) for me! So it is mine (my fok and not yours). Finally an interesting example from english. In the Lord's Prayer text (in old english) you will find: "For thine is the kingdome, and the power, and the glory ... ". So today we could say "the Kingdom is yours". Sometimes we recognize that the English used to this dative form in the past. So by this example you can discover that the hungarian language did not change for half of Century.

as a hungarian myself, i can say that this video discribes the language very well. it is indeed a very strange language fun fact: you can conjugate verbs in two ways: írok egy könyvet (i write a book) and írom a könyvet (i write the book) are similar but have different meanings. i was 17 when my hungarian teacher pointed the two ways to conjugate verbs. until then, i simply just didnt notice the existence of this concept in the gibberish language i speak (also: this fun fact was in the video too, but it is still a weird concept)

as a romanian, i cannot learn hungarian, because i consider it very hard and weird. like, am i literally the only one who thinks of stuff like: "how on earth is the letter, 's', always pronounced as in, 'sugar' and how the hell does, 'sz', sound like the, 's', in, 'simple'? also, why does the, 'zs', sound like the romanian, 'j' and who ever thinks that, 'csongor', is not pronounced like, 'ksongor'?"? i guess that hungarian is way too much for me, but do not get me wrong, i do not hate hungary, nor the hungarians,. like, i believe that the suffix thingy is not the hard part, as it is for the double and triple letters, as well as for the fact that there is the vowel harmony.
@T_PLAYER
@T_PLAYER 2 жыл бұрын
@@anndreh_zteffan yeah, lets not talk abut s and sz. but zs makes sence, bcause ,,z"+,,sh" makes that sound. also, in hungarian and slavic languages c is pronounced ,,ts" (like in japanese too), and ,,ts"+,,sh" make the cs sound. gy kinda makes sense too also, ly is now pronounced exactly like j, but this wasnt the case a couple hundred years ago. the correct way to pronounce ly is now extinct, but the double letter is still used
@anndreh_zteffan
@anndreh_zteffan 2 жыл бұрын
well, i guess that, 'zs', makes sense and if you were to take it that way, so does, 'sz', because it is like wanting to say, 'sh', but you position your tongue in the same way as saying , 'z', but since it starts with an s, you remove the buzz that z has. i know about the sound that c makes and i guess that it makes a lot of sense, but the actual way of spelling the, 'cs', sound, in the internation phonetic alphabet, is something like, 'tsh', but it still makes sense. also, i know about, 'ly' thing and that it is pronounced exactly like a j, as well as the fact that the original pronunciation was lost, since it happened the same to spanish, too. the original pronunciation was a, 'lj, if i am not wrong; just like the, 'lh', in the portugues word, 'mulher', which is to be read as, 'muljer'.

I mean, the rules are pretty complex but once you've grasped a Hungarian rule, it applies pretty consistently, with (very) few exceptions. It's a very subtle idiom and a delight for an educated mind. @@nemo-x Not quite. There is a group of verbs which refuse to take stress (they can be considered irregular in this respect), and 'változtat' is one of these. 'átváltoztattam uborkává magam' or 'tegnap változtattam uborkává magam' or 'a konyhában változtattam uborkává magam' or 'nem változtattam uborkává magam' or 'uborkává változtattam magam' are all okay, the point is that 'változtattam' can remain unstressed if there is something in front of it at the beginning of the comment part of the sentence which takes the stress, and this is why 'változtattam uborkává magam' is not grammatical.
