Chris Packham, Ruth Tingay and Mark Avery (Wild Justice) believe that intensive grouse shooting is bad for people, the environment and wildlife.
People; grouse shooting is economically insignificant when contrasted with other real and potential uses of the UK’s uplands.
Environment; muirburn impacts negatively upon climate change and drainage leads to flooding and erosion.
Wildlife; the wholesale culling of all predators and Mountain Hares has a disastrous effect on the ecology of these areas and the industry is underpinned by a criminal tradition of raptor persecution which shows no signs of abating.

A total of 22 hen harrier chicks fledge from managed grouse moors according to RSPB figures , these were from five different nests on Moorland in the Forest of Bowland. Curlew numbers are only growing on keepered grouse moors according to GWCT. Oh I am so surprised (not) that Chris conveniently forgot to mention these facts and from the man who wants to protect corvids that decimate nests.

86% of those convicted of raptor persecution in Scotland, from 2004 to 2014, were gamekeepers. Thus demonstrating that they're not trustworthy in regards to raptors. Petition signed and shared, with links to the data, on both Facebook page and group: Support Chris Packham

How very convenient that you use data from those dates and limited to Scotland. Expand you data to see how many raptors were successfully fledged from grouse moors managed by gamekeepers compared to those not managed, the data is available from RSPB. If you activist succeed in banning grouse shooting then there will be even less raptors fledging from nests due to unmanaged predators. Like it or hate it the evidence is there from the antis favourite organisation the charity RSPB that gamekeepers on grouse moors rear more raptors than any where else. Unfortunately for townie antis, most of whom would not know a managed grouse moor from a non managed moor or a school playing field, that the Raptors preferred the habitat found on managed moor.

You conveniently forget that Hen Harriers are 300% more likely to survive their first year if they are born in Orkney (no grouse moors) than if they were born on a grouse moor. You're welcome for the facts

@@mikes8917 The facts are clear. Hen harriers almost went extinct in the UK thanks to grouse moors. 14 breeding pairs in England this year - considered a massive success - says it all. If grouse moors aren't killing Hen Harriers, who is killing them and magically destroying their satellite tags? Have foxes worked out how to destroy the tags and leave no evidence?

No one cares about how they “protect” the moors. They are killing endangered birds of prey on many moors. Plus if they gave the moors over to wildlife only lightly managing them they could bring in millions of pounds for the economy through ecotourism. And you might think this will put people out of business but there’s probably double the amount of jobs at a moor reserve then there are at a grouse moor

Do you really think that gamekeepers would kill the eagles on their own estate? Really? Do you think they would be that stupid? And how does Packham know they have been killed? It's just their trackers which are not responding, which happens far more than he will tell you. What about the red grouse estate in Yorkshire that was blamed for the disappearance of a hen harrier, which then reappeared of few weeks later, their was no "sorry we were wrong to blame the gamekeepers" (again), no just said nothing. Also, I know Packham has a loathing of keepered moors, but why does he always say that they are just a mono culture of just red grouse? He can not be that stupid, I think he just does not want to admit it as it would go against his wanting to ban grouse shooting. Where I live, next door to a keepered grouse moor, I have hundreds of wading birds nesting every spring, Lapwing, Oyster catchers, Curlews, Red shanks, Green shanks, Snipe, when else where in the country their numbers are dropping. Why? Because of gamekeepers keeping vermin numbers down, not only protects red and black grouse, but all other ground nesting birds.

@TheNatureLover by game keeps I take it you mean gamekeepers. Humans are only a threat to ground nesting birds if they, 1) go looking for the nesting birds and purposely disturb them. 2) are very ignorant and walk, especially with dogs, where ground nesting birds are nesting, without a care for said birds. 3) they own cats. Please give me a link to these videos of "game keeps" setting traps for birds of prey. Not just setting traps that are legal, or of people pretending to be gamekeepers acting illegally.

@77willnot

@@aldi3369 I know that is what they eat, but people (including conservation groups) want to see an increase in wadding bird numbers, so the only way for that to happen is for the number of their eggs and young to survive by not being eaten by stoats and weasels, and other predators. You could say it is nature for children to die from cancer, and doctors should not be messing about trying to prevent this from happening, just let nature take its course.

@@tiernanwearen9499 Unfortunately this is what happens when gun ownership is viewed as a "privilege" and not as a right - the police can just refuse to bother with applications for whatever reason suits them. Used to shoot mainly clays - purely beause obtaining permissions is so difficult. I'll probably end up shooting mainly clays again, but would ideally look to get pigeons and geese. I've no real interest in driven game - too expensive and too artificial.

Sorry to hear of your loss. Yes, but in what way would be an alternative to that fashion of Land Management ? To me, I was never invited to go shooting much more than a target . And, my initiative was only to shoot in the countryside. But , it was trouble anyway. And certainly guns are not tolerated for long, in the city ! But, more guns might create a more polite society. But throwing all that lead around does sound a bit mad, and also even throwing copper is not that healthy either on later reflection. But if some mad lead throwing loons want to do that, not many could stop them ! And, it's a countryside thing really. Sure, if the land was for sale. Just what , might someone do, to make more money than having a grouse shoot ? They cleared The Highlands perhaps for sheep to live there , but surely Crofting coaxed more out of the land ? Removing shooting maybe is the first stage in. Starting, a bit of bullying and domination. For, folks to get hysterical about a missing Eagle ? I am sorry to hear of the loss of your feathered friend !

I was shocked to hear about the Golden Eagles as well. I have no doubt they were shot out of the sky. Pulling up Auchnafree estate on Google maps shows really one road on to where the eagles disappeared and I doubt very much Joe Public would be going there with a 4X4 or surely the estate owners would be out to see what they were up to. I'm assuming the raptors disappear in high numbers around the time the grouse chicks are running around, making them easy prey for raptors who probably also have mouths to feed back on their nests? Can't have any threat to the upcoming festival (sic) on the 12th? Police should have looked closely at tyre tread marks on the ground, mobile phone signals, if there is a signal out there, to see whose phones were logged in and the time, and a forensic examination of estates 4X4's (blood, feathers, bits of plastic). Might not prove anything but a few people could be "sweating under their collar". Penalties need to be strong (jail), lifetime revoke of the gun license, to send a shock wave through the estate mangers, groundsmen due to the ease they get away with these crimes. Grouse shooting should go the way of fox hunting, smoking etc in being socially unacceptable in today's society. I can understand the need of estate owners to keep predator numbers down, but that's not the case here.
