There is no case for HS2 in 2021. Costs have more than doubled since it was voted on in Parliament & it won't be carbon neutral until well beyond 2050, our target for achieving Net Zero.

I’ll be honest I never used to agree with hs2 cos of all the unnecessary tree felling and all the habitats destroyed, but after really thinking about it does have benefits to the environment such as less pollution as there will be less lorry’s running up and down country, furthermore why are we protesting against something that’s inevitably gonna happen, instead I think we should be working on creating other wildlife habitats in other woodlands. So in my mind there is definitely pros and cons to hs2

Politicians care nothing for wildlife or the environment, its all about jobs taxes and looking after the rich landowners for their blood sports, I'm 70 and have seen the destruction of ponds woodlands which is still going on, the landowners do not care care about wildlife apart from a handful, the councils and been perpetually removing green from the cities and building where there used to be lizards etc, yet when the local elections come around they suddenly put on their green hats, its far worse then you think with areas devoid of wildlife yes sterilized, I find it very sad and upsetting.

👍 #195 Hi Chris, I hope you are well. Thank you as always for doing everything in your power to spread the word and help protect our Wildlife & Birds. I HATE this HS2 project and the way it bludgeons through ancient woodlands, chopping down many of our oldest surviving trees en-route and destroying woodland and endless habitats. But that will not be the end of it, in fact nowhere near! Housing estates and other destructive developments are swiftly given planning permissions aside roads and railways and opportunities for those will arise for sure. Our countryside is diminishing rapidly and the remaining nuggets of beauty will become busy with walkers and picnickers and subsequently ruined as our 'special and quiet places for wildlife etc. I have already signed the petition of course and support any actions that help put a stop to this sort of immeasurable destruction. Thank you again and please stay healthy and continue your sterling work 👍◕‿◕

We could have easily done more rail lines but just regular speed trains. And built them right next to or above motorways. How hard would that have been? Not at all, it’s the norm in Asia. Now we can work remotely, we should be focusing on slow travel. Sleeper trains and soon self driving cars. The speed of travel doesn’t matter and you’ll have 5G or wi-fi the whole way anyway.

@@peterwilliamallen1063 Well Peter to many people that must be a good thing and maybe necessary for some, but one thing that the last 12 months has shown is that we don't necessarily need to travel at all, or at least not as often. Many business men used concord to get to New York in just 3 hours, but that didn't seem to matter when they scrapped it. For me, I'm not against progress and improvement, but I am against the gradually destruction of the natural world. I find it incredibly terrifying that in my lifetime alone we have lost more than 60% of all life on earth. Not obvious to most people as it is a gradual process, but really, what will be left for our children and their children? This worries me massively. So my question is this, do we really need it and is it essential? I could go and buy a big 4 wheel drive to get me from A-B on normal roads with just a couple of passengers. Do I really need it or am I just showing off and flashing my cash? The only people to benefit from this venture would be the car manufacturers and dealers as I would spend a damn sight more than I need to. When I first went to East Africa in the early 90s there was more wildlife, birds and mammals, than I can ever see now. Here in the UK I could watch a varied amount of wildlife on my doorstep, that now very sadly has gone, due to habitat loss and destruction of green spaces and trees. Many people in power don't seem to recognise that we are all inexplicably linked to the natural world and slowly we a killing our spaceship that sustains us all, bit by bit, little by little, all in the name of progress and development. The problems are getting worse. So yes HS2 is great and will be quicker and faster. It is only one more development and just a small loss of ancient woodland, (on the grand scale that is,) but seriously, would you like to get to London a few minutes (30-40 or so) quicker, or would you rather have a better future for our children and their children, where they can still marvel at the same things I saw and the things David Attenborough made programmes about, where they can live in peace and harmony and are NOT dying in a world struggling to survive, because their ancestors or forefathers just kept on destroying, polluting and killing nature? Just because they could!
@peterwilliamallen1063
@peterwilliamallen1063 2 жыл бұрын
@@davehilliard7 Firstly HS2 is not just for business commuters, it is also for tourist and normal rail travellers initially from Birmingham to London as it will replace 98% of train services between Birmingham New Street and London Euston allowing more local and freight trains to run on the existing line, giving you 40 mins either end of your journey will help a lot of commuters when using 250 to 300mph trains non stop in some cases and yes office workers are going back to work now. The case for nature is null and void as if you watch the official HS2 sites not other crap like Chris Packham's, you will see that as HS2 is completed new balancing lakes are being built where wild life will flourish and new tree's are being planted which will mature very quickly. As for your Kids and Grand Children in the future, well they will moan there heads of due to the negative attitude of us today not building this high speed railway and not being able to get to far distant places because their electric car has not charged properly or has run out of power and they can not find a charge point or worse still because of too many electric cars the National Grid fails, well a prime example of pollution is the Earth polluting itself with the Volcano erupting on one of the Canary Islands, that in itself is more destructive in it's own right than an all Electric Railway plus a polluting motorway. Even in bygone days of horse and carts, there was pollution when men, women, cattle and horses farted so answer that one, every time you have a Chinese or Indian curry you fart and pollute the atmosphere.
@davehilliard7
@davehilliard7 2 жыл бұрын
@@peterwilliamallen1063 Peter first of all I haven't meant to antagonise you, which from your tone I seem to have done. I did ask a serious question though and that was, do you want a world devoid of wildlife and that is naturally poorer because of our actions, where people are struggling because the world is struggling, due to what has been lost? You see, I believe that HS2 will happen and it will be successful, because that is what we do. We are brilliant at finding solutions and making things work, even though we make some mistakes along the way and no matter what the cost in some cases. I am also sure that I will marvel at the engineering achievement and feel proud that Britain has a super fast train. People will not miss what they have not seen or what they are not aware of, I'm talking about ecology and wildlife here. If you haven't ever needed something then you don't miss it. That's called Base Line Syndrome. We all suffer from it to some degree. For me personally, I don't think HS2 is essential and I really think we have lost far too much of our ecology over the past few hundred years already, so I'm not against HS2, but I don't agree with all the destruction it is causing. As far planting trees and creating wetlands, that's great, but it doesn't make up for what has been lost. It can't, well not for at least 3-400 years. Not sure HS2 will still be there then. The point I was making wasn't just about HS2, it was about the destruction of nature in general, on a world wide scale. Like I said, HS2 is just a small part, a very small part, but it all adds up. Most people in the developed world cannot make the connection with nature or wildlife so why does it matter. I know because very few people can, that would include most of my friends. However, for me, I seem to be cursed as all I have ever known is the demise of our planet at the hands of man. Whether it be plastic in the oceans or the ozone layer, it all down to us. At the current rate of decline there will be very little left for our grandkids, but I really hope and pray that I am wrong. You are correct about the need for power and electric cars etc, but they still need generated power. That power must come from somewhere. Maybe we all need to stop travelling quite so much, but I also know that the technology for hydrogen powered engines has been around for about 30 years or more. Petrol and diesel has been obsolete for a long time, but the patents and designs have been bought up by the oil giants, or so I have read in credible newspapers and magazines. You are also right about the fact that methane is far more damaging than CO2 as a Greenhouse gas, but I don't think I mentioned climate change or CO2 previously, I was just referring to the loss of natural habitat and wildlife. By the way, its not just farting that produces methane, its cows ruminating as they belch up the methane. I believe there is a lot of methane trapped under the frozen tundra, that is set to escape if things continue, causing a massive tipping point, that no amount of good from HS2 will ever alleviate. I hope I'm wrong about that too. As for volcanoes, well we have always had those, pumping out lots of noxious stuff, but the Earth seems to be able to deal with it, as we have previously had lots of forests and plankton worldwide that could absorb it. You see for me, I also think that its the loss of the forests and eco-systems that is perhaps causing climate change, possibly more than any emissions, a bit like removing one of your lungs, you too would be breathless and feel the effects. Though you could still recover. So back to our future generations, I really don't think they will moan about the lack of charging points or high speed rail, those things are happening and no doubt will come to be, but I do think they may blame us for destroying the planet or damaging it very badly and causing lots of things to become extinct. They may say 'why did you allow it, could you have not done these things without damaging everything, could you not have been more careful'? 'Did you not care about us'? I feel ashamed of that and the harm we are causing, as a race that is. Now some people do care, but I also know that many people don't, or do not seem to care. Why should they? Hopefully Peter, we will have a future where we learn to repair the damage we have done and put right some of the wrongs. Nature can recover, we just have to give it chance. We ALL have to give it chance.

Being interested in Geography, History and Railways, over the years of my life I have seen many things, from the smog's of the late 1950's / early 1960's, a combination of smoke and fog which lasted for days stunk of sulphur and at times made the air look yellow, this was caused by the mass use of coal for domestic heat, Rail Travel Steam Engines and most factories using coal for manufacturing, then there was the type of petrol and motor vehicles belching out blue smelly exhaust fumes and Gas lighting in the streets so the environment was an utter disaster, then came the clean air zone where by Coal fires in houses were banned and every one turned to Gas Heating or Electric Heating, motor vehicles started to have to pass environmental exhaust emission checks and factories had to change to a different kind of production not using coal, over the late 1960's through the 70's, 80's, 90's and into the 21st century the atmosphere in big Cities such as Birmingham, Manchester and especially London improved immensely to a point smog's disappeared and normal fog was a thing of the past and life became fantastic. Where I live in Birmingham, the City Council got rid of all the Victorian slums and built modern housing with loads of green areas, parks and planted hundreds of trees to a point Birmingham is now the greenest City in Europe with over 500 parks and green area, you go into our green and pleasant land and this is why I find it strange that these green environmentalist are saying that we are destroying our countries environment, which to me is a load of rubbish as I have never seen our air so bright and beautiful. My interest in Geography connects to above, when you look into the Earths History it has been destroying it's self since it was formed, with Earth Quakes and Vulcanic Eruptions over the millennia, prime examples Mount Etna, Monserrat, Vesuvius and the destruction of Pompeii and Herecleum , the Icelandic Volcano of around 10 years ago that grounded all flights in the Northern Atmosphere and the latest one, Las Palma Volcano, all these polluted the atmosphere, so basically man and his petrol car is but a tip of the iceberg to nature, even if we stopped using cars tomorrow the Earth will still pollute it's self, rising tides, well that will always happen, man should not build towns that close to a river and the Earth of millions of years has been in and out of Ice ages every some 1000 years or more, so if the Earth does not destroy it's self the Sun will eventually destroy us in millions of years time. History, if every time a modern thing that man invented was stopped, we probably would still be either walking or riding on Horses with a cart, no the Wright Brothers invented flight and with in 100 odd years we went from planes that were held together by string and could hardly get off the ground to Concorde, the Space Shuttle and vertical take off planes, trains again in 150 years we've gone from an 0-2-2 feeble steam Engine called Rocket travelling around 30 mph to trains that are now starting to travel at 250 to 300 mph, all this is called Human Progress, and Humans will not stand still on progress, hense HS2, this is for our transport needs of the future on which if we do not build it now at what cost it takes, we will go down in history as the most selfish time of humanity, because our grand kids are still travelling on Victorian designed Railways that are clogged up, and then when they suddenly think that HS2 or what ever they would call it is needed it will cost a lot more than it does now and they will hate us for our conservative ideas and think we were stupid, oh you remember I said Birmingham planted a lot of young trees all around Birmingham City Centre in the 1970's, well they matured in about 10 to 15 years into full grown trees, so when HS2 is finished and they have planted these new trees, filled the balancing lakes and seeded the railway embankments, within about 10 years you will hardly see the line of HS2, now if you built a 6 lane motorway with central reservation and two hard shoulders, now that is destroying nature and the environment, so No I am not antagonistic but fed up with people ranting on about HS2 like Chris Packham who more than like lives in a Oxfordshire Mansion driving a Bentley moaning about progress being made and more than likely has never travelled on a train in recent years, this is what you call PROGRESS for every one. These people are called NIMBY's Not in my back yard please.

Hi Chris, sorry dont do twitter, reminds me of Donald Trump! Wanted to ask your thoughts on this. We have nearly three generations of foxes all living here together in Dower Court, York. Surely this is starting to become absurd, I started feeding them just tit bits in a secure environment about three years ago. Other tenants started to do the same. So now we have eight to nine foxes showing up quite clearly living in a family group? Now we have tiny cubs running about the place. Is this behaviour normal that they would live together like this or is it the supply of food versus who gets chased off to find their own?
