where do you think they got there influence from? Literally there sound is based around forest and the lead bass kind of stuff. Forest started playing bass because of non other Steve Digorgio himself then went on to replace him in quo vadis there sound is all driven from death and such as much other complexities they have dont get me wrong they are my favorite band in all honesty but you have to under stand where they come from and on the show they are showing staples in the genre to define it.

@henrywalton5967

@Matt T. it's more progressive but it's not more technical. Maybe If you're just talking about Chuck's solo's and the drums, yeah they probably are more technical. But actually many of the riffs are quite simple unlike ITP. Also the bass is way more technical in ITP, not to mention Andy's solo's. I'm not shitting on TSOP because that's probably my favourite death album right now.

Psycroptic, Beyond Creation, Spawn of Possession,....those should/could be here but no biggie. I think some of these Lock Horns debates can use a "Lock Horns Revisited" series where you guys can go back and look at the genres that were highly debated in the comments or whatnot and bring a new guest to give a fresh or different perspective while trying to slot in some bands maybe you guys just honestly forgot about or didn't have the most knowledge about(Demilich for ex.). I think this could definitely a viable genre for a revisit;)

Frank Reid Nope. Been listening to Death Metal for most of my life and I actually did sound for Nile on one of the dates for their first big solo tour ( back when Pete Hammoura was drumming for them ). Don't get me wrong, they're very talented musicians and some of their songs have very techy parts but I still don't think they really belong on this list.
@NateInferisDerps
@NateInferisDerps 6 жыл бұрын
Damon Scott I strongly disagree even though I love the band. I make that comparison for two reasons: 1) lots of eerie, tremolo picked riffs 2) lots of slow, sludgy parts. You can hear the influence there, particularly on Nephren-Ka. You can disagree with me all you want but claiming that I "don't know what I'm talking about" is pretty goofy.
@NateInferisDerps
@NateInferisDerps 6 жыл бұрын
Well, fuck - I sure did kick a hornet’s nest here… When I think of “Tech Death” as a subgenre, Nile is not one of the bands that springs immediately to mind and I’ll explain my reasoning at greater length now that I have the time to do so. 1) Like a few bands listed here, Nile started off more like a traditional Death Metal band - they did have the addition of Egyptian inspired melodies and some interesting symphonic elements ( which I’d actually argue was the most influential part of their sound ) but if you pay attention to the riffing and song structure on Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren Ka and Black Seeds of Vengeance you’ll find that it is fairly straight forward stuff. A few bursts of flashy playing here and there don’t make a band “Tech Death.” Nile started to edge closer to Tech with In Their Darkened Shrines and Annihilation of the Wicked - the riffing became more complicated and angular…so I’ll grant you that they eventually became a very technical band. 2) Suffocation belongs on this list more than Nile does for the simple fact that a lot of what became conventions of the subgenre, for me at least, have their roots in Pierced From Within. That record really built the template for what became modern Tech Death - rapid time and tempo changes, odd, off-kilter and angular riffs. I was a Junior in High School when that album came out and it blew me away - it was a complete game changer. I’m not denying Nile’s musical skill at all. They’re a great band with a very consistent discography. My argument is more that I really don’t see a record in their catalog that I consider to be a true watershed moment for Tech Death and as such, I think their inclusion on this list is a little iffy. I hope that clarifies my position here.

I wish these episodes were longer, so things could get a little more straightened out, but what are you gonna do? I think it's a bit absurd that Archspire made the list, while actual essential bands like Decapitated, Decrepit Birth, Demilich, Spawn of Possession and Psycroptic were entirely ignored. At least Origin made it in at the end, I was sitting here by myself, losing my shit that they weren't on the list. What happened to talking about where the genre is headed? You guys used to do that at the end of each episode; would love to have seen mention of bands like Blood Incantation and Chthe'ilist.

Hey Dustin thanks for the feedback. We have a few episodes go longer than an hour but what happens is it tends to devolve into a lot of shouting every band name free for all, it doesn't add much debate/discussion. It's a bit weird that when they talk about influential bands of the 90s people don't usually consider monstrosity. It's not like George fisher joined cannibal corpse out of nowhere. Monstrosity is definitely a band that was influential for the rise of this genre. Their riffs where complicated by itself even if their songs weren't as manic as the atheist stuff but they definitely had this core death metal structure along with the complex riffs. Imperial doom was an album that came in 1992 which shows us that they were there right from the start. The bass work in epitaph by Stephan fimmers was heavily inspired by Kelly conlon's work on millennium with the bass licks and solos. Conlon also unsurprisingly played in symbolic so I do feel that this band needs love and recognition.

Maybe these guys need to do a tiny bit of homework but anyways love this show. Canada is this amazing Pandora's box when it comes to technical death metal and also home to bands that are older and more interesting than archspire in my honest opinion. Bands like quo Vadis (my favourite technical death metal band), beyond creation, neuraxis, martyr and augury. Though these bands aren't that obviously famous, they are definitely influential for the establishment of the genre.

Chirag Chittar I've always said that, monstrosity is technical as hell. Especially in those early albums but nobody ever seems to remember them when speaking of " technical death metal". Pat O'Brien said it himself and he's a shredder. " MONSTROSITYS stuff is very technical "

List looks hella weird without Spawn of Possession, and Psycroptic on there. (Debut albums in 2003 and 2001 respectively) I feel like there wasn't put a lot of research into this episode (Especially when they both were like "who the hell is Demilich?") and that's a shame. Nothing against Calum but, if I could've chosen the guest for today I would've gone with Brad from Aggressive Tendencies, as I feel like he's very well versed in Tech Death and could probably have brought some more to the table in terms of suggestions of bands to put on etc.

Short of the osdm revival and more underground slam bands, tech death has infiltrated metalcore, deathcore, all different forms of more brutal death metal, and with bands like Keep of Kalessin, Vektor and Vale of Pnath even merging tech death with black/thrash/power metal it seems like it's foothold is just getting bigger.

They're in a world of shit right now, I understand, but a band with such importance in the tech-death realm deserves to be on here. Nihility and Organic Hallucinosis has some of the best drumming, riffing, shredding, gurgle vocals, and complex arrangements that the style has to offer! Regardless, great episode as always! Folk metal is my specialty so here are my top 10 essentials: Arkona "Goi, Rode, Goi" Moonsorrow "Voimasta ja kunniasta" (or "Kivenkantaja", can't decide) Eluveitie "Slania" Ensiferum "Iron" Equilibrium "Sagas" Finntroll "Nattfodd" Orphaned Land "Mabool" Primordial "To the Nameless Dead" Agalloch "The Mantle" Korpiklaani "Tales Along This Road"

The Zenith Passage, Archspire, Beyond Creation, Unhuman, Singularity, along with Serdce and Cynic are my favorites. I especially like jazzy breakdowns and bass shredding / solos. My list is pretty new school though.

Brutal Death or Brutal Slam definitely has some individual sound ascetics that you will not hear on Melodic, Black, or even sometimes Tech Death. Check out Abominable Putridity, Disentomb, Visceral Disgourge, Kraanium, or even Ingested to get a feel for some sick, raw, sledgehammer brutality. Remember it's only death metal lol

If you place bands like ARCHSPIRE and OBSCURA on the board, I'm missing one other underrated (and yes, also Canadian) band... why is AUGURY not on the board, or do they qualify more as a Prog Death Band?

You have a point with all of the other bands, but Braindrill is wwwwwwaaaaaannnnnnkkkk. The point of tech death is using intense technicality to advance expression. Braindrill is quite possibly the LEAST expressive band I’ve ever heard

I also agree with Benjamin Lord, wheres Demilich??? That one album they put out back in 1992 I believe was so original and brutal, like when Kataklysm started out, they both sound like they are from another planet. Aliens came down to earth and started death metal bands gurgling in an alien language.

I feel these Lock Horns in the Banger Hanger are like Season 3 of the show. Remember the Death Metal Lock Horns was starting Season 2? This definitely feels like a similar amount of upgrade. :) I love this show! (My nitpick: Death was the Legend of Death Metal meaning they can't go on any other chart.)

Eric Adams We welcome comments. Not sure what you've been hearing. We do use moderation to monitor and remove hateful threats to our talent. If you have a critique but can't make a point without resorting to that kind of thing that is unfortunate. But we don't remove negative comments or complaints about the videos. Especially not for a show called Lock Horns.

Because when 50% of your workday is spent monitoring one video which is being deluged with death threats and hate speech against your staff and guests by trolls who don't even watch your channel because you've become the Outrage of the Day, and you've got actual work to do. It was quite unfortunate but we will not let those kinds of comments live on BangerTV.

Death were always ahead of everyone. Leprosy has some super heavy stuff but also has some insane guitar work which other bands didn't get to for several years yet Chuck did it in two albums back to back years. But honestly Death has almost transcended all genres because they're so much more than just a death metal band or even a prog death metal band. Death is just Death.

Now I'm really intrigued about Demilich, who I vaguely remember the name and nothing more. I wonder where a band like The Chasm and Ulcerate fit. They seem pretty technical to me, although very different than Atheist(who I agree for the top spot) and Death(who in the years of evolution, to me sound more like Tech Thrash, rather than tech death, or a least a blend of the two).

anyone browsing the comments looking for bands to try out, these are a bucketful of my favoured Tech bands, in no order whatsoever, that weren't listed; vale of pnath, a loathing requiem, element, decrepit birth, psycroptic, spawn of possession, anata, first fragment, beyond creation, deivos, soreption, incinerate, monumental torment, arkaik, martyr, virulent depravity, burning palace, artificial brain, decapitated, cytotoxin, brain drill, odious mortem, internal suffering, hour of penance, defeated sanity, deeds of flesh, inanimate existence, job for a cowboy, anomalous, infinitum, wormed, hannes grossmann, virvum, aronious some may be considered more technical/brutal DM, others may be more technical/progressive, but they're all fucking great IMO.

I was at an Atheist show in Bradenton Florida in 1992. They were performing material from the “ Unquestionable Presence” album before its release. Standing in the back of the small club with his arms crossed and paying close attention was Chuck Shuldiner. It wasn’t far after that Chuck released “ Human”. Chuck was clearly influenced by Atheist and the technical drumming from Steve Flynn so he went and got Sean Reinert from Cynic and the rest is history!

I disagree with the Pestilence comments. Testimony of the Ancients and Spheres are Technical and Progressive with some Prog Rock (Concept, interludes) and Jazz Fusion leanings, they should definitely be on this list! The timing of these albums were paramount and made a huge impact on the newer bands that started in the late 90s and early 2000s. Consuming Impulse is a masterpiece in Death Metal and the band went and carried the torch even further.
