Can we just appreciate William Fichtner as the bank manager with the shotgun? He's on screen for less than 2 minutes and somehow manages to make his character one of the most memorable in the entire film.

The cinematography in this film is unmatched, especially at 0:09 where joker is just sitting in the middle of the street as the citizens are going about their day, completely oblivious to the chaos that will affect Gotham for the next 8 years

@@g.williams2047 I don't think they were a team. Just professional bank robbers recruited by the joker that were not crazy enough to follow him with the rest of his plans so he had no use for them. Arguably, these henchmen were his best ones.

This opening scene does a great job establishing how smart this Joker is and how he can fix the plan when things go south. The original plan was probably that robber who got killed by the bus would be killed by the one who was shot by the manager, but because the manager killed that guy, Joker lies about how many shots the manager has left in his gun, hoping the next shot would kill that robber, which it didn’t. This causes that robber to figure out that everyone would get killed so there’s be less shares when he talks to the vault opener who had just killed the alarm guy before coming down, so when he confronts Joker, Joker positions him into the position where the bus would enter, which kills him. You can’t deny that this is a genius criminal.

It took me forever to figure out how genius this plan was. He eliminated the rest of the crew, meaning he wouldn't have to worry about getting snitched on. He took care of the head guy, meaning he would be useless to the mob. He definitely made the mob aware of his presence. Blended in so perfectly that the cops would never even question him. And because he was basically unknown (at this point in the movie) Batman basically let's him get away with it by saying he is more interested in the mob. Jokers first move was big and he basically got away with it to fund the rest of his plans. And biggest of all: this is what started the mob to be desperate to need his help. He created a problem that he already had a solution to.

I agree. The Batman’s opening wasn’t nearly as good or epic as this one. It didn’t immediately immerse you into the experience like The Dark Knight did. It takes the next scene to do that. Starting at 4:15, your first thought may be that Joker is walking towards the bank guy just to antagonize him, but you probably didn't notice that Joker stole his shotgun. Then, when Joker crashes the dinner party later in the film, he's wielding the shotgun he stole from the bank. Really cool attention to detail.

Seeing this opening sequence on opening weekend was very intense and well directed by Nolan, but also seeing Billy Fichtner's character the bank manager with shotgun at hand he was not messing around.

"Where did you learn to count?" I fee like he KNEW the bank manager still had 1 bullet left. He wanted the bank manager to kill the other guy with his last shot, eliminating 1 share from the loot and ultimately killing the bank manager.
