I have heard that Japan's VSAV tournaments ban Zabel/Raptor's unlblockable jlk setups, but maybe that was just a rumor. For those who want to know, Zabel's jlk was just programmed wrong. It has one specific frame that is unblockable, and you can set it up as a meaty that chains into a knockdown for an infinite loop. And then there was that hilarious time when R Mika's costume was banned for TV censorship reasons.

To be fair to Rips, the unblockable reset was a glitch and the player was told by the TO that they don’t allow glitch exploits when the player asked before the tournament. The player did it anyway.

I think there is a little more to it than that. The specific tweet I think you are talking about, the TO says "more details: The player using this reached out to me 4 weeks ago saying that he thinks that this might be a bug and if it's allowed in my tournament. 4 weeks ago i told him, that if its an infinite/unblockable it's not allowed. I didnt dq, they had to replay." It looks like they were paraphrasing so it's hard to say exactly what was communicated between player and TO. But it's confusing to me, because it's not an infinite (to my knowledge?), and if unblockables weren't allowed, why would that Jax assist be allowed in the first place? I think there's a good chance there was some lack of communication/miscommunication, not just the player directly being told don't do this, and doing it anyway.

I thought the glitch infinite involved Sindel with Sub-Zero Kameo, that made an attack out of her float unblockable that's not suppose to be. Jax's ground pound is a legit unblockable in all scenarios and can more or less be setup by multiple characters. I'd still understand banning a TOD that involves an unblockable reset, since almost all the other character/kameo pairs don't have access to anything like that. But in this case, this is a part of how the moves/characters are suppose to function.

IMO the reason bans are more common in Smash is because the community has to ban items and stages for the game to be competitively viable, so it's not as far of a jump to ban a charcter or strategy

Want to give a mention to one of my favorite banned techniques, ghosting in Jojo HFTF! In that game, Avdol has a super where he sets a fire trap down and can detonate it by releasing the button. For some reason, the set is almost instant and gives Avdol almost 2 seconds of fully actionable i-frames. That’s already kinda stupid, but the worst part is that he can set multiple supers at a time. When you combine this with the fact that the meter isn’t used until he detonated them (letting him have effectively infinite sets), AND that there isn’t any timer on the super, Avdol can just make himself invincible forever with nothing you can do about it! It’s been banned basically forever, and I don’t think that’s changing anytime soon.

Smash Melee has the name entry glitch. There are a few ways to do it, but it basically involves entering a name on the character select screen and exiting at the same time. The game doesn't know what to do and goes to the stage select screen by default. Depending on other factors, this glitch allows players to start a versus mode game by themselves with no opponent, play as an an entirely blacked out version of a character, have a game last 0 seconds, play as master hand, and potentially more. It's typically banned because most of its applications can be considered cheating and the game becomes unstable and prone to crashes.
@GlowingOrangeOoze
@GlowingOrangeOoze 6 ай бұрын
rather than stage select being the default, the reason it happens is actually pretty cool and is basically a menu version of a wrong warp. You're going forward and back a menu on the same frame, so the menu screen IDs get added together and the sum just so happens to be the ID of stage select.

Surprised you didnt mention the Ice Climbers freeze glitch. If you hit a grabbed player that's getting up or forward thrown by the npc climber, then hit that player with a side b from the player ice climber while the npc one is in hitlag, the opponent will be frozen in place. the evil part is escaping it. the only way for them to be unfrozen is for the ice climbers to grab them again. So its not just useful to timer stall if you're up a stock, but it's just a free kill off of a grab every time. This of course has been banned ever since it was discovered, because it's somehow even more broken than wobbling.

From the NRS/MK side, I can think of a lot of things over the years. MK Trilogy: Noob Saibot is banned. He was just THAT good. MKX: Scorpion's Infared costume is banned. Day 1 Spectral Ermac and Mournful Kitana were banned (for a meter gain glitch and easy infinite respectively, fixed quickly). A few stages are also banned for visual clutter (ex: occasional lightning strikes or the stages that are all red). MK9: there was this freeze glitch with I believe Smoke that was banned. Maybe other characters too? It was done on accident in tournament once but the 2 players (I believe it was REO vs xSmokex) got out of it quickly and just continued playing. Kratos was also banned for being a console exclusive character (exclusive to PS3 and most tourneys ran on X360 anyways). A few stages were also banned for either things moving in front of the camera or even causing performance issues. MK Armageddon: air infinites were often banned. You were allowed to do them, but only for a few reps. Super Boss characters were also banned (they were mechnically WAY too different. Couldn't be thrown, some launchers outright didn't work on them, etc.). Kreate-A-Fighters were also banned. MK11: this is shown automatically in-game, but certain custom moves are banned from Ranked and therefore tournaments as well. One of the ones I automatically think of is one of Terminator's where he activates a mode that gives him infinite armor (not just attacks but even just moving around too). Injustice 1: This never officially went through, but there was talk of banning Scorpion when he first came out. Instead he got nerfed quickly instead. He went from arguably top 1 in the game to arguably worst character in the game. Injustice 2: Custom moves are banned.

To clarify on Noob he wasn't just good he broke the game. Thanks to his shadow cloud projectile which disabled his ALL of his opponent's hitboxes as well as their ability to block. MK9 also banned Klassic skins at one point because somehow they were all pre-patch, probably related to the same mechnic that let human Sektor and Cyrax have different frame data and hit boxes. MK2 Smoke was especially notorious for this because he had pre-patch Smoke Bombs. MK3 Mileena didn't need to be banned because she had taller hitboxes instead of the usual woman smaller hitboxes so she had the same combo susceptibility as the men and no one wanted that disadvantage.

Great video, just a couple nitpicks: - Labcoat 21 WAS banned when she was released, most notably, on CEO. At the time, aside from everything that made her be top 1, she could combo reliably into her infamous command grab super that nerfed you and buffed her, which was pretty much unpunishable and had little scaling so you could DHC without issues. When she received nerfs that made her more fair but still top tier, she was unbanned and nowadays, there are so many good picks that she doesn't feel as overcentralizing. -Similar to LC21, S4 Bayonetta was even more broken on release, most notably she could start a true combo from 0% and kill you from anywhere, so Spain banned her preemptively. Then she got nerfs to almost every part of her kit, which made her combos more SDI-able (aka not true, but the Bayo player could adapt) and people thought that was enough to make her not busted (spoiler: it wasn't) and ban proposals were less frequent because every Bayo main would tell you to "just SDI". -Meta Knight was initially banned on a bunch of US tournaments, but many top players who picked him, especially in Japan, refused to attend tournaments that banned MK as a sign of protest, which ended up softening the bans. -Steve had a rocky story. He started being seen as a gimmicky character that was only obnoxious to react to in Ultimate's dog shit online, but more manageable offline because he didn't start dominating right away. Then Acola came to the Gimrvitational and beat everyone playing Steve, which caused people to start calling a ban for the character (Kazuya as well, but that's another story). Then more people started picking Steve, the character was explored more and tech was found. Ledge setups, more optimal block usage, ways to turn his recovery from subpar to one of the best in the game, insane combos, etc... He pretty much played his own game and knowledge checked everyone else, with the risk reward being heavily on his favor either way. This was only exacerbated by the big amount of Steve players with not that remarkable prior results, upsetting top players. Then shit hit the fan when PMLG, a tech that allowed you to ignore hitstun with the right setup, was found. Due to how hard it was to detect and revise due to the lack of visual indication and how easy it is to confuse it with a jank multihit hitbox, bans were directed at the character instead and different scenes ended up banning the character on their respective tournaments, with no unified ban because it was still a divisive topic. Later on, Acola, who established himself as the current best player in the world, commented that he didn't think the tech was that good because the setup was simply not worth it so the actual threat of PMLG was put into question, which led to most of those scenes lifting their bans offline, but the ban was still present online because due to Ultimate's terrible netcode, it's harder to react, let alone get a good punish, which benefitted Steve way more than any other character. Currently, he's only notably banned at Coinbox because Hungrybox does not share team with the top 1 Steve and at IBGames, the biggest online tournaments at US and Europe respectively.

The Steve block glitch and Melee Ice Climbers Wobbling are examples in Smash of tactics that were banned. There were also talks of banning chain grabbing in the Brawl era, but I don't think they ever wound up actually doing that. I would also argue that the ban on stalling would count, since Smash rounds last a lot longer than conventional 2D fighters.

Smash does have a few bans on stalling, but it’s usually reserved for infinite stalling techniques. Peach bomb off the side of FoD and Puff’s infinite Sing stalling are outlined to be hard banned to make sure they can’t just get a lead and stop interacting. And Melee ICs also have a freeze glitch even worse than wobbling that’s also banned. But “softer” stalls are usually fine. Planking and platform camping are still allowed in most Smash games, though they did impose a ledge grab rule in Brawl bc Meta Knight was just that annoying.

In Battle for the Grid, we had one of the main comeback mechanics that was called Zord. There were multiple zords that did different things but one of them was called SPD. One of the moves this thing could do, after activation in specific scenarios, was removed air blocking from your opponents specific character (not all of them, only one) if you got a character then on incoming you could set up the Air block set up and do an inescapable unblockable incoming. Your opponent had to mess up the timing or get it wrong for you to get out. This was never banned outright but as time went on, it clearly became this is the meta. Other options were too weak in comparison

Hey LK, great video! Sharing some knowledge from your friends across the aisle... In SSB Brawl, Meta Knight had a tech called "infinite dimensional cape" which allows him to turn invisible and invincible as long as the player mashes specific inputs. I'm sure there is footage of it, but this was almost always banned at brawl events (2008-2010 ish). Something interesting to note, is that more current brawl events don't list it anymore and im going to bet that it's mostly because they aren't aware of it's existence since it was very niche and difficult to pull off consistently. You could, however, win a whole match if you did do it for 8 mins straight and moved away as needed :). There's also the Sheik chain jacket glitch, but that was never banned. ❤Zhime

SFV had so many costumes that during the final season there were quite a few banned ones due to visibility issues.

Reminds me of the KO juggles in Marvel 2. Those are allowed but only until the opponent is carried to the corner, because it will position the incoming character there. The juggle can potentially go on forever though, and since the KOd character has to hit the ground for the next teammate to appear, you can effectively stall out the timer and win right after just one char is down, hence the ban of the full strat.

Watching the ad read because you asked so nicely. I feel that wobbling in melee is a huge example that has been banned off and on throughout the game's history. Some people feel it falls under the "well just don't get grabbed", others feel it's just too much. It's especially interesting because I feel it's comparable to infinites in 3v3 tag games, where you don't outright die because you only lose one character. In melee, it's just one stock of 4, and you don't lose an assist. Plus they need Nana to be in position when you get grabbed so not EVERY grab is a death. I'm not explicitly pro or anti-wobbling myself, I just find the history of it really fascinating. The culture difference between platform fighters and regular fighters is really interesting in that regard.

It is very common to have bans on bugs/"glitches" of arcade games that not necessarily get updated. Specially if they have bugs that freeze the game (hokuto no ken infinite DP) or make one char fly out of the screen and become unreachable till the end the match (hime on mbaacc arcade before the revisions, athena on kof 98). On the opposite end, on very new, very e-sport centric games, a lot of things also tends to get banned. SF5 might be the most well know, as on CPT a lot of colors, skins and stages were banned. Some where because the players complained (ex: visibility issues on pyron skin or beach stage), some are because capcom felt it would mess with age ratings/sponsors on streams (ex: revealing costumes for female chars). On this same thing about streams, sometimes streamers have to ban some stages/musics due to copyright stuff. DFC was a infamous one, as sony music japan just use a bot to copyright strike anything it smells. Infinite combos is the one that gets a bit more polemic. Some people want to just let infinite combos rock, others says infinites would degenerate a game/"solve it" with the infinite as the final goal. In the end, it will depends on the community, every group sees it differently. But it might be something hard to enforce, as someone have to eyeball all matches.

I remember the Rolento freeze in SFxT and there being a big debate on if the tactic or the character should be banned because it was so easy to do on accident (if a projectile hit Rolento's dagger it would freeze the game). I think it got patched before any conclusions were drawn on that.

Key note about Akuma in ST. It’s not just that air fireball is something characters in that game can’t deal with. He basically falls as soon as he throws the air fireball, making it way safer than in any other SF. In addition to that, he can use a frame data glitch to do an infinite in the corner, he’s immune to being dizzied, his DP is active frame 1, he does quite high damage in general, and his super is something else. So his super is a command grab like in every SF, but here it has invincible startup, can somehow grab someone in hitstun or blockstun (you can use air fireball to guarantee that it hits) and it’s one of the most damaging supers in the game. Even the stuff he has that isn’t outright broken is like Ryu but just better. He’s one of the most clear cut ban cases ever

When I got into fighting games I played a lot of Soul Calibur 3 and there's this glitch called variable cancel that often (but not always) got banned in some way or form as it was very OP. I've also played a lot of smash melee and back then there was a constant discussion of whether ice climbers infinite throw should be banned or not. Generalized these two instances could be described as glitches and unintended interactions. Another thing that i've seen banned in recent years that is similar to banned colors is banning costumes, one example of this is blanka chan in SF5.

Gundam Battle Assault 2 is quite fascinating when I comes to it's recent developments in high level gameplay and it's quality of life cheats which made the experience of the game much better, like making the game run in 60fps when it was originally run in 30fps (Which actually changed some tier placements) and the most cool thing to be ever allowed is the ''Game Shark Characters'', due to the emulator Duckstation having easy access to those cheats without needing a physical Game Shark (While also having a rollback mod). When it comes what's banned in this game, there were 3 characters that had been banned in competitive play for a very long time: Gundam Epyon, Dark Gundam and Psycho Gundam MK-III. These 3 are the boss characters out of the 6 boss characters, and the reasoning behind their banning is self explanatory. They have very unfair traits and lack any sort of counter play, only like 5 or less characters can play the game against them. This game is a VERY high powered game where it has so much broken stuff, the top tiers and even mid tiers have moves that would be criminal to have these days, so it goes to show how powerful those three are. It's a really cool fighting game and I hope that Fightcade will soon make it possible to have PS1 games with Rollback so people can check out this hidden gem.

I think another banned situation could be classified as Non-Interactive Position. Most commonly, this would be going out of bounds/out of world, but sometimes, you can be in the legal area just in a position that makes interaction not viable/impossible. An example would be a variety of MvC2 glitches in which you fly off the screen.

I play Touhou Hisoten few years ago, this game is probably one of the game that difficult to get an infinity combo due to the reset system. There is one character that can actually do infinity combo (because the move if repeatable), but the reset system it designed way more clever. The system will count the hit limit, each hit will have different value and if it already reaching 100 or over, the opponent who receiving the hits will fall down and the hit box will be disabled until they are awaken and in ready stance. The system will only active for aerial combo or juggled combo. So if the attacker on air, it will activated, and if the opponent got juggled, it will also activated. For this reason, there are no character ban, no move ban, except for one. Stage ban. There is one stage with snow as the background. One of the character's projectiles moves also white and so it is very difficult to tell where is the projectiles position due to the snow background.

In Vampire Savior (Darkstalkers 3), there's a technique where Lord Raptor (Zabel) can loop unblockable resets with his j.LK. Apparently, not all tournaments ban it due to it actually requiring some skill and dexterity, but some do iIrc. Also, some games ban stages for all kinds of reasons. Visibility, uneven length, performance, balance, you name it.

I recall in KoF 98 tournaments they limited the number of loops in infinites. For example, ex characters had a hop instead of a run, characters with air command normals tend to have infinites doing hop + air command normals, they would let you do an arbitrary number of them in a combo. Or like Kim's "dive kick" when he caught you in the air, you could loop a few reps

This is a regional thing. I think China restricts infinite loops, but most other regions do not. That's also why 97 is like the big game in China, the infinites are banned while most other regions don't do that for KoF.

SFV had banned costumes in tournaments like a Blanka chan or some of the Megaman crossover costumes. In terms of banning tactics, in modern patchable games it *feels* like evryone just lets stuff rock until its done in a tourney and then it gets patched. SFV Dan had an infinite that was known and wasn't banned. There is tourney footage of the Dan infinite which later got patched out. The announcers were hype for it, " Is he going for the Dan infinite?!" Chars, costumes, those they get banned, but otherwise fgc kinda reverts to EAs old slogan, "if its in the game, its in the game."

What made the Danfinite fair was that the range was incredibly specific: by the time people found truly reliable setups for it Capcom had already patched it out. (In the most fun, dan-like way possible too. Patching out the danfinite was technically a buff and you also still got to do a few reps until the game says "that's enough".)

Blanka in SFV had a freeze glitch where he could kara cancel his super into his surprise hop, which would cancel the startup animation but keep the screen freeze and just let him move around. because the opponent couldn’t move, he would just walk up and command grab them or anti air if they were already jumping. then after the super screen freeze ended, because he never actually did the super, he still had full meter and would just do it again

Honestly, you should do a video on banned techniques in platform fighters. There are so many ways to fuck with the various smash bros games. I always look back at the infinites the series has like the infamous Wobble infinite from Melee where you could grab someone once and infinitely hit them in the grab, then finish the throw for an instant kill. Hell, Steve has actually been banned at several smaller tournaments because every month, someone finds a new tech that breaks the fundamentals of the game specifically for him. Even pros are demanding he gets banned

As an arena fighter, stuff like this happens non stop. From the tournaments I play, we ban a lot lol. We really just wanna throw hands. Each team gets a ban per player or captain. If you have a bigger roster in your game, you usually go with a “ban per player”. And each team can ban an assist type So if each team has 3 players. They can choose 3 characters and 1 assist to ban. You really wanna choose characters you don’t do well against (obviously). For example; “We ban Danzo, PTS Shino & Pain. We also ban the “Dash Cut” assist”. Then the other team would get their choice and it would commence to a First to 10.
