Bar Keepers Friend for cleaning brilliant cymbals

This is a 11 minute video with tips on using 'Bar Keepers Friend' Metal Cleaner to clean modern B20 bronze (bell bronze type) cymbals. This will work on all types of B20 style cymbals such as Paiste 602, Wuhan, Zildjian A Customs etc.
This particular demostration was on a 'well used' 18" brilliant Sabian AAX X-plosion crash cymbal on 3/2/2017.

Took a chance and tried this stuff on my Zildjian traditional finish cymbals. Never seen dirty cymbals come up so clean so quickly.

I’ve been playing and cleaning cymbals for about 40 years, all high end Zildjian, this stuff works killer, low abrasive, works great !

My God it's Brilliant! I didn't know if we'd have BKF in UK, went to Asda (our Walmart) and they had it. Cleans my Zildjians I always gig with and even my Pearl hats I've had since I was a kid. This is the best tip I've come across. Thanks!

Bought my first set of cymbals from a local music shop. The ride and 1 of 2 crashes are brand new. The hats and the other crash are used. The hats someone in its previous life had taken good care of cleaning to the point where they no longer have logos (though I know they are a set of 14in AAX accelerator hats). the other used crash is the odd man out and it looks like it hasn't been cleaned in awhile if not ever (probably no older than a 5 year old cymbal). Its an expensive Meinl Byzance and I've been deathly afraid of cleaning it to bring it to that lovely shine like my other cymbals. After watching so many vids on this stuff (BKF) I'm gonna jump off the deep end and clean my first cymbal!!! Thanks for the vid man :) Very excited for the results.

Thanks so much for this tip. I just bought some Paiste 505 Hi Hats and they were beyond nasty. They look like they've been in a bar with a fryer. Smoke and grease. I should have taken a picture. I went out and bought a couple of cymbal cleaners and they wouldn't even touch them. Just now got done with the BKF and what a difference. It took some serious scrubbing but came out beautiful.

Lava soap works wonders, too. It has pumice in it which is a natural polishing compound. I clean my cymbals with that first for really heavily corroded cymbals to get the heavy junk off, then the powder using a medium bristle scrub rush. My cymbals are like mirrors.

I use Amway metal cleaner and polish on my Sabian AA with brilliant finish ! Cleans them great !

I used bar keepers friend on my metal snare shell and it left a good clean shine taking off plake, rust and grim, i like it but never tried a cymbal i like to leave my cymbals the way they look after excessive playing time, makes them sound natural. If i ever do decide to clean them, ill definitley use your method. Thanks for sharing and being honest, it definitley goes a long way. Also, could you maybe do a how they sound before and after using BKF? That would help alot of folks out before deciding to try this method.

The stuff in toothpaste was called jeweler's rouge. Iv'e seen people use it to remove the scratches on their wristwatch crystals. It does an amazing job, don't know which is best, Crest or Colgate, LOL! Might work on cymbals?

Just used this last night on all my Zildjan A customs. Super easy and tremendous results. Be careful over the markings even with no pressure, they started to peel up.

Hi Drew, I saw your response to this cymbal cleaning video, I have Zildjan A Custom cymbals as well and I'm thinking of trying Bar Keepers Friend but I'm really afraid of ruining the logo's ? and advice on this, how did yours come out ? Thank you

@@joeorciani9691 sore for the delay. I just saw your question. I recommend when the cymbal is wet w BKF solution to just let the mixture flow over the decals. The slightest pressure can start to peal them up

I just used bar keepers on a vintage 20 inch Zildjian crash ride and the results were off-the-charts amazing!!! Wayyyy better than Groove Juice Crap!

I used a lite abrasive pad (comes in milti colored pak) which worked much faster than the plain rag.It doesn't scratch the surface but affords a faster cleaning job.YES Bar keeper works really well and the cost very low!

I live in Florida, not only are we surrounded by water on 3 sides, but it rains 80% of the summer months, we get flooded by hurricanes, and our state basically 'floats' on a giant sponge-like auquifer. So no, we don't usually worry about water. lol Maybe that's why everyone wants to move here!

Did you apply a small coating of wax afterwards ? Last time I used this on my A customs in about a week they literally all turned orangish in color. I want to say it's oxidation because it comes right off after I clean again

One caution I always give when using BKF is to make sure you rinse the cymbal thoroughly. If you leave the oxalic acid residue, it will discolor the surface slightly.

Most all cleaners do if you scrubb hard enough. Best to clean around them. That being said, this cleaner effects logos less than other acidic cymbal cleaners.

been using Bar Keepers for decades. Doesn't turn black (removing metal) and does a brilliant job. WILL remove the logo, but logo annoying anyway.

Everybody thinking of using this should be aware that it changes the color of the cymbals. They do shine after cleaning, but it's a different, lighter kind of tone, and it can be quite uneven.

I used this on some Sabian B8's and they looked great for 2 days then they turned orange color . I would never use this on a good cymbal.

@A D If it was an extremely dirty cymbal you might find you haven't rinsed the cymbal off well enough and left some tarnish behind.

That’s the issue, you aren’t supposed to clean B8 Alloy Cymbals like Sabina B8, Zildjian ZBT, Paiute 2002, etc. apparently it destroys the coating or something. I learned the hard way. On my B20 Vintage Zildjians, I cleaned it once three years ago and still shiny although I redo every few months on some cymbals to get rid of fingerprints and stick marks.

B8 alloy is different than B20 alloy in that it has more iron content in the metal. As a result, cymbal companies 'finish' those cymbals with a lacquer coating to keep them from quickly oxidizing. If that layer is removed, you will see discoloration/oxidation. Since Bar Keepers Friend has a very mild abrasive, do not use this method on Sabian B8, Zildjian ZBT, or similar B8 bronze based cymbals.

It may be grime free but you have completely scratched the surface of the cymbals. It's like cleaning the paintwork of your car with the same product, you just wouldn't do it. Now you need to use a fine grade of polishing compound to buff out all those microscopic scratches to restore the original finish on the cymbal. Never use abrasives to clean quality cymbals.

You must be new to this game. Meanwhile touring musicians, session drummers and home players have been using this for years with ZERO issues. The fact you searched and replied to a cleaning cymbals video means you were looking how to do it yourself because you didn't know how. Good grief, go back to your car. These are cymbals, not paint.

@@kommi1974 Cymbals are finely tuned musical instruments. Skilled artisans spend a lot of time and use their skills to produce something that sounds great. By using abrasives to remove grime and dirt when soap and water should do, you are removing metal. If you also use the abrasive in a random manner it also erodes the fine lathed lines that produce the frequencies of the cymbal sound. I'd suggest most touring and pro drummers are already using brand new blemish free cymbals, that really only require a wipe down after each use. Far from being new to this game, I was cleaning cymbals in the 1960s, and have been ever since, and one thing I'd never suggest is Bar Keeper's Friend. It's no different to Cim or Vim which is another abrasive cleaner sold around the globe. As a drummer, I probably take more care of my cymbals than I do over my car paintwork.The car will last me 10 years at best, the cymbals, a lifetime. If it's showing metal on your cleaning cloth, it's far too harsh.
