I would also like to point out Will Ferrell is the evil capitalist in two out of three of these movies

One time, I was having a conversation with one of my tenth grade students and he said "you're like a big book and movie guy, aren't you?" And it felt like a moment in a comic book movie or prequel when a character says the hero's comic name. (My students don't know about my KZfaq channel; they'd bully me)

Very good analysis. I love it when fiction stories meld it's themes with real world political and philosophical ideologies. Even those films that can be argued to be pushing an objectivist message, like the Incredibles or Tommorrowland. It's interesting to talk about.

I agree- and I'm interested you mentioned objectivism. I've thought about making a video covering Ayn Rand from a number of angles but haven't decided what would be right. Any suggestions? I've considered exploring how Objectivist/Marxist ideologies overlap in some ways, comparing Ayn Rand to Margaret Atwood, performing an objectivist reading of Batman v Superman, or exploring why Rand's characters are generally so unlikeable and her novels so inaccessible.

@thebookmovieguy I like your idea about exploring the weirdly unlikable nature of Ayn Rand's characters. My question, in turn to expand upon that, is why are movies that are accused of being objectivist in nature or commonly interpreted that way (like Ratatouille or Incredibles), have likeable/relatable characters instead? Do their themes have a vital distinction with Ayn Rand's ideology that people miss? Or is Ayn Rand just projecting her own assholery seperate of her philosophy? Idk 🤷‍♂️ 🤷‍♀️

@@AlexSciChannel This is a great question. My shortest answer would probably be because if those movies are looked at through an objectivist lens, the only accurate objectivist analysis is still, like objectivism-Lite. My personal take is that objectivism resonates with a lot of people because a pretty shallow understanding of it, especially in terms of philosophy and not politics or economics, is easy to get on board with. I think that to some degree, everyone agrees that the pursuit of individual happiness and being recognized for your talents or skills is important, and I think that "The Incredibles" especially manages to tap into objectivism effectively because it does so almost on accident by exalting people who are just heroic by nature. It works in "The Incredibles" and such, though, because the characters have other things going on and the themes presented by the story are still pretty human and accessible. There's a great deal of altruism still present in Bob and Helen despite Bob's ego and yearning for the limelight, and the story works precisely because Bob learns to grow past that ego and understand heroism for what it actually is- altruism, or at least an adoption of the Spider-Man maxim that "with great power comes great responsibility." Ayn Rand's characters of course take ego and confuse it for heroism and adhere more to "with great power comes great power." Not sure if that made sense or not, but I'm curious to see what you think!

@@thebookmovieguy I agree. I always found that Bob isn't inherently beholdent to the objectivist viewpoint because he is a selfless person. It's in his nature. Sure he's imperfect and sure he misses living in the glory days, but when the chips are down, he's still the kind of guy to help a crying old lady with her insurance, making him at risk of being reprimanded or even fired. And it was during the time heroes were illegal.

Killmonger effect? That’s literally just an antihero lol. But great video!

I see the similarity, but I think an anti hero has a moral code they follow which at times puts them at odds with the rules or status quo. Someone like Killmonger is still an outright villain who's moral code is indirect contrast to the heroes, not just outside of it. This is what keeps every villain with a three dimensional motivation from being an antihero. At least in my eyes. Thank you for the view and comment 😎

I think we can all agree that Emmet is too pure for this world, seriously this poor adorkable probably autistic construction worker just goes about his life so optimistically without a care in the world, I get it was part of the plot, but bro didn´t deserve to be thrust upon this huge responsibility of leading a rebellion to save the world only for everyone to disregard him for not being what they were expecting, it gets worse in the sequel when after he you know saved the entire world, they still dislike him for being, guess what, his happy and optimistic self, look it was fine in the first movie, and I get the apocalypse changed everyone´s mood, but Emmet SAVED THE WORLD, I don´t understand how they can not respect him for that, I am not ashamed to say that they got it coming to them once Emmet finally snapped after all he´s done for them, and has had enough of their BS and trapped everyone in the storage bin, Emmet may be the most nicest and happiest guy you could ever meet, but even someone as nice as him got his limits, and when he reaches that limit, he will absolutely lose it and plot revenge to go break into your house and kick your butt, which is obviously not like Emmet at all, but hey how do you expect a guy like him to act when people treated him like garbage for years, of course he´s going to crack from all the stress of trying to live to what everyone expects him to be, anyway sorry about the rant, have a good day folks :)
