I agree, oil changes are extremely satisfying, especially with full synthetic oil!

I just use cheap and cheerful Castrol Ultra-Clean and change it every 5000km - expensive synthetics are great if you don't intend to replace the oil as regularly though as their main advantage is they resist sludging for longer. Using a standard filter on turbos as he does here is the way to go, no need for the high efficiency ones, in fact because they increase back pressure to the pump they can actually result in lower overall pressure.
@JamieKugelmann

Hey Sean. I would recommend pre-filling the new oil filter, especially on the Z9 since it's so big. Stops the engine running with 0 oil pressure for 5 seconds or so. There is 0 oil pressure throughout the entire engine for however long it takes for the oil pump to fill the empty filter with oil. As long as you 3/4 fill it, there will be no mess. I've done it tens of times. Any time running without oil pressure is going to cause some sort of damage, albeit very small. Funnily enough on a mates AU, we purposely didn't prefill the filter, and could hear a very loud lifter tick for about 5 seconds while the filter was filled with oil.

Modern oils have lasting additives that cling to the parts of some time after the oil drains away, meaning that there is a protective layer between all rubbing surfaces inside the engine so you can do away with fulling the oil filter as part of the oil change. If you still are worried, ECU's generally will not allow any spark or fuel until there is sufficient oil pressure. Some mechanics do the filling of the filter as that is how they are taught to do it and they have a hoist that allow them to do it without making a mess and it's does not hurt to do it either, but with modern cars and oils you don't need to make the mess laying on you back in the driveway.

@Beer_Dad1975

Yup I've been using the same sump plug for 8 years, 25 or so oil changes - it's never leaked a drop - which is more than I can say for many other parts of the engine! :-D The bit about pre-filling oil filters, some engines (mostly older vehicles & vehicles where the oil pump is not near the bottom of the engine) can cavitate if you don't pre-fill the filter - I don't think there is much risk of this with the Barra, I've certainly never bothered doing it either - and in any case you can tell immediately if this has happened by just watching the oil pressure warning light - if it goes out within a couple of seconds you are all good.
@alexliberty100
@alexliberty100 3 жыл бұрын
I always pre fill my filters, only because my AU oil pump knocks loudly for a few seconds if I don't. But newer Barra engines should be fine. Once I took my Falcon to a mechanic for a service and I was charged $2 for a new sump plug washer. Many years later I became a mechanic and found out they're reusable and therefore was never replaced. So I returned to the mechanic and demanded my $2 refund! Sounds petty but I just don't like being ripped off haha
@jamestudoseartimon
@jamestudoseartimon 3 жыл бұрын
Just a word of advice Shaun aka Motoring Box If you are charging the oil pipes to aftermarket race spec, make sure they are not any smaller internal diameter than old ones. If the new feed pipe is smaller internally then obviously you won't get the same flow of oil into the turbo bearings with obvious consequences and also most people don't realise if the return pipe back to the oil sump from turbo is smaller internally then highly likely to blow oil seals in the turbo at each end of the shaft due to increased pressure because smaller pipes restrict flow back to the sump and the oil has to go somewhere so it blows out from the turbine housing or compressor housing. If you had already planned for this then your on the ball and disregard this comment. Appreciating watching this Barra Falcon Build !

Top Tip: purchase another drain plug😀 You can then carry on with the oil change and fish out the spare bolt later👍🏽 and very importantly an oil catch can to save those valves from coaking up and preventing your throttle body from the greasy film that it accumulates and go one step (preferably prior to tune) colder spark plug

@@grantreid3031 How does a K&N filter increase ring wear
@joshuaeacott4226
@joshuaeacott4226 3 жыл бұрын
@@FredmChoice Depends, an oiled K&N can actually block airflow slightly, by reducing the flow of air, you cause a slightly leaner AFR, which increases ring wear due to heat, other side of it is, if he means a K&N oil filter, its simple, they're shit, will reduce oil pressure, and cause several other issues too, rings would be the least of your concern if you're running any power. Ryco i'm skeptical about except for their new series, can't remember their name, but they're a dark grey-ish almost black colour, and they flow well. On Subarus its recommended to stay away from Ryco due to the tolerances a boxer engine needs, which is why they say genuine or nothing else. I noticed with a K&N oil filter on my BF, I found metal shavings on my magnetic sump plug, but never on the premium Ryco filter. Last time i try to save myself $5-$10.

Hey mate, good job on the servicing. Just to let you know, Z9 is the big filter, I can't remember the shorter filter name, but its smaller, and allows the engine to build oil pressure quicker, and helps preserve the timing chains, tensioners and guides on cold start, also increases oil pressure when up to temp, which protects the engine, very important on a BA series engine, to protect the bearings. 10W-40 is recommended for stock, I personally would recommend a Zinc based Penrite tenths racing 10W-40 oil, the added Zinc will help the longevity of your motor when you turn up the power. In regards to these engines, I know you have a catch can, as these can be prone to a bit of blow by, however these have been known to loose compression due to carbon sticking to the valves, and stopping them closing 100%, a Subaru brand Upper Engine clean, from your local Subaru dealership will clean your top end. I do it every service or every 2 services (I also do my services every 5k kms, but im anal about it.) Advice aside, you're doing a fantastic job on a step by step guide on maintaining a B series Falcon, and you should be proud of yourself! Keep up the fantastic work mate!

I have only just replaced mine at nearly 400000k and it wasn't leaking, I just wanted to, simple as that. unless it's rounded or leaking - l haven't seen the evidence to replace due to km.

I had a quick look in the comments and couldnt find it, but correct me if im in error, but Oem oil for the barra Na and turbo should be non synthetic mineral oil from the factory. Each to there own but my take is the longer you take to service past the 5000 km mark the oil, depending on quality, thickens and progressively loses its buffering properties and accelerated wear on engine components ensues. Your suggested 5k service interval is a great rule of thumb for any car which makes you wonder why some manufacturers recommend 15 k + services??? Oil and filter cheap - engine rebuild or failure, not so.....

I am pretty sure it's a problem for all barra turbo cars to be honest. But like some other problems there are multiple ways to look at it. You could go a full aftermarket oil line like I'm going to... or perhaps just replace the OEM oil sender+filter and it'd be good to go again for a certain amount of time. It's a similar problem with auto Falcons with the transmission cooler built into the radiator, causing the fluids to mix when the radiator rusts out. Most go for an external oil cooler, but they're almost the same price as a brand new radiator! Both methods fix the issue, so it's up to you 👍

Reusing the old sump plug is fine, however what can happen with frequent heat cycles is the metal can warp, and can actually pull the threads out of the sump if you're not careful with it, thats why its recommended every general service to replace the plug and washer, however thats typically 1 year or 10k kms. My jack is pretty low and I put a block of wood on it. Jacking the subframe is a bit tricky because the handle hits the undertray.

@@MotoringBoxTV I didn't think jacking on the subframe was recommended as it's alloy?

I've heard of the front rail bending but the rear part looks a lot stronger so I jack from there sometimes. Using a block of wood seems to help spread the load. Sometimes I'll jack from each side of the car using the chassis rails again with blocks of wood - haven't seen any damage being done. I tend to avoid showing detail of how I jack the car up as everyone has their own opinion and will often fight me to the death in the comments hahaha

They are 4 litre engines... Big engine calls for a big filter for it!

Any plans for a short shifter on the old girl?

Was considering it at one stage, probably won't for now as they're quite expensive.

@@MotoringBoxTV Yeah I was having a look around for one for my T5 box and the short shifter that cube does was about $250. Not sure how much they go for for a 6spd though.

Why? The pump will fill the filter in a few seconds, if you think bearing damage will occur that quickly you are wrong

@@rwd323 didn’t say anything about the bearings running dry (they will though), lots of modern engines have a “primed oil” system, so no oil in filter could lead to oil not even coming up the pick up tube, please google this there is thousands of answers there confirm what I’m saying, ask any tech or your local dealer…
