Classic SNF game between 2 playoff teams from that season. Been looking for highlights of this one for a long time before now, glad to see I wasn’t the only one who appreciates it

I was at this game. It was in Miami, on a Thursday night from what I recall, shown live on ESPN. A bunch of us Lions fans tailgated with Lions jersies and matching Lions miner hats. We had a big banner and they kept showing us on TV. I was 27. I still consider Marino and Barry to be my first 2 picks if I could build a team from all eras. Forget rings. Those 2 were undefensable.

Barry's approval rating is pretty close to 100%. But for his few detractors that throw out nonsense like "he couldn't block for his QB" this video shows otherwise. And this isn't out of the norm. He was a darn good and very willing blocker for all nine of the average to garbage QB's he played with for the Lions. Oh and at 7:31 Mitchell could have hit Sanders wide open and with basically the entire field to work with after the catch. He force fed an INT instead.
@skeeterdoo41475 жыл бұрын
Yes. Time and again, Sanders provided key blocks to protect his QB for key gains. The Lions had too many turnovers to overcome in this game. This was a game they definitely could have won.

Lions owners paid Sanders well but never expended much energy and money to build a better overall team . They "used" Sanders to draw in fans, endorsements, profits in general . It wasn't fair to Barry or to the Lions fans . If he had half a good an offensive line as Emmitt Smith had Sanders would have played longer and been the all time rushing leader . I don't blame Sanders for quitting after 8 or 9 seasons . He went out of the nfl in fairly good shape , all the more amazing with all the energy he expended and hits he took .
@Rob-dp3vr2 жыл бұрын
That is such a stupid assessment. They maxed out their salary cap every year. Are you familiar with what a salary cap is? Barry heald out and broke contract twice, for more money. I love Barry. My favorite player. The GOAT. But when you have a salary cap, and your star player demands more money, that leaves less to pay free agents to come in and improve the team. Acting like the Lions didn't want to win is retarded, and just a weak, wimpy overreaction based in no logic.

As the years went by his value to the Lions grew to insane levels. No one was more valued outside of the quarterback position, and even then it was rare. They took Barry out of goal line situations to avoid injury. Did I agree with this? He was rarely hurt, but his TD stats suffered. So, yes and no.
@davidwilliams48375 жыл бұрын
True. He was great at the goal-line.
@quietcorner2935 жыл бұрын
@@craigpaulson3503 Ya good point. Barry wasn't a power back and you always have to account for injuries, especially in this game. Barry was never the type that cared about his stats. If he came out and the Lions scored, we was fine with that. He just wanted his team to win. I have a ton of respect for Barry and I'm a Vikings fan. He made us, along with everyone else, look like fools.

I never understood why they didn’t do more throws to Barry for screen passes or little dump offs. He actually has good hands they just didn’t throw to him enough. He had too many QBs and they never really figured out a system. Most games it was Barry trying to save their asses again. His runs are all on him as he had to change directions. When they did give him a hole to run, almost every every other running would get let’s say 5 to 10 yards but he turned it into 20-80 yards. When they didn’t block he could turn the best 3 yard loss into a 1 yard gain and make it a highlight. He was underrated as a blocker and a receiver and the team didn’t use him to his full potential

This one was a tremendous match. If my memory serves me right, The previous one was in 1994, both were Sunday night games. Both 94 and 97 were Barrys' best in trdage, 1800 and 2000 yards respectively.

Two of the greatest to never when a super bowl...and Scott Mitchell was a horrible quarterback. The lions never committed to getting a good qb to help out Barry.
