Join Michelle, Kailey, and Maddi in the covered arena as they break down the different movements of a horse, called gaits. The team will walk us through the difference types of gaits, specifically the walk, trot, gallup and canter. There is so much to learn about the four speeds but also the variations within those speeds. The team is so excited to share their insight and we hope you will have better understanding of the various movements and speeds of a horse. Let's ride!

As someone who is just getting started with learning how to ride (at age 30!), this was a very helpful breakdown! Thank you for explaining not only the different gaits but ALSO the nuances between western and English riding!

What a crazy coincidence! I was just searching for "horse gaits" and what's the #1 result but The Ranch that we visited in 2014 (and I guess 2018?). If anyone else hasn't ridden before I highly recommend the Bar SZ! I've taken up running and became curious as to how far a horse could go in a day... like what's the equivalent for a horse of a human runner's daily 5 miler? Apparently it's at a walk or a trot so thanks for showing that. It's great to see everybody growing up. I'll share this with the kids and hopefully we can check out the new spot some day soon!

Fun video! It was neat to see slow motion and really watch how the legs move. I'm a little confused between Western and English, but I'm just a beginner, so that's ok. We noticed that in the English trot it looked like the horse's back hoof was hitting/clicking the front one, and we thought we could hear them connect too. Interesting! Keep up the great videos, it's such a great education for us!!

You have a great eye! Yes, during the trot, the horse’s hooves were hitting each other. Maybe soon we will do a video about the difference between western and English riding. Thanks for watching!

I was introduced to horses at a young age friends of the family owned horses and ponies. All through my childhood , teens , 20's four years ago I had to stop it due to medical issues. I will be getting back into volunteering again and horse riding ( English riding ) I feel free nothing can stop me from missing that.

Hi. I have a suggestion for two videos that you could do. When is why do horses sound the way they do when they snort and nae. And this video was really good, although I was hoping that you would’ve been able to describe verbally how each horse moves their hooves during a walk, a trot, a canter and a gallop. And I just loved what one of the kids did by showcasing the beat of a walk by pretending that she was a horse. I just wish she would’ve done that for all the gates and describing what hooves go where The reason I am asking these things is because I am blind. So I’m trying to get a good idea how each horse gates sounds like.

Thank you so much! I am a writer and this was very helpful for me, as one of my characters has an animal that he rides, and I wasn't sure if I was using the right term for the speeds I wanted to convey. Seeing your beautiful horses and lovely young ladies riding in motion and especially, in "real-time", I was able to get a much better impression on what speed he would use for various situations. Thank you for sharing, this was incredibly informative. ☺️

@@BarSZRanch Thank you. I am writing a romance novel about a sullen carpenter and a gentle widow who is a mother to a sweet 4 year old son. The man has closed his heart to the world because of an accident involving his older brothers when he was young. The kindly mother has been sacrificing a lot to provide for her son, but her resources have run out and she is forced to sell her home. As it turns out, the town she lives in is in need of a carpenter and the young man takes the job and purchases the woman's home, but ultimately offers her a proposition in which she can continue living in her beloved home, but in return, she must maintain the house (cooking, cleaning, that sort of thing). So, we have an aloof bachelor living with a downtrodden lady and her adorable 4 year old son. What will happen next?

I don't know a thing about riding but this was really interesting. As a city slicker who has watched cowboy shows all his life I KNEW those old cowboy shows were just WRONG as the hero can just jump on his horse and ride full blast a hundred miles or so to his next gunfight and just get off and park the horse that will stand there without swatting a fly till she walks out and rides full blast back. Not to mention the two dead cowboys nobody ever picks up off the floor as everybody just went back to drinking .. I guess I will watch another one to see if horses eat and drink...on theovie the cowboy just gave the horse a squeeze of water out of his bandana. I was thinking that's not a lot of water...........

Thanks for that... I learned stuff today. I'm Australian and have had limited experience with horses... I used to drive a horse and carriage for a friend (weddings etc) but not spent much time actually riding. I didn't know Americans had their own style of riding, gaits, etc. What you call "English" is all we see here, and I thought that was all there was. Thanks for showing me otherwise.

I loved your video and I would like to see more. Where are you located? I had a quarter horse named Doc n Money, a descendant of Doc Bar, who took second place in the hunter/jumper in Pomona California. I miss him so much. Is your Doc's Bar any way associated with the Doc Bar horse? I'd love to get together and see your training ranch and stables. We currently live in Santa Barbara and travel up to Monterey Bay. Also, in future videos, please explain the difference between shows for hunter/jumper, dressage, walkers, and what is expected in competitions.

Howdy, Charles! Thank you for stopping by. Yes, last year we moved off of the ranch where Doc Bar lived and where this video was shot. Doc Bar was the inspiration behind our name and one we continued at our new ranch a couple miles away. We are located in San Benito County and you can find our location on Google by searching the Bar SZ Ranch. We have houses available to rent on the ranch through our website and horse experience during guest stays. Thank you for the video ideas. We will make sure add to these to the list for our team to shoot. Happy trails!

So I have a horse and he has five gaits but I am not sure what the 5th gait it is. it's kind of between a walk and a canter but it's not a trot. Was just wondering if you know what gait it is because I would really like to know. I have tried looking it up but I can't seem to find much about it.

There are many other gaits that horses will do if they are “gaited” such as racking or tolting. Please check out this extremely helpful article: horseandrider.com/horseback-trail-riding/gaits-made-simple

What does a dishing gait look like ? X
@BarSZRanch
@BarSZRanch 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the questions, Love Never Fails! Equus Magazine describes dishing as "the term used to describe an inward swing of the hoof with each stride”. It is most commonly caused by poor confirmation of the horse, but can also be the result of improper shoeing or an injury. We hope this helps answer you question.
