In this video I unbox and review my new BaseBlocks trainer. In case you're not familiar with it, BaseBlocks is an all-in-one bodyweight home gym apparatus that's easy to fit anywhere and travel with too. The BaseBlocks company reached out to me and asked me to do a review of their product, so I figured, why not? I ended up REALLY liking the product and have been using it a lot for the last week or two since I shot the video.
I recorded the whole process: from opening the box, to assembling it, to reading the instructions and even getting in my first workout with it. The BaseBlocks was very humbling for me. It's basically a set of height-adjustable handstand canes that are attached to a solid base. The thing I wasn't expecting is that the uprights are slightly unstable, making everything you do a lot harder because you have to activate your stabilizers to control the movement and not shake. It's a little more like gymnastic rings than a dip station due to the instability.
I wasn't able to handstand on these things (as you'll see in the video), which is good, because it means having the BaseBlocks will motivate me to work harder at my handstand press so I can one day do some hand balancing on these. There are plenty of exercise you can do on the BaseBlocks ranging from push up variations to dips, muscle ups (from a sitting position on the floor), L-Sits, step-ups, pistol squats, tucked planches, handstands and a lot more.
I hope you enjoy the video and find it useful if you were considering getting yourself a BaseBlocks. And don't forget to use MINUS10 to get 10% off if you do end up getting a set!

Saul johnson good choice! I love my BaseBlocks trainer. I use it every chance I get and have basically retired my dip station. I've been working with Jason Gulati, the founder of BaseBlocks, and I had a little input on the design of their latest product called BaseBar. It's a free standing horizontal bar and should be released early next month. Stay tuned because I'll demo it here on MTG :)

This was actually quite helpful for me. I did like the idea of it because it can be put away easily. But it really appears to be to unstable.

Alexandre Vaysse I don’t think the instability is a feature but rather them trying to justify the instability. The way the bars fit, there is going to be some play and that will definitely get amplified the longer the posts are. I feel like this could be made very cheaply and more stable with a sheet of birch ply and some 1” black pipe fittings. It would also make for a super easy DIY project.

@asdf asdf Who? MinusTheGym or Baseblocks? I just think the product could have been designed better with less instability so more people would use it. It looks like a good idea just poor execution. As far as the unboxing review goes, I think its fine and I welcome these on this channel.

Do you think the leg training exercises on the Trainer are going to damage it after a while or seems durable enough to last? Keep for step ups and pistols etc but worried it might kill it after a while

Nguyễn Sơn Funny you mention that... I built an in-ground pull up bar in my back yard last spring and really enjoy using it. This summer I plan on adding some parallel bars and maybe a vertical pole for working on human flag. I'll document the whole thing and turn it into a video :)

"Over priced for what it does. Get a chin/dip tower. Cost less. Does more. I recommend the Stamina 1690. It's running at $135 on amazon rate now. The prices fluctuate. I got mine for under $90 w/ shipping included a few years back. Amazon and sears got in a bidding war going into Christmas. The price kept coming down. This unit allows one to do everything that can be done on a base bar and trainer for less then the cost of one (except for maybe handstands?). There were a couple other units that looked pretty good. One was the Swiusd Power Tower Pull-up/Dip Station. $99.99 shipping included. If you get one. I recommend one like the Stamina 1690 w/ no back pad or bar in the way so you can hold an L-sit position when on the pull-up and dip bars. Also, I prefer a design w/ pull-up bar on one side and dip handles on the other, but not 100% necessary."

do you think u can build strong biceps with these?
@MinusTheGym
@MinusTheGym 4 жыл бұрын
David Seo absolutely. Doing rows with an underhand grip will add biceps emphasis in a beginner fashion, but honestly, straight arm exercises hit biceps like crazy, which I didn't know before starting calisthenics.

Don't listen to the people claiming these are cheap and unsafe. I own one, and it has quickly cemented itself as an essential part of my home gym. RE: instability - the newest iteration has slightly decreased the range of instability so exercises are still challenging, but things like handstands should be safer and more achievable... not that I can do those yet.

I just got mine and was concerned because on mine, the two block pipes each contain only the top click, and no bottom clicks. Instead they just slide into the board metal pipe holes and you're supposed to turn them clockwise to tighten and anti-clockwise to release. I don't see this being an issue because gravity is always going to be pushing down into the board no matter what exercise I do. But just wondering if this is the case for your baseblocks or if mine are truly a manufacturing mistake? Already did some dips and leg raise holds on them with no issue.
@Trevmyles
@Trevmyles 3 жыл бұрын
Vicente de la Torre mine have clicks at the top and bottom. I wouldn’t think it an issue, but you might contact customer support to verify.

Josh D I’ve used it regularly for over a year now and it definitely holds up over time. It’s solid. I’m not sure what your goals are, but you should also check out their BaseBar product. I have that as well and absolutely love it. It’s primarily for pulling, though (rows, levers, pull ups)
