I wanted to finish this video before I began my first playthrough of Rehydrated. After taking months to finish this video, revising it over and over... I'm happy to finally see another edited video on my channel. I appreciate everyone who is still supporting me after all this time. I've been commentating over SpongeBob games since the early 2010's and it's crazy to see what this all has become.

Thank you Fred. Thank you for giving us your honest opinions about Rehydrated. The game is officially out now, and honestly it hasn't had the best launch. There are quite a few issues with the game. There is pop-up for models and textures on ALL versions, they missed a huge opportunity with Clancy Brown STILL not voicing Mr.Krabs, (like cmon, he's voiced the character for 20 plus years at this point, they really couldn't just have him dub over Joe Whytes voice???) and the framerate is not the best, especially on the Switch version. There does seem to be people out there blinded by nostalgia and people who look at this game and write it off as unpolished trash, but TBH, you can't really blame THQNORDIC or Purple Lamp Studios much. NICKELODEON must've wanted the game to be out to coincide with the third movie. (Its just a popular theory. I could be wrong..) I've seen THQNORDICs Twitter specifically, and they really do seem to care very much for this game and want the fans old and new to be satisfied. In fact, on their Twitter, they announced that they are asking fans of the game who are experiencing issues to report the issues on a website, and they will look to Purple Lamp Studios to fix them in future patch updates. Now THAT is what I call a publisher that acknowledges the consumer. You know damn well if Activision published this game, they would ignore everyone... I still love this game nonetheless, and I hope the issues are addressed and fixed in future patches, but I'm really grateful that this game really exists! People like you, RidersDX, and ZakPak really want this game to be the best it could be, and it looks like THQNORDIC wants that too. Sorry I had to write a damn novel in your comments section, but again I am glad you're back and giving your HONEST opinions about Rehydrated. I know you haven't played the game when this video was in development, but I am looking forward to what you have to say after playing through the game... Welcome back dude! Speaking of disappointment. Did anyone else find it disappointing how this remake uses the mono soundtrack from the original with a fake stereo effect? I mean I was expecting Purple Lamp to dig up the stereo, uncompressed audio masters of the original soundtrack and re-render it to a higher quality and in true stereo. But they didn't. And as an audiophile myself I feel like this is a massive oversight that should've been addressed.

I really wish they weren't rushed while making this. I was so excited to get it on the switch but that version is so buggy it isn't even funny.

I felt the original game was better. But I do really appreciate this, was a good call back of the classic. Your nitpick was no problem. I would agree. The game feels the same in most case. But the bosses does feel a bit more easy.

After completing the game more or less to satisfaction, I think I can say my piece on the matter. The first, and probably most disappointing aspect of the remaster, was the actual graphical remaster. In a nutshell, see Matthewmatosis' video on Oddworld: New N' Tasty. Rehydrated makes a lot of the same mistakes: Excessive bloom lighting, changing the original color palettes to reflect modern Spongebob practicalities, and ironically the loss of graphical fidelity due to an increase of high definition texture work. On the latter note, this can be readily seen on the Sea Needle and Sand Mountain. These locations have almost PS1 style distance fog, presumably to either hide texture pop-in, or to preserve frame rate. Even with the increase of blooming light sources, they don't make any good use of it. The original used bloom light and "God rays" to set up a particular color palette for the scene. In terms of Rehydrated, I think it works for Dutchman's Graveyard; the glow helps sell the foggy and supernatural aspect of the level. But looks bad for the Mermalair and Rock Bottom, which make no real use of it, and only serve to clutter the screen in visual noise. Same thing goes for Kelp Forest. I know the Forest's original plant bloom lighting looked really chunky, but the new iteration now makes them look like intense light bulbs. And while the original flat lighting was a bit too dark for some people, it really helped sell the dark forest theme from the original episodes. Now, I would say that it's too bright for something that's supposed to take place in the wilderness, at night. There's also strange inconsistencies with what I call the "persistent world". In the original, every background roughly modeled the map layout of other levels, in relation to the one you're currently on. See the city from Jellyfish Fields, or the tangles of kelp from the Forest? In the original, it basically said "Yeah, if you can see it, you can go there". Not only is it there, but it's portrayed in a way that maintains continuity between these low-poly stand-ins, and the actual levels. In short, it felt like an open world, just with loading screens. However, that feel is inconsistent in in Rehydrated. Goo Lagoon's entire beachfront is basically in Spongebob's backyard now. Despite this, the level puts you just past a parking lot, like the original. The beach, then, is somehow further up. But how can that be? There's no parking lot shown in the hub world, and the level suggests that the beachfront is actually a short drive away from the Pineapple. In that, there's now a disconnect between what I see, versus what I get. Kelp Forest is also wrong, too: You can see the tents and other parts that shouldn't be visible from the level transition, and don't quite exist in the form that's exactly shown in-level. These issues feel like they went for a more abstract version of the levels, rather than maintaining the careful magic of the original. There's also other small qualms with the graphics. The new green moon in the Hub for the Graveyard, while a descent detail, is fairly garish, along with the green-tipped iridescent trees. The Dream was completely botched: From the psychedelic scrolling of title card textures, to a generic, rainbow-colored nothingness. Same goes for the Dream's various sub-levels; all of them are some shade of terrible. Sand Mountain has been recolored to a deeper beige. Now, it looks much more like sand, than a stylized "snowy sand" from the original. They also, strangely enough, removed the original snowflake particles, and kept the omnipresent "underwater dust" particles in its place. As for the gameplay itself, there's not much to say. It's a pretty good rip of the original. However, I can attest that they added a whole bunch of checkpoints for the final boss, and made Robo-Plankton much less aggressive than the original. Bosses generally don't feel quite as tight either. If there's one thing I can truly condemn, it's the new "multiplayer" mode. And holy shit, that casts extreme doubt over Purple Lamp's competency. I would wager most of that garbage had little to do with THQ Nordic, and that PL's involvement in the whole game was basically outsourcing simple and unimportant busy work. Basically, the mode is a completely unfinished reimagining of the Robo-Squidward fight that got cut from the original game. Except, you just fight hordes of standard enemies. This post is already too long, but basically it feels like Plankton's Robotic Revenge levels of bad. Bad camera, bad character balancing, bad animations and effects. Feels like an intern did it in six months time, all by himself. A modder could probably do better.

I think this game’s pretty impressive for 9 months of development. It’s still a bit unpolished and bugged but apparently it’s because of Nickelodeon rushing them out for the third movie’s favor

I agree with just about everything you brought up, I wanted to convince myself that the game looks really good but I knew deep down... It looks okay at best, I'm super thankful for the remake at the end of the day, this was one of if not my most anticipated game of 2020 and after playing it and watching this video, I can more clearly notice my slight distaste, it's a decent experience at the end of the day but it sadly doesn't hold a candle to the original. This game will probably be amazing to the new generation that never played the original, and to those who played the original, it'll still be a good time, just not a time that we were wanting. I'm not gonna lie, I used to get upset when people criticize anything I enjoy, I once was upset when you criticized the GameCube version of the movie game, since younger I was passionate for Nintendo and kind of a fanboy but looking back at it, I now see what makes the GCN version of the movie game so terrible. Nearly everything you brought up about Rehydrated I agree with, the difficulty imo is kept relatively the same, some sections were easier and some were harder. This is definitely one of the best Rehydrated videos I've seen and I appreciate you Fred for giving your opinion in a super constructive way while also not sugarcoating anything.

Yo, I've just woke up this morning and saw a new upload from you. I watched the entire thing and you brought up plenty of good points about the graphical feel of this remake. Missing frames for character animations, lack of shadows, horrible lighting in certain levels, the reused dialogue and music really shows that while this remake could've been top notch, didn't quite reach the same level of graphical and sound quality of the original. I understand that you were working on this video before getting a chance to play it and yeah, Purple Lamp Studios could've at least tried harder in many areas to polish the game up and make it look more Spongebob-y. Sure, plenty of fans will be ecstatic to rediscover their favourite childhood game in HD and unfortunately, I'm late to the Rehydrated party due to life being busy and stuff. Hopefully I'll get a chance to try it out myself one day. Glad to see you return after a long time and I really enjoy your previous work in the past decade, especially when Activision got totally shat on with their pathetic attempt at making Spongebob games.

I believe the new game is pretty good. It is a bit glitchy and unpolished in areas (hopefully a patch will fix that), but I'm overall very happy with the game. I'm glad you're back btw. :)

Rehydrated overall is...well. Its Fine. It does what it set out to do perfectly fine. I do think a big reason why a lot of people defend the remake is because of how harsh game critics reviewed this game. (Like IGN giving it a 5/10 or gamespot giving it a 2/10). While I don't think the game is "GOTY material" or "one of the best games ever"; it isn't shit at all. Its just a simple fun game.

Apparently the reason why they couldn't revoice Mr Krabs is due to a contract or something that makes all the VA's have to revoice all the lines. So it was probably easier to just copy and paste the audio then completely make new ones.

They buffed robo sandy and kinda king jellyfish. prawn basically remained the same robo spongebob was nerfed just a little, flying dutchman was nerfed alot, and they neutered robo Patrick he is stupid easy now, and robo plankton was also neutered. As for robots fodder nerfed slightly, hammer was nerfed slightly, tar tar was both nerfed and buffed, g-love was nerfed slightly, chomp bot was buffed slightly, chuck and monsoon were neutered, bomb bot was buffed alot, sleepytime was buffed alot, arf was nerfed but more buffed, arf dawg was buffed, bzzt bots were severely nerfed, tublets were buffed a little bit and finally slick was buffed if you have any questions on how each were nerfed, buffed, or neutered just ask

The only thing that seems disappointing to me is that the Robot Squidward boss fight and the Patrick's Dream beta level are only available in the multiplayer mode, which I hear is disappointing. It's one thing to be faithful to the original, but I feel with a name like Rehydrated, in addition to updating the gameplay, why not include content that was cut from the original into the main game?

They did want to get Clancy Brown back for Rehydrated but Nickelodeon said no to it because if Clancy recorded new voices then everyone had to re-record their lines in Rehydrated from what I heard.

Actually I did disappointed at most scraped level are did re-scraped again, and WTF i have to Hold O on Sandy's Lasso instead said Pressing it. But overall the game is ok and FUN like the original, also man am I the only person that did respect Joe White replacing Clancy Brown as Mr.Krab, he'd did a good decent voice for Mr.Krab in my opinion. Also who knows that THQNordic might hire Heavy Iron Studio to make a Better New or a proper Sequel to Battle for Bikini Bottom.

I think this game looks beautiful and expressive. But I’m glad your not afraid to give your honest opinion even though I don’t agree with a lot of these criticisms. Sadly, Nickelodeon rushed THQ Nordic and purple lamp to have the game out at the same time as the movie, and that sucks because now they’ve delayed the movie until 2021 so what was the point of Nick rushing them? Regardless, THQ are asking for issues people are having so they can fix the game in future patches. Now that is what I call dedication.

Your past videos were the reason why I got the original game for GameCube in late 2016. I enjoyed it quite a lot, and when I heard that Rehydrated was being made, I was admittedly excited, though the Gamescom footage didn't impress me much. The PAX footage from early 2020 kinda brought back my excitement, and I decided to pre-order the Switch version for the sake of portability. That, and since I have the GC version. On release day, I was impressed that Purple Lamp managed to make the game run well on Switch, but the framerate problems sorta dragged my enjoyment down. Otherwise, I appreciated the game for what it set out to do: be as faithful to the original, but update it to modern standards. I'd later get the PC version, and I had much more fun on there since everything was actually consistent. I even recently installed the UE4 SDK so I could do some custom levels in the future, though I've been doing terrain imports from Sonic games (of which I know the file formats to fairly well). Also, BFBBRehydrated's internal name is "Pineapple", and the devs actually worked off of the original game's assets. In other words, you were pretty much the reason why I got interested in BFBB, and I truly respect that! Update 1/22/2021: I found out in the BFBB Rehydrated modding Discord that Streamline Studios handled the Switch port.

I actually love the Remake, but after watching this video, yea, I can see it now, but when I was playing it casually, I actually loved it more than the original, but then I changed my mind and loved both of them at the same amount, but tbh, the remake probably was rushed, like, most things in the game seem...unfinished like the first boss fight is still unfinished by the look of it, and the theater...it just pointless! I wished they add something else in the theater, like change character in the Horde Mode character, and lets you play as them in the campaign mode, that would be awesome! But at the end of the day, it mostly for the graphics, and animations (which doesn't look polished) and maybe add some new stuff, and change the gameplay a little, but remember, Reignited Trilogy didn't add anything thing new, and even remove the 2 player mode in the boxing ring in Bentley part of the game in snow level, but make the animations, and graphics 10 times better, which Rehydrated, didn't do, and it makes me sad, I wished the game got more time and polished it, but I still love it at the end of the day, it better than nothing. -Thank Fred, I love your hard work. I played through the game 2 times already. 1st time beat the game and 2nd time 100% it. I love the remake, but your not wrong when you said something felt off. It’s a great remake, but I still think the original is a little bit better.

purple lamp broke mechanics that were perfect in the original and the character animations were reminiscent of revenge of the flying dutchman's. it feels like they made this game only to appeal to the younger generation, hence all of the memes that is present in the remake. I noticed all of the wonkiness that was shown in the pre-alpha gameplay of rehydrated and thought they would improve on it (i.e. the character animations) but they kept it in the final game as if they looked at it and said "yeah, that's fine. the kids will love it!" and considering the fact that the game was beatable in just 1 minute shows that the game was tested quite poorly. rehydrated is disappointing. that's all.

If heavy iron did the remake i bet it would be 100000000× better

i completed the game 100% last week. and i do think that the game is really good, i don't know if i would classify the game as either better or worse than the original. As there are things that rehydrated did better than the original, while other things. The original did better in the original. i think that wall jumping was far better and the textures were more complete when returning to the hub world, as well as the teleporting thing on the pause menu But the things that i think rehydrated improved is the spongeball, the kelp forest stage, and the fact that sand mountain now indicates how many more snowmen you need to destroy There are certainly things that needed to be improved upon in rehydrated. But we could actually get updates for the game in the future, where the issues would be fixed. Since thq nordic and purple lamp do listen to feedback

Rehydrated was fun until you get 100%, you can't replay boss fights, even the final if you trying to get the secret ending on a second attempt. Also unlocking the movie theater is worthless in the remake. Glad to see you come back BTW.

I can tell from this video you likely be quite disappointed in this remake. A lot of the changes you predicted does happen and a lot of the things you hope get fixed won't. Let alone all the bad gliches in the game. It seems like you have a lot of fair points but I hope in your main review you understand the fact that this was a rushed game built from the ground up with much more detailed textures needed and at its core is still bfbb with different quirks to it. I think for an average player this version of the game will likely have more upsides than downsides compared to the original, but people who know these games inside and out will be disappointed with nearly every little change they did. Myself included. I had to just not think of it as a replacement definitive edition for the original but just an alternative, if I want a different art style, slight different feeling and the like. I just hope you don't bash it too hard by calling purple lamp lazy or didn't try because obviously they did. The reasons this game falters is from, A them not having the original code for the game, B Nickelodeon calling the shots, C Only having originally 10 months possibly less approximately 8-9 because of covid and nickelodeon being dicks not allowing them more time.

I definitely agree with your complaints about the art style. It just looks really tacky to me. The original was fantastic.

One thing to note is that the sound mixing (Something about the sound) for instance some of sandy's lines her voice is clearly too loud, and it really hurts your ears. It sounds harsh, I'm not sure how to explain it.

I Love The Video, I Do Like Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated, and I Both Pefer The Original Battle For Bikini Bottom and Rehydrated, the GBA and PC Versions should've also got remade, I don't care about buggy messes, and I know Im Late To This, But All I'm Wondering is that now that Battle For Bikini Bottom Rehydrated had already got released, when were we seeing the after release review.

I was really exited for the game and I still am cause I haven't beaten the game on switch lite mainly cause of animal crossing. Plus my dads ps2 broke so I can't play the original game anymore. So I still am really exited to play the game

I got Rehydrated, and I was very satisfied just to have BFBB in my possession again. Especially considering how the original has been very expensive in the second-hand market. $30 vs $50-$60 is not bad.

So far been having an alright fun time playing the game for the first time. Even if I disagree on some points but there are some tha I heavily agree like mermaid man. Though something I'm unsure is true but make since if it was true is that it was given a 10 month dev time to release with the film. If it was true then seems a little scummy

Shift already mentioned in a comment on your previous video that they should have taken the original Xbox version’s source code and implemented it into the new generation of consoles so then it would coincide better for the speed running community as if they were to fully remake the game from the ground up, they would have to recreate all the different assets that made the speedrunning work in the original. The voice acting and music does make the game feel empty compared to the original as it is obviously meant for a bigger upgrade. Clancy Brown would have been good for Mr Krabs to return however Ernest Borgnine died so he couldn’t return so Joe Whyte had to replace him in the show so if the lines were recrecorded, his voice might sound better with 17 years of practice. Joe Alaskey also passed away since the original games and Tim Conway has also passed away so it would have been slightly strange to reuse voice clips for one character as the sound would be from different levels. THQNORDIC are listening to the fans so you never know, they could redo the music and voice clips after all. The sound levels need adjusting. The sound effects are way too loud and the music is too quiet in comparison. When you die in goo lagoon, the sound the towers make is ear-piercingly loud. The loading times are too long (up to 10-15 seconds to respawn), textures pop in and out and the game just feels empty overall. I really hope in future patches this game could be the game that everyone was expecting. At least they can’t do the same as what Activision did with Guitar Hero Van Halen. That was a free throw away within Guitar Hero 5’s first month of release. They released an online purchase requirement version for Physical release a few months later. That could have been a perfect opportunity to fix what fans had wrong with it and make the game that everyone was expecting but no, it was the exact same game just with a price tag. And it wasn’t a good game either, critically!

The thing that felt most nostalgic from the original for me was the music, which returned in its full form. The animation style may be different, but the gameplay feels the exact same as well.
