This battle actually saved India and Allied airfields in India from Japanese attack and made supply of Nationalist Chinese Armies possible (airlift from India kept Chinese fighting) Without India Chinese war effort wouldn't last long. Entire Japanese Imperial Army was tied there. So battles of Imphal and Kohima were turning points as much as Stalingrad , Midway , El Alamein etc...

My husbands uncle George Henry Goodrick was killed in Kohima on 22 April 1944, he was part of the 1st Berks regt. who came in to relieve the few left after an horrendous and bitter battle at Kohima. According to war diaries he was in a recce party but was lost only 2 days after his arrival. He will never be forgotten.

The British weren't on the defensive in Northern Burma in early 1944: they were preparing an invasion of Burma and the Japanese operations were meant to forestall the coming offensive. Retreat, followed by ounter-attack was, tactically, the most rational way to fight the battle - as was shown by the outcome.

My Dad flew a DC3 load of mortar bombs into Imphal. He thought that more scary than his main job of flying out wounded from the Arakan fighting.

Fascinating. Never even knew this happened. Now that almost all the vets are dead there are even more battles coming to light that the history books forgot or neglected. Some of these battles are just as interesting as the famous ones.

I really appreciate your videos. The graphics help them to be more informative, usually, than most documentaries. If you're still making them, how about Gettysburg, or Trafalgar, or the Catalaunian Plains, or another one by Caesar or Belisarius? (I agree, though, that they're better without the screaming guitars.)

British, Commonwealth forces halted Japan advances in South East Asia and supported by other allied forces liberated all territories Japan had earlier conquered. The forgotten campaign. The majority of Japanese ground forces were in Asia fighting mostly in China. Yet American propaganda machine focus on island hopping campaign. Soviet force's completely overwhelmed Japanese forces it was the biggest defeat in all Japanese history.

Indian people at that time were sympathetic with Japan and Azad Hind Fauz (Free Indian Army). My mother was a 10 years old girl in Calcutta. She said when the Japanese planes were coming to Calcutta to bomb the port, railway system, she and her friends went to the rooftop of their apartment block to wave handkerchief to the Japanese, who have never bombed any civilian area.

Whilst its a pretty good overall view of this vital battle I'd say the narration is pretty dull and, as a museum professional, museums can be a heck of a lot more interesting than this. Boring museums are pretty much a thing of the past. I note however that this was made in 2009 so hopefully things have improved with future examples. Off to watch a couple more....

Fundamentally WRONG - in the first sentence!!!!!!! Arakan is the coastal province of Burma, THE SOUTH, and the battle referred to is the Battle of the 'Admin Box' which was commanded by Majr General Frank Messervry. (British) Troops from the Admin Box were airlifted directly from the battlefield in the south into the Imphal battle> This is absolute rubbish. . . . . . . .

Yes... I wondered if there might be another place in northern Burma called Arakan ( since my dad was in the actual Arakan, I knew the videoist couldn't be referring to that...could he? ). And "thrown out of Burma twice." ? Whats that about.... perhaps he means the 1st Chindit raid? But some of the details later in the vidoe are ok, if given a different slant to what I was taught. So not total rubbish.
