I have only played the MD version of this game (so I can't make a fair comparison) and, yep, musically it was a little disaster and sprites were smaller than Champion Edition's. However, I liked the colour pallete, brighter than the former version, and of course, the fact there were 4 more fighter. Back then, I preferred it to CE. Nowadays... I should give a shot to the other home versions, the original arcade and CE to give a valid opinion.

Yep, I got a bunch of games off of the Wii's virtual console, and knowing hardly anything about SF, I decided I'd try the one called The New Challengers, since it apparently was one of the more updated versions of SF2 and I think it actually is the farthest it goes in VC releases, though they might have also had the SNES version available too, but IDK. Anyway, I had some great memories with that game, and it was the first time I truly got into a non-SSB fighting game. It took me maybe 4 hours to beat on normal difficulty, but I beat it with Dee Jay with no points of health left whatsoever. :P Gotta love those then over-powered throws...

Emma Starr you won with Deejay? Good going. I could never use that character. What you need to do next is play Street Fighter Zero 2 (known as Alpha 2 in the west) the Sega Saturn is the ultimate version and not that expensive. Many people say Street Fighter Zero 3 is the best (again the Saturn version is the one to get) but I have a soft spot for Zero 2.

Yeah, Dee Jay seemed to definitely have the best throws in the game. At least, in that version. Haven't tested if it's that good in other versions, but Bison still definitely put up a lot of crazy battles. I have played Alpha 2 SNES version, but, IDK, it didn't really captivate me as much as 2 did. I also have Alpha 3 MAX on the PSP, but since I've read it won't save anything until you have less than 100 kb left in your memory card, I haven't wanted to play it too much, at least until I fill the card up a bit more.

@Tempora158
@Tempora158 10 жыл бұрын
Interesting trivia: besides the arcade game, only the FM Towns, PC and SNES port have QSound effects present. It's in the form of an echo, reverb, and phasing effect applied to the voices and effects in the game. Just listen to the announcer and hear how flat he sounds in the Saturn version compared to the arcade and even the SNES version. Surprising how the Saturn and Playstation version is missing the QSound effects when their audio hardware is quite capable of replicating them.
@RetroCore

The MS-DOS version is kinda like the Super Nintendo version but wayy better & it's uncensored! But, what caught my eye was the Japanese Super Famicom version was censored (sweat instead of blood) i'd understand the USA version release being censored but NOT the Japanese. What happened NoJ?!
@Tempora158
@Tempora158 10 жыл бұрын
The MS-DOS version is the Super Nintendo version with terribly composed MIDI music and running at a higher resolution than the SNES game. However, this causes the character sprites to be too tiny and the stages to be too big, since no adjustments were made to the SNES art assets to scale up to the higher resolution.
@MrDmoney156
@MrDmoney156 10 жыл бұрын
Tempora158 the midi music isn't that bad compared to the SNES one! I think the MS-DOS is just fine imo. Plus the Super Famicom/SNES sprites were a little tiny too dude! Cuz I kinda remember playing it on a emulator a couple of years ago with its resolution looking sorta bunched & small a bit just like how the DOS version on this video looked. So, pretty much they're on par.
@Tempora158
@Tempora158 10 жыл бұрын
MrDmoney156 The music is bad because the PC version's music is (badly) composed for playback on an Adlib's FM synthesizer, which sounds worse than the FM synthesizer in the Sega Genesis. And when the MIDI music is played back on a General MIDI device with high quality samples, it still sounds like a bad FM synth composition because of the terrible instrument choices. An example of FM synth composition done right is in the Sharp X68000 port. The Sharp X68K port also has a properly composed General MIDI soundtrack as well. The problem with the graphics in the PC port is the proportion of the characters to the stage. In the SNES version, the characters are tiny, and the stages were also tiny, so everything was in proportion. In the PC version, the characters are tiny just like the SNES version, but the stages are now huge. This happened because keeping the stages in proportion to the characters would have meant big black bars at the top and bottom of the screen (i.e. letterboxing), which is how the SNES version kept everything in the correct proportion. However, Rozner Labs created an even BIGGER problem in the PC version by running the port at a higher resolution than the SNES version. In order for Rozner Labs to get rid of the black bars at the top/bottom of the screen, they chose to make the stages bigger in the PC version. So they kept the proportion of the stages the same as the SNES version when they scaled it up, but they didn't do the same thing with the characters by making them bigger, so the playfield is now larger in the PC version than in the SNES version, making the characters dwarfed by the size of the stages.
@MrDmoney156
@MrDmoney156 10 жыл бұрын
Tempora158 hmm, I see that can be true but I think leaving those black borders would make it a tiny bit more epic with it looking wide screen and stuff imo! As for midi sounds engine being BAD?! Their was a ton of DOS games I know that used very good midi, you just hadn't heard the good ones and yes I do acknowledge there are a few bad created ones but the ones I might link to you are the most god-like soundings on the system than you'll ever believe! ;)
@Tempora158
@Tempora158 10 жыл бұрын
MrDmoney156 People hate black borders and will think there is something wrong with their video card or their monitor and will use the monitor controls to stretch the image to fit their screen and mess up the output for all their other DOS games. Rozner Labs avoided that situation by scaling up the backgrounds to fill in the black bars that would have been present if they left the SNES assets untouched. I've know there is good Adlib (MIDI) music on the PC, and it's written specifically for it like in the Apogee and 3D Realms games, which is why I stressed that the music in the PC port was *badly composed* which is why it sounds bad. The problem is that Super Street Fighter II's music was not composed for an FM synthesizer; it was sequenced for a digitized sample playback system with the appropriate samples present. Going from one medium to another required skillful adaptation, and it's obvious Rozner Labs took the easy way out and just transposed the SNES version's sample based MIDI music (or its equivalent format) to the Adlib FM synth with no regard to proper instrumentation. Capcom of Japan did a proper adaptation of the QSound music for an FM synthesizer with their Sharp X68000 port, Rozner Labs did not do that with their PC port.

We should demand Capcom to re port this game to Snes based on the FMTowns one, but correcting some flaws like some backgrounds, it's perfectly possible, the resolution is the same,can display the same amount of colors, and honestly, this game is rather easy for the Snes to reproduce, and remember that nowadays we don't have memory limitations. I don't understand why even in the 90s Capcom didn't make upgraded versions of SF2 World Warrior/Champion Edition/Turbo for Snes/Genesis since you could have arcade perfect versions using 32megs cartridges, obviously, in 256x224, like this FM Towns port, which in a CRT looks almost identical to the arcade original. Many games like Gundam E.D. for Snes (16megs slowrom) prove that, like Gizaha said many times (Snes hacker who made the Killer Instinct patch), CPS2 gameplay and looks are easy things for the Snes, and just by taking a look at the Snes development manuals you can confirm that. Arcade perfect re ports for Snes/Genesis, 256x224 for Snes and 320x224 for Genesis would be a great comeback for those consoles, at least for the Snes, graphically/gameplay wise, the game's already made, it's the FM Towns one.

I had both SSF2 and SSF2T for DOS. The former came out over a year later, and was a port of the SNES game (with smaller, redrawn graphics) while SSF2T was close to arcade perfect. +Retro Core based on the remark you made in your Samurai Shodown video, I'm guessing your review won't be quite as glowing as most people! The lack of background layers and the use of the older sprites probably has something to do with it. A decent but highly overrated port indeed!

Not sure if the emulation is a problem with the music on the Mega Drive version here, or if it was changed for the PAL version, but I bought it at launch in the UK and played it through decent speakers on a PAL launch era Mega Drive, and it sounded WAY better than this. Perhaps it's emulation or that the newer MD hardware just sounds much worse. Obviously the Arcade and FM Towns / 3DO are the kings for music, but this is much worse than it was back in the day from the PAL cart. I'll have to hunt down a 'High Definition Graphics - Stereo Sound' version Mega Drive and test this out at some point. Maybe my memory just deceives me after all these years, so I'll have to do some research!

While the mega drive port wasn't as good as it could have been it had meatier punch/kick sound effects than the snes and the music was better than the snes version. Granted the snes had better voices despite no round one 1/2 fight but at least the md made an attempt even if it was poor , besides the one thing the mega drive did have over the snes that people were happy to crowd around was the tournament mode boasting an 8 player tourney with your mates burnt through the hours quicker than you'd realise.

One of the most terrible mistakes of Capcom was with the SNES version. Why the voice of the narrator was not included saying "Round 1... Fight!"? When I was a kid, hearing that was elemental and exciting. However you can listen "You win, You lose, ussr, china, japan, thailand, ryu, ken, chunli, dhalsim, 9, 8, 7 bla bla bla... zero" except round 1, fight. Thats stupid!!

Ah, so Eurocom worked on the MS-DOS versions of Super Street Fighter II and its update SSFII X/Turbo? It bears repeating, but even they're better than U.S. Gold and their hired goons on the original Street Fighter II...
@Tempora158
@Tempora158 10 жыл бұрын
No, the information in this video is completely wrong. Eurocom ported the arcade version of Super Street Fighter II Turbo to MS-DOS and was published by Gametek in 1995. It was the most accurate port of a Street Fighter game that Western PCs have ever received at the time. Then, in 1996, Capcom decided they wanted to get into the PC game business, and they hired Rozner Labs to do two SNES-to-PC ports to bundle with their 6-button PC gamepad, and those games were the SNES version of Mega Man X and Super Street Fighter II. This is the version that's shown in the video, not the Eurocom port, and it's a complete regression to what Eurocom accomplished the year prior. Capcom/Rozner Labs published Super Street Fighter II in *1996* even though Gametek/Eurocom's newer (and superior) Super Street Fighter II Turbo came out in *1995*, a year earlier. Not only did Capcom/Rozner Labs' release a downgrade of a game that already came out last year, but it's based on the inferior SNES version instead of the arcade version, making their release doubly pointless.

***** Capcom's PC effort were shit. After the 16-bit era, when Capcom wanted more games on the PC, they only ported the Playstation version of everything. This includes the PC port of Street Fighter Alpha and Street Fighter Alpha 2, which are both ports of the Playstation version, the worst versions in existence (excluding the handhelds), instead of the arcade versions. Not only did Capcom port the inferior Playstation version to the PC, but they were bad PC ports, missing even more animation than the Playstation version, mainly in the backgrounds. This made no freaking sense as PCs in 1998 had at least 16MB of RAM and a Pentium and that very same PC can play an arcade perfect version of the games through CPS2 emulators (e.g. Final Burn), which Capcom couldn't accomplish in a port specifically written for the PC.

M4R14NO94 Capcom had not released any PC game DRM-free AFAIK, so maybe they used their old and crappy PC port of Street Fighter Alpha 2 as their DRM-free test release as it isn't one of their precious that needs protecting, such as one of their *GOOD* PC ports. Would be great if they released the Resident Evil trilogy on the service, but the first Resident Evil is a compatibility bastard as it has hard checks for a few specific 3D cards and was written for Windows 95 to the point that it has issues with Windows 98 and beyond IIRC.

To be honest, I prefer Street Fighter II: Turbo and Street Fighter II: Special Championship Edition over the SNES and Mega Drive ports of Super Street Fighter II. I know Super Street Fighter II has Cammy, Fei Long, T. Hawk and Dee Jay but the Mega Drive version sounds awful, the music in the SNES sounds like Mega Man X2 clone with too much reverb and the Turbo feature made gameplay more exciting. Actually, I should have expected poor usage of both 16-bit sound hardwares from Capcom. I just can't understand why the SNES port is only 32 megabits while Mega Drive port is 40 megabits. Was the license and manufacture cost for SNES cartridges actually more expensive? Didn't Nintendo care about Super Street Fighter II like they did with the previous two ports of Street Fighter II. Did Sega and Capcom have a secret deal about the cartridge sizes?

Ok, let me defend the Amiga version a little bit here. First, this was developed by some guys who had NEVER DONE ANYTHING ON AMIGA before. Is it badly programmed in terms of not using the hardware properly? Yeah, pretty much. (Still better than a direct Atari ST port I'd guess :D ) Second, I see you were using a 6 button controller scheme on Amiga. The game supports the CD32 controller for 6 buttons. With either 1 or 2 buttons controllers, the game is pretty much unplayable indeed (With 1 button you have to press SHIFT on keyboard to swap between punches and kicks, oh lord) With this being said... Super Street Fighter 2 on Amiga is probably the BEST game of its genre on the system. It looks like shit, it doesn't sound too well either, it's underusing the hardware, the loading times are atrocious (and it's not HD installable, what the hell) but with a 6 button controller scheme (CD32 controller or keyboard), it plays like a dream. The gameplay is far from being arcade perfect, but its surprisingly very close, much more than I could ever dream to see on Amiga. You are playing the ECS version here. There's also an AGA version that still looks like kinda shit, but it does looks better. Wanna check out an Amiga fighting game that looks incredible and it doesn't play too bad either? Check Fightin Spirit. When I show this games to friends on my Amiga, they are all like "Shit, this looks too much like a Neo Geo Game !!!"

This game will run on an OCS Amiga A1000 from 1985 with 512K chip 512K fast RAM. I don't believe any of the other systems (except the PC that at the time would not have been able to run it) were around in 85. And the AGA version is a minimal effort hack job just basically making it play faster, and adding the CD32 pad option (it looses the keyboard option) However on an A1200 and with the turbo turned to the max this game does play fast. The Amiga not having a 6+ button pad as a standard part (although it has always been able to handle one) hurt many conversions.

The Mega Drive version was better than the SNES one in terms of gameplay and animation, the colors and the sound on the other hand were miles better on the SNES, with the exception of the sounds for punches and kicks which on the SNES are that awful that I prefer the Mega Drive sounds as harsh as they are.
