Bauer .25 acp vs. "The Baby Browning"

This video is a side by side comparison of the Bauer pocket pistol and the Browning .25 acp. They are "mostly identical" but not "exactly identical". Additionally, if you look closely, you can see that the quality is not the same in the Bauer. Look at the way the sear sits in both pistols. FYI. Having shot both I prefer the Browning.

I still have my Grandmother's Baby Browning. She got it as a Wedding Gift when she married my Grandfather...(Whom I was Named after) Grandpa died in WWII in France when My Father was 2 years old... Dad is 75 now ... I received the Baby Browning when Grandma Passed.. To me, That Pistol is Priceless... .. Great Video.!!

I have a Bauer Automatic and it's a surprisingly reliable firearm. Most people will claim they're inaccurate and not reliable for stopping ability... Well, that's because most people misunderstand what the intended purpose of these weapons - they're not meant to be accurate at distances, they were designed, manufactured, and distributed as a "boot gun", backup gun, or "gutshot" gun. They're intended for close contact rapid firing in self defense.

Hello. Thanks for the comparison. I have a Bauer (haven't shot it yet) but not an original Baby Browning. I do have two clones, the PSP-25, made by Precision Small Parts. One blued and one in stainless. They are fine little guns! Precision Small Parts has become Precision Small Arms and still makes these little beauties although they are quite expensive IMO. Thanks again!

One comment: The round cylindrically shaped part which must be rotated to field strip the pistol. It is called a barrel. Pretty universally. Liked the video in all. Other than my pedantic attitude. I have lately become a collector of .25 ACP (or 6.35x16mmSR or 6.35 Browning or FN1906 for Europeans). I would not trust my life to that cartridge, either. But the history of the origins of the pistol and cartridge is fascinating.

Are they both identical in size that they will fit in the same holsters? (Hard holsters like kydex for example). Have seen some pictures and video that show them being the same size... but then also some that showed the Bauer being larger than the Browning... so not I'm not certain. At about 1:06 in this video the Bauer appears larger, but then later when you shot them with the slides off (seeing the internals) they appear to be the same size. Haven't been able to find dimensions of them to compare. On Wikipedia, they show that the Bauer is actually slightly smaller in length and height (thicker though, but may be because of the thicker grips... I'm not sure if the actual slide or frame is thicker though).

One of the differences between them is the spring for the magazine catch and the disconnect safety. The Browning is more of a coil spring and the Bauer is more a wire spring. They are kind of fiddely to put back together when someone has taken them too far apart. I bought one as a bag of parts, and after a bit of tinkering got it put back together. It actually works well, only problem I had was a worn out magazine. No hiccups after I replaced it.

Everytime I do I think of the bauer LOL. It was/is an excellent Pistol and a real piece of Michigan Industrial history. There was also a "copy" of the walther ppk/ppk/s made in .380 by Michigan arms but it,s quality control was disastrous compared to the bauer.

You have to dry fire it anyway. It doesn’t have a last round hold open. When you are out the firing pin is cocked. Unless you load a snapcap as a last round, you have to always remember your 6+1 or you have to dry fire it. They are designed to be dry fired. It’s in the manual

The only "downside" to trusting your life to the .25 auto is that nobody actually "trains" to use them as they should. Forget all the crap you see and hear spewed on internet forums about accuracy at 20 feet, and two-handed, aimed fire. These tiny guns were NEVER intended to be used that way. The PROPER way to use one is in close, either in contact, or within a few feet. The straight blow-back system is highly reliable and allows the gun to be pressed firmly against the bullet recipient which magnifies the damage done due to expanding gasses jetting into the wound! These little guns work best when you use your body and off-hand to push into your attacker, blocking and deflecting as you press the little gun against their body and yank the trigger a few times - or more. If you have a little more distance than contact, then "point shooting" is the order of the day. Eyes fixed on the place you want the shot to go, gun comes out, points and fires, and the shot goes where the eyes were looking! Save for any misalignment of the gun within the shooter's hand, however at 5 or 6 feet or less this is of VERY LITTLE importance! A failure to "stop" with these little guns is due to the EXACT SAME reason .380s and 9mms fail to stop - wild "shot throwing" without deliberate intent. Cops shoot that way and civilians shoot that way...they pull a gun and start "throwing shots" in the general direction which means misses and peripheral hits. When you read headlines about cops shooting someone 41 times before they went down you are NOT reading about cops who were placing their shots with intent, but cops just shooting wild - in the general direction! NOBODY can continue the fight with 41 9mm slugs punched through his HEAD, or center-mass! NOBODY! The dood in the Miami shootout was hit something like 14 times - even in his FOOT, yet only ONE round of 9mm nicked the aorta and was causing him to bleed out as he continued the fight. He was finally put down by a cylinder full of .38 Special slugs pumped into his face and chest and point blank range. All the OTHER hits were just "cops throwing shots" without serious intent. Every FBI agent there could have been carrying .25 auto pistols and put the perp down within the first few seconds of the fight had they fired with INTENT...and that is something completely related to how the human psyche deals with violence and the potential for killing another person. The best training one can do isn't standing at an indoor range punching 500 holes through paper, it's THINKING about SD scenarios and mentally "walking them through" complete with how to respond with a gun and making DELIBERATE shots. The person who uses a .25 auto with deliberatation and the mental willingness to kill will do exactly that. The person who "throws bullets" will go around claiming the gun was ineffective...we see it all the time with the modern internet. The goob with a weak grip who blames the gun for not cycling is one good example. Another is the shots an attacker in the arms and legs - and upon release from the hospital goes around blaming the gun and caliber for failing to put the maniac down.

Bought a Baur about 30 years ago and of course didn't know what I had. Ended up selling or trading it only to wish I still had it! The .25 Auto is maligned and disrespected - more so since the arrival of the internet where all the wanna-bees parrot every negative thing they hear in order to be like the "cool kids". But something I've NEVER had happen is NOBODY has ever taken up the challenge to stand in front of a .25 auto from 3 feet - aimed at their sternum or forehead, and yank the lanyard for themselves to PROVE the cartridge "won't do shit". I think THAT speaks volumes MORE than all the BS being spewed from their collective suck holes!

I hope you've learned something in the past year. "Nobody wants to be shot with [fill in as you please]" is a false argument. The idea is not whether it will cause a painful and unpleasant wound. It will. The idea is will it prevent an adversary to continue the illegal and deadly attack? Not reliably. Yes, a .25 ACP round will kill. But that isn't the important thing, either. The important thing is to end the adversary's attack as soon as possible.

It works, but there are far better things that also fit in your pocket, 380’s and even some small 9mm’s. From that distance, recoil isn’t relevant, it’s point shooting. Both 380 and 9mm ammunition is substantially cheaper for practice. The guns are also pretty darn economical. If you want to carry a 25, all the power to you, it’s a free country. But to suggest there aren’t substantially better things out there is foolish.

I have a Bauer. Love it...perfect little belly gun. Shoots first time, every time...rapid fire? ...no problem. I've put about 500 rounds through mine and never a problem. I mean it, 500 rounds! Spare parts are available... look for 'baby browning'...they work nicely. Look, the .25 may not be a 'man stopper', But if you have one in your hand...a Bauer .25 (or a 'Baby Browning) could save your life...even if just showing it to a nefarious jerk! Really now, 5 quick shots to the face...you get away...problem solved! If you can find a Bauer .25 I recommend you buy it! A "Baby Browning' may command a higher price, though. Travis Alexander was shot once through the right temple with a .25 auto by Jodi Arias. The bullet traversed across his head behind the face and came to rest behind the left cheek. Though Arias had already delivered the killing strike with her first manual knife stab, that final .25 auto blast would have been the "coup de gras" had the 29 knife stabs and slashes not gotten the job done!

My grandpa left me possibly the world's biggest 25 ACP gun, it's a German Luger style looking gun, has 9 round magazine, and a 4.5 inch barrel. Writing on it is a German name "Henreich" and it says 6.35x16 which is euro way to say 25 ACP. Unlike the 25s I'm seeing on KZfaq because the barrel length I seem to hit high 800s low 900s with factory ammo, I'm scared to try any hot home loads because guns age. But idk why but I think mine might be biggest 25 ACP I ever seen. My barrel is 4.5 which is huge compared to any other 25 ACP I've seen, my guns handle and base is bigger then normal too

Take that gun out and shoot the livin' shit out of it! Really, do you think you'll damage a steel gun by shooting a 'HOT' .25 cartridge? I love .25's. I shoot all the time and my .25's get used a lot at the range. Shoot that gun. You won't damage it. The only problem you will find is that your bank account is lower because it's a .25. The Browning is a superior firearm when compared to many firearms of it's time. It is not that much better than the Bauer. Not if you really look into it. The Bauer suffered quality of fit and finish toward the end of their run. This is just a problem of final inspection in different areas of the pistol. It was just 'fit and finish. The early production runs of these pistols were damn near perfect. On the later runs, touch here and there of a stone abrasive and all problems are solved. Let's not forget these firearms are made of stainless steel. I have 'fixed' a few problems with fail to feed and stove piping for a number of these guns...it's just a very minor application of stoning and a bit of polishing of the feed ramp to remedy the situation. The Bauer was a very well made firearm. The reason they're not made now is that they'd be VERY expensive!!! That just says it all! BUY ONE IF YOU S

You have to be very close to your attacker though, like 7 yards away at the most. Even then you have to fire at least 2 rounds since the .25 acp is not known as a one-shot or even a two-shot manstopper. The .25 acp is too anemic to be considered an adequate self-defense round, in my view. Personally, I'd go with something a little more potent, like the .380 acp. At least the attacker would know he'd been shot.
