I’m 70 now. This song takes me right back to the year it was released. Rented an apartment in a beautiful old house and filled it up with this and other songs from the era. Had a good friend named Tom who I loved dearly. I remember sitting on the wooden floor with him, listening to this song over and over, talking about everything in the world, and making plans for our future. Our plans never panned out but the memories stay strong and this song is the soundscape for them. Preserve your memories, they’re all that’s left you.

Your first word is the key one. In particular, we are talking about God the Holy Spirit, who is ACTIVE in offering signs through Scripture, nature, culture ... and (maybe soon enough) Rapture. Even in the 80s, He might be more active in British music than American - though the above is a wondrous exception. Already the corporate control was getting strong in the sad context of 1 John 5:19. Now music is so much in the hands of the darkness (as we can discern quite clearly), that is much harder for the Holy Spirit to find ways in. That is the truth. He is the Spirit of love and truth, but also meaning. So we mostly keep going back to older pieces of music. [Elbow's "One Day Like this" came out in 2008] ["If this is it" - Netwon Faulkner, 2009] [Frank Turner "the way I tend to be" - 2013, so even that is 11 years ago, and that's Indie music] kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iMWooK2UzJfNcok.html is in the special pandemic circumstances of 2020, though the song (with very religious origins) goes back to '97 - Katrina.

Went to a concert in the late 1980's in Manchester. Didn't know who the supporting act to Huey Lewis & the News was. A guy slowly walked onto the stage, sat at the piano and began to play....this!! The audience were in stunned disbelief, as the rest of the band 'The Range' joined him on stage...what a performance and one of the best concerts I've ever attended. What an unforgettable evening, thankyou Bruce & Huey.

But, genius that he is, it is never surpassed by "The way it is"... The love and truth in the song was from the Holy Spirit (as all love and truth is), but somehow passed Him on through the song. As ever was. Song even defies happy-sad classification as it so far transcends such basis stuff...

When I was out to lunch with a girl I really liked and scrolling through the car radio for music. I knew we had some different tastes but then i heard the intro to this and stopped. She said she loved this song and I said I did too. We sang it out loud together and held hands smiling. I bought her an autographed piece of sheet music of this song for Christmas and 13 years later it hangs in our bedroom. We still hold hands and sing it whenever we hear it. Its a very special song for us.

Hearing this song ALWAYS takes me back 1986...to being a 12 year old...riding with my Grandpa in his 1983 Toyota pickup. We'd hear this song on his truck's lousy 2-speaker radio and I'd ask him to HUSH, so I could hear the entire song! When he passed away in 2016, I went with others to pack up his house. Surreal. As I left his house for the very last time, I got in my car and immediately played this song as I drove away, crying and filled with memories of Grandpa and youthful days that won't ever be again..

1986, I was 16 attending high school in Edmonton, Alberta from HK. This was the song played almost every morning on the radio. I remember those days with those iconic John Huges movies like Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, etc., and especially Ferris Bueller’s Day Off which still cracks me up every time without failing. Hornsby’s distinctive piano intro just cuts through everything like no other. When the music came on through the radio, it could almost capture your attention no matter how many times you’ve already listened to this tune. The good old days!

The song says it, "Some things will NEVER change". Painful truth. Sadness!!!!! And for some of us from Africa, it has become a DOUBLE EDGED SWORD. So we run to the diaspora where conditions in a deceptive kind of way, cut the same. Now our children grow in lands far from their own true culture, their identity. Totally detached from the motherland. One would say, "Go Back HOME". Like I said before, the double edged sword waits to cut you. This is "The way it is for some of us" Whoever created this world, certainly made it Hell on Earth but continue to sell a place in the sky as the place to accept the suffering until we get to the Pearley gates!!

My Dad loved this song and would ask me to make compilation tapes and this song was every one on both sides along with Jessica by the Allman Brothers. He loved Duke Ellington, Oscar Peterson, any boogie-woogie styled piano. He locked into virtuoso pianists. This song always moved me, this version gave me the gift of tears. Thank You Mr. Hornsby on behalf of my Father who loved you. What isn't to love?

@@waffles1ca The beloved Holy Spirit is enigmatic, but of course would never deceive. The movie "Don't look up" is pastiche for most of the way until its divinity becomes clear at the near-final "dining table scene" (which also includes Di Caprio's beautiful ad-lib). There is quite a bit of great music associated with the movie, but stunningly great is "Second Nature", which we can immediately see as a clever title, of at least three meanings. The song matches, with many lyrics likewise being parable-like in having 3 meanings simultaneously. Quite a bit is deeply religious in the second layer, and the song is achingly and entrancingly beautiful, as befits the movie. It is sung by Bon Iver (which from French connects with the greeting/blessing "Good Winter" aa used by people in the series "Northern Exposure"). In my view the wondrous "Second Narure" is the greatest song of recent years, and the Holy Spirit's raising of it into transcendence is seen clearly enough. The writer/singer admits to being "inspired" and concedes that it "came easily'. I know that feeling ... I am having it now, as I do whenever I post in reference, directly or indirectly, to Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Probably it is clear to you (as Eurovision a few days ago made clear) that, while the Holy Spirit can inject His love and truth into a song, so the darkness can inject his deception, distraction and destruction ... and that in the 2020s is a more overt process than it has ever been. Of course, "Don't look up" IS a work of End-Times type content, while "Second Nature" features the word "Rapture"...

Bruce was incredible at Southbank Centre this past week. I lived 25 miles away from him for the past 18 years and never had the time to see him perform. I'm the idiot. But happy to have moved to London and fortunate-enough to have heard him play - just seven row away too. Teary-eyed and happy.

A few years ago my wife and I went to see Bruce at the Broad theater on the Santa Monica City College campus for his Solo tour. My wife was a huge fan; I only marginally knew his work. I was blown completely away. Bruce is an astounding pianist. His left/right hand independence is unmatched. It’s mind bending. As soon as I saw the thumbnail I clicked and turned it up. Two notes in my wife from the next room over announced “It’s Bruce!”

Such a beautiful piece of music, which takes me to another place. That place was the late 80s when, as a teenager, I’d just joined the British military. They were tough days with some nasty experiences. My escape was the local pub, when we were allowed off base, where this song seemed to always be playing on the jukebox. Now whenever I hear it, I’m transported back to those days and am overcome by an eery, dark, but nostalgic feeling. Twenty years of service; I hope I did some good.

Bruce Hornsby's first two albums are perfect for driving through the countryside on a crisp autumn day, with the hillsides covered in red, yellow and green, and the eagerness of youth calling you on. I did that many times in the 80s. Can't believe it's been so long.

Bruce has come a long way from when I saw him play at the Jolly Ox in Hampton Virginia in 1978. The first time I heard him I thought if this guy doesn't make it big there is something seriously wrong with the music business. I got to see him and the Range in Germany in 1986 as the opening act for Huey Lewis and I got a note to him back stage before the show and he remembered me so I got to go back stage. He is truly a gifted musician fluent in many styles. And as near as I can tell he did it his way playing music he wanted to play and not just selling out for the money. He is an American musical treasure.
