I love just sitting down for five minutes, doesn't matter where I am, and just letting life flow past me as I listen to this. I think of people I've met, some no longer with me, some happy in their own lives, and some I lost contact with, and can only hope they're doing okay. I always take time to consider other people around me in a wider context and the life path they are on, and it gives me a massive 'yeah life can suck, but overall right now it's all right' kind of feeling. Love and light to everyone reading this

I am 76 and have lived with music all my life and have over 1,000 LP's/CD's starting in the 1950's. Each decade has produced its own stars and Bruce was certainly one of those of the 80's. However I felt that after the 80's the standard started to decline and I have bought virtually nothing since 2000. I feel privileged to have lived in what has been probably the best period in history for popular music.

For a long long time I have thought much the same thing.. But at the age of 55, I no longer play CDs or Vinyl much, yet I am enjoying more music than I ever have….because KZfaq has it all there, all the great stuff from the beginning of recorded music basically… but what it also has is a lot of music I would never have found before YT came along. It might be great new covers of old classics, or else it might be brand new music being played by the kinds of artists you’ll have never heard of, but they know how to write and play real melodies, not that worthless crap that we hate, churned out by the famous but talentless twerking hacks of today. You just have to delve into all the stuff YT brings up whenever you play a song… It’s just a fantastic new world of endless and practically free music !

I like this comment, but, Demetre, I want you to imagine what would would happen if you sent Bruce back to the 1880s to sing his song. What do you think the effect of that would be? Would they even understand it as music? Does that mean that music - a form of art practised for thousands of years - is still evolving? And if that is true, how is that even possible? Wouldn't that be a God-given miracle right there?

I love this song too. It’s about human suffering that goes on in this world. This song was released in 1986. 37 years ago. Nothing has changed. Governments all around the world, still allow poverty and wars to go on. They allow all kinds of abuse and injustices to people and animals to go on. All for the love of money. That’s just the way it is. Looks like the only time it’s going to change is when Jesus Christ comes again. To judge the living and the dead. At least, then, there will be justice and peace. Thank God.
@sidpheasant75859 ай бұрын
Many of us love the song, but where does the joy in it come from? Why is it even there? Because it is love and truth and insight. Those are divine things, offered by the Holy Spirit and properties of Jesus. This is how the song can be beautiful, and indeed close to perfection on earth...

I really don't know why but I get all chocked every time I hear this. What a beautiful, timeless classic. Up there with the best of them Bruce.
@sidpheasant7585 Жыл бұрын
I DO know why ... because the Holy Spirit helped Bruce come up with this immaculate and tremendous piece of art. We can't even say if it is happy, sad, melancholy or ecstatic, for it is all at the same time. It's love and truth (and genius) - precisely what the Holy Spirit is...
@tommac5924 Жыл бұрын
@@sidpheasant7585 Sid there is a KZfaq clip where he explains all. He seen poverty, injustice and racism on the streets in his home town. A great vid to watch
@sidpheasant7585 Жыл бұрын
@@tommac5924 Yes have seen it, and do like it. I am fairly clear about his motivation, as is he. But I am interested in the mechanism allowing him to give sublime effect to what he felt. That is the miraculous part. We know Bruce is talented, but this piece transcends all the others, and transcends simplistic concepts like happy or sad. That happens when the Holy Spirit swings into action behind us, to give us wisdom, insight, strength and capacity to act... If we do not realise what has happened to us it might be seen as a lost opportunity, though the effect is there anyway. But I did realise when I stopped being "blind", and I'm very grateful for that, so I try to pass on and give back, as with this correspondence to you.

@@panqake4318 Until you hear Keane's "Somewhere only we know" (2004), Frank Turner's "The Way I tend to be" (2013), Coldplay's "Strawberry Swing" (2009), Newton Faulkner's "If this is it" (2009), Elbow's "One day like this" (of 2008), or even Take That's "The Flood" (2010). There are more divinely-inspired hits in which we can see the beloved Holy Spirit at work, just as we can with Bruce Hornsby. Give them a try, if you do not know them. Let me know if you see what I am on about or not. None of that is to take anything away from the magnificence of many 1970s and 1980s hits. But then The Beatles were 1960s, and the amazing "Ordinary World" from Duran Duran (yes, really) was 1993 - and that is one of the best songs, one of the best pieces of music of any kind, ever produced...

The same could be said about the Holy Spirit as giver of signs (including in music) and gifts (including discerning the divinity in music). Nothing not to like about Him either, so it stuns me that so many say no to Him of never ask Hm to come. He left this world on 14th December 2020 and whenever I hear this song , it take me back to last summer and I can't stop bawling 😢 I miss you so much Ben. Love you always my boy ❤❤❤

One of the most moving pieces of piano playing in human history. It is signature for Bruce Hornsby. It moves my spirit. It is unforgettable and it is simply beautiful. The words carry their own message but for me, I am separated entirely by the music which is so deep in its composition that all I can think about is the hope of reunification with my beloved mother and father in heaven one day with my precious son and brother, both healed from their disabilities - no more tears, no more hurting, just utter joy and happiness forever thanks to the indescribable love, amazing grace and finished work of our Lord and Saviour. Thank You Jesus. I am eternally grateful.

So it seems that I may not be the only one to think that the Holy Spirit/Paraclete is somehow in this music, inspiring, residing, spreading love and truth and understanding through it. This is to take NOTHING away from Bruce himself, a genius. But it takes something extra special to raise our earthly genius into transcendant understanding and connectivity.

It also breaks all the audio rules of mid-1980s hit singles - it uses real piano instead of synclavier, there's no big reverb pop on the snare, the bass isn't a fake funk slap-bass synth. It's not "urban dance", it's not "metal ballad", and it's not Hi-NRG. I don't know the story behind the song, but I bet the record company said "oh this will never be a hit single" but put it out anyway just to shut someone up, and then were surprised when it took off.

UNFORGETTABLE SONGS- THIS IS ONE . Standing in line, marking time Waiting for the welfare dime 'Cause they can't buy a job The man in the silk suit hurries by As he catches the poor old ladies' eyes Just for fun he says, "get a job" That's just the way it is Some things will never change That's just the way it is Ah, but don't you believe them Said, hey little boy you can't go where the others go 'Cause you don't look like they do Said, hey old man how can you stand To think that way Did you really think about it Before you made the rules? He said, "son That's just the way it is Some things will never change That's just the way it is Ah, but don't you believe them" Oh yeah well, they passed a law in '64 To give those who ain't got a little more But it only goes so far Because the law don't change another's mind When all it sees at the hiring time Is the line on the color bar, no, no That's just the way it is And some things will never change That's just the way it is That's just the way it is, it is, it is, it is

Tupac just stole a masterpiece from Bruce is how i remember it,and it says a lot that the biggest song he sung was not written by him,
@kartiktugnait3 жыл бұрын
@@charliekenwright6324 No, he sampled it and made his own rendition of it. Your memory is distorted by your mental filter cough... racism. Tupac discussed topics in his version Bruce didn't. Tupacs biggest song is California Love. He's one of the most successful hip hop artists without this in his discography. This was released after his death, so he had no say on the recording and release. What says more about him is his illustrious discography, and cultural influence. Make opinions that have credibility and validity, otherwise be prepared to be schooled.
@JimInNashville3 жыл бұрын
@@kartiktugnait Tupac built his rap around a sample from this brilliant song. Tupac's lyrics are nihilistic, and, in retrospect, wrong, although they certainly express his personal truth. Hornsby's song was a musical masterpiece, marked by some brilliant piano riffs. It was a song of truth, but also one of hope. Hornsby said "don't you believe it" to the suggestion that some things will never change. Tupac's was one of misery, predicting America couldn't take a black president, which it did, in fact within a few years, and that although things have to change, they probably won't. Bottom line, Hornsby has more *musical* creativity in the first 3 minutes of this song than in any 10 Tupac songs. At this point, the destructive legacy of rap and hip hop is all too clear.
@kartiktugnait3 жыл бұрын
@@JimInNashville Tupac has made a huge cultural impact, has an illustrious career that Hornsby never had. Tupac was more blunt and brutally honest, instead of having naive hope of some Utopian future. Your wrong about the "black president" line, since he wrote this song in the mid 90s, and Obama got elected in 08 he's also half white. Tupac's song was about hope and motivation. That we better start making changes or things will always be like this. Tupac was never about political correctness. Remember, Tupac was also a successful Actor, Poet, and Activists to add on top of really successful hip hop career. You should do your research before making ludicrous claims and absurd assumptions.

One of my many regrets is that I never learned to play music. I tried to learn piano at the age of 9 but the teacher, a ghastly woman who lived above a bar called the Rising Sun (no, really), would beat me for not knowing something or other, so I decided I must be no good and gave it up. If she had not abused me I could probably sit at a piano today and play the intro to this song, just like we see in the first twenty seconds here, and that would make me happier than if I won the Lottery. But she did, and I can't, and that's another reason why paedophilia is wrong.
