Lyrics:
The song came and went
Like the times that we spent
Hiding out from the rain under the carnival tent
I laughed and she'd smile
It would last for awhile
You don't know what you've got till you lose it all again
Listen to the mandolin rain
Listen to the music on the lake
Oh, listen to my heart break every time she runs away
Oh, listen to the banjo wind
A sad song drifting low
Listen to the tears roll
Down my face as she turns to go

The nostalgia that comes with this one. Going out to dinner with my parents some rainy friday night. Soft Rock radio spilling out these gems that i would always remember. Summer afternoons with VH1 on as my mom would iron clothes with the windows open wide. Its not just about the 80s. They were like no other time. But also, Its about being young in a world surrounded by the things and people who will become the very core of who you are. The memories and innocence. The songs you didnt know would mean so much. The ones you listen to over and over again at 41. Music is my time travel. I put this one on and im back home, away from everything. Safe. Loved. Beautiful

My father-in-law was helped by home hospice in 2008. During a terrible time the hospice workers provided an incredibly helpful service. Thank you for what you do. It allows the families to focus on spending their last days on their loved one, instead of the medical condition of the loved one.

I was sitting at my desk early.this morning and this song came on. I started crying and just couldn't stop. My brother is dying. Losing his battle with cancer. Suffering. He use to play this song all the time growing up. I kept thinking of hearing him sing this song...thinking of how his voice sounds. I'm hurting, but smiling at the same time. 🙏🏾

Agreed, anyone who had not heard "The Way it is" would say that! For Bruce is a talented, kind, genius. But once at least he was co-working with the Holy Spirit, and that is what makes the difference... The fact is that we don't want to keep the rain, because that is the very symbol and sign of the Holy Spirit...

I haven't heard this song in over 20 years and I was instantly transported back to my early teenage years in the mid-80s. The memories came flooding back and for some reason the tears started flowing down my face. My Dad. I think of my Dad and his old record player. He sat alone in the dark a lot...sipping on a cold one. Vietnam. PTSD. This was before they got divorced. I get it now. Rest easy Dad. 🎶♥️

I remember my stepdad and his friends taking us to see Bruce Hornsby when I was older. It was a small outdoor concert but I didn't realize they were going to try to sneak in. So when it got dark everyone sort of dwindled inside separately. I was somehow scuttled down a certain row and I literally ended up like 3 feet from the stage as this song began. I will never forget the tears instantly streaming down my face. I remembered this song vividly from childhood, we moved around so much, there was a lot of loss for me growing up and not a lot of money to indulge in anything like a live concert. I think the moment seemed so surreal like you couldn't explain what that song did for me in that moment.

It's funny. If you grew up in this era, you constantly heard songs like this on the radio; there was so many lyrically amazing songs in those days but you paid no mind. You sang along and paid virtually no attention to the lyrics. Then one day, you're grown up and you finally "hear" some of those songs, Mandolin Rain being one and it occurs to you just how lucky you were to have been a part of that time. There will never be another era like it. "You don't know what you've got, til you lose it all again."

This song is about heartbreak and finding solace in music. The lyrics describe a person going through a difficult breakup, feeling the pain of lost love. The mention of "mandolin rain" might symbolize the healing power of music during tough times. Even though the rain is falling, music, like the sound of a mandolin, offers comfort and a way to cope with sadness. This song reminds us that in our lowest moments, music can be a source of emotional support and can help us navigate the storms of life.

The Way It Is has political themes@@Rotstift-nr2cw . Mandolin Rain is a tribute to a past that is gone, never to be found again, like the end of the relationship that Hornsby is singing about. Poignant and beautiful

@@Rotstift-nr2cwNo it's not about politics. Seriously? Listen to the words maybe? It's about a lost relationship and him reminiscing about the past relationship. He has another song about social injustice, but this is definitely not it!!
