Shayne Patrick's story of survival is one of the greatest learning opportunities in recent memory for those who wish to explore bear country safety.
While on his honeymoon, Shayne set off with mission to photograph a great grey owl. But his path instead intersected a grizzly cub-and its highly protective mother.
While struggling for his life, something truly remarkable happened. As the bear went for the kill, biting at Shayne's head the heard a pop and thought the grizzly had punctured his skull. But what sounded like his doom was his salvation.
Watch the full video for the live-saving lessons evident in Shayne's experience. And learn more about bear safety by watching the videos below:

Awesome story. So sorry this dude had to go through this after everything else, but seriously, hats pff to this amazing fellow. His willingness to admit he froze. His willingness to recognize that the bear was just being a bear. Hats off to you Shane. I sincerely hope you and your wife have a long happy life together.

Great video. Yes, bears are so much faster than people imagine, and even well-seasoned and armed guides have been killed. Holding a can of spray behind your neck seems like it should become a recommended action if you haven't deployed it. Also, being off trail also inhibits rescue! Those 2 hours of waiting must have been terrifying.

Very well put. There have been a few people who similar to Shayne held onto their bear spray and have managed to spray the bear while prone and being attacked. It’s a remarkable tool. So glad Shayne was able to benefit from it, even if by accident. I’ll be thinking of him should I ever find myself in a similar situation.

Excellent video, as we have come to expect from your channel! I’m glad Shayne survived, but given the number of truly ignorant errors he made that led up to the attack, his survival is miraculous. As you pointed out, hiking 1) alone, 2) off trail, and 3) with little consideration of bear safety (evidenced by his purchase of bear spray at the last minute and not having trained with it) were all grave errors. Also: he and his wife had a dog with them, and the scents and sounds of dogs will alarm bears and make them more likely to be aggressive even when the dog is not in the immediate area. While observing grizzlies feeding on berries in late summer as a student many years ago, I saw the bears routinely ignore human hikers on the fire road 200 yards from their location, and feeding unperturbed. Yet when humans accompanied by dogs were in the road, the bears stopped feeding and watched carefully until the human-dog parties were long out of sight. Dogs clearly agitate bears, and an agitated bear is an aggressive bear. If you are going to a wilderness area, leave your dog at home!

Thanks! Shayne definitely contributed by some of the decisions he made. But I’ve met many people who are far less prepared, and far more reckless, but who have not been tested as Shayne was. I’m convinced each attack is an opportunity to learn. I get the feeling Shayne’s experience has already been eye-opening for him and he understands that he wasn’t quite prepared enough. Still, I think Shayne deserves far more praise than criticism. Not only did he try to prepare, but he made some very solid choices when the attack came. He seems to be genuine in his self-appraisal AND he is sharing his story with the rest of us so we can benefit from his missteps and his success. He also advocated for the bears despite his injuries. I think that deserves celebration. I know for a fact, that he and Chloe now better understand the hazards of bringing their dog into grizzly country.

A few points.... All bear attacks are unique. Shane was extremely lucky. Bear spray is only a tool. Shanes attack may have turned out differently if he'd been armed and relied on his combat experience. I do agree that its crucial to train with your tools of choice. The reality is that there is far more training with firearms than there ever will be with BS (bear spray). Here is an example of people going through the motions of buying spray and not learning what it's for and how to deploy it... A national park just out my back door where many attacks have occurred, a woman bought spray and at the trailhead lined up her children and hosed them down with it. She said she thought it was bear repellent! A large number of people never even take it out of the package.

Many persons go into the wilderness to temporarily escape responsibility while immersing themselves in beauty. Wilderness is a double edge sword. Have met hikers and campers who have never taken medical provisions or weapons. Claimed it ruined the experience.

We love Nature but we need to remember that she doesn't love us back. We find beauty in things that would kill us. Glacially topped mountains, powerful waterfalls, etc. We're drawn to them. Mistaking nature for a child's picture book of nature can get you killed. And it's not the big scary things that kill most people. It's things that would be trivial nearer civilization. You absolutely must have real experience or go with people who do. And if cell coverage is spotty, have an emergency satellite communication device.

spray is a must carry. but nothing is a cure all and if bears and the spray are misunderstood or miss used it can not help. carrying a gun is no better if you freeze, panic or in that situation can not make a good shot or shoot too soon or have a false sense of security that makes you be stupid.

I live in Alaska and and an Air Taxi Pilot. I've had to shoot 7 bears over the past 5 years. Much of what you say is Not true. First off you always go into the woods in groups of people. Dogs and I say multiple are your best alert about bears. Second you always want to carry a 12 ga shotgun loaded with rifled slugs having burning magnesium tips. Anything less is not adequate. You have a simple whistle you can blow every 60 seconds. Forget bear spray its useless..If you see a bear you stop moving and ready shotgun. if it goes away fine but if it moves towards you you open fire. Bear attacks are Unpredictable.This stuff about fighting back lie motionless are all unknow variables. You never know what the bear will do. If your dumb enough to let a bear get to you well then its all fate.

Bear spray is NOT a good choice when inside grizzly bear country especially in windy conditions. A proper caliber firearm with proper ammunition such as fmj is a far better choice when encountering a bear especially a predatory bear. On a windy day such as this man , bear spray is not affective and will dose you if sprayed into the wind. This man encountered a protective mother bear but if it were a predatory bear attack, he may not have survived.

It's interesting that humans use the term "Momma bear" as a positive term for human mothers actively protecting their young from danger but when real female bears do just that suddenly it is not. We go where they live which makes us the trespassers and them the defenders.

It is a strange contradiction. It think nature is just too foreign and too scary for most people to sympathize or appreciate the world wild animals occupy. Speaking for myself, the more time I spend with wild animals, the more I respect them and more I discover a kind of kinship with them.

@heavenboundtoourlord, you are drawing many false inferences from my reply. Do I believe in randomness? Yes. Do I believe in order? Yes. But not in all things. Shayne’s experience has elements of randomness, while other decisions directly contributed to the outcome. Greater powers are at work throughout the universe, but so is randomness. They are not mutually exclusive. They are both constants. Two things can be true at the same time. Both randomness and order can and do coexist.
@heavenboundtoourlord
@heavenboundtoourlord 4 күн бұрын
@@HomeInWildSpaces If I've drawn eny false inferences and defined your views incorrectly then that is not good; I do not intend to be rude and insensitive; just to get to the point and challenge each other if we haven't really thought about the background to 'random order'. I think we agree; experience is one interwoven tapestry of overall beauty despite pleasure/pain, predator/prey. The Bible (Ultimate Truth) puts it this way: Isaiah 45:7 I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things. "Enlightenment is a destructive process. It has nothing to do with becoming better or being happier. Enlightenment is the crumbling away of untruth. It's seeing through the facade of pretense." If we have the courage to research child sacrifice and the 'ancient' temples of the antediluvian world, then we can begin to get a balanced spiritual picture; all religion stems from the blood of a Child and there is either one of two spirits that are the Creator and require blood; Christ, or satan. Don't try to pretend satan does not exist; if you attend a real séance or child sacrifice you will not stand thus.
