It’s kind of the story of Venus Williams’ career that she lost first and then Serena won thereafter. 1997 US Open, Venus made the final, 1999 Serena makes the final and beats the opponent that beat her.

I didn't see Venus avenging Serena's loss in the 2000 us open quarter finals by beating Lindsay Davenport in the finals

The Williams Wall. The sisters always had each other's back. Only five players managed to beat them both at the same tournament. Knowing Serena would be gone from the tour, Venus stepped up big time in 2017 to have her best season in many years despite still not winning the biggest titles.

@@chiedoziee Four at the Grand Slams, but five overall. Hingis AO 2001, Henin USO 2007, Clijsters USO 2009, & Plíšková USO 2016. Janković has the distinction of beating both sisters in a 24-hour period during Rome 2010.

@@got2bjosh Graf beat them both in Sydney in 1999, and Arantxa crushed them in Sydney 1998, but those were all early in their careers.

Kutsnetzova was almost on the list. i can remember an intervieuw were she explained how she was knock off her concentration. The second set she was leading and was 2 points away from winning that set....... but it was on Serena's serve. She said Serena hit back to back aces wich she never saw........ only the roars and the umpire makes her realized that the ball was in. She said she never recover after that mentally... and lost the 3th easily........

@@ayoayo7730 I think so, but I could be wrong. I remember when that quote was making the rounds. "The better sister," hun please! They're both lethal & have achieved more than you ever will. That said, Venus should've retired at the end of 2017 & Serena should've retired at the end of 2019.

I must say…. it’s more difficult to beat both Williams Sisters in the same tournament and actually win the title… I think Henin (2007 US Open), Clijsters (2002 WTA Championships and 2009 US Open), and Davenport (2004 Los Angeles Open) have done it… Can’t remember if there was anyone else…

I remember watching that Venus match vs Stosur at Charleston on a live stream and it remains the ONLY time I’ve ever heard Venus shout out “FUCK!” in frustration and then apologize immediately after. Unfortunately none of the highlight clips I’ve seen have that point (prob bc it was a Vee error). But it was very funny esp since she’s so low key… although she def got feistier after she came back from the Sjogren’s layoff

Arantxa Sanchez beat both... But that was really early on. I don't even think Serena was ranked above 200. Steffi Graf defeated both, but did not win the tournament ... Both were early in the careers of the Williams' sisters.

Venus moves more quickly and swiftly on the court but her ground strokes and unforced errors eroded her own game. Serena’s mobility on the ground is not as swift as Venus but her ground strokes are more stable and dependable than Venus.

Beating both sisters at the same tournament was never an easy task. So many had tried but only a handful could do that. 1998: Sydney International-Arantxa Sanchez Vicario 1999: Sydney International-Steffi Graf 2001: Australian Open-Martina Hingis (Serena in the QF and Venus in the SF) 2002: WTA Finals: Kim Clijsters (Venus in the SF and Serena in the F) 2004: JP Morgan Chase Open, Los Angeles-Lindsay Davenport 2007: US Open-Justin Henin (Serena in the QF and Venus in the SF) 2009: US Open-Kim Clijsters (Venus in the 4th round and Serena in the SF) 2010: Italian Open-Jelena Jankovic Kim Clijsters is the only player who beat both sisters in the same tournament twice. Elsewhere, as this video says, there were so many chances to beat both of them, in most cases, Venus was beaten but mighty Serena was unstoppable

to be fair, Serena always had to advantage because a lot of opponents played Venus first and Venus definitely gave her advice on how to beat a lot of players. Serena mentioned this in her interview of "The Black List" series. At the same time, while only 4 players have ever beaten them in the same tournament- only 3 of these are actually impressive. Karolina Pliskova beating Venus is 2016 isn't exactly that great of an achievement considering her age and the illness - sure she made two GS finals in 2017 but Venus was well past her prime anyways.

It does frustrate me how Serena’s always mentioned as a great player in her own right. Venus just is always referred to as an extension of her as “the Williams sisters”.

That’s how it should be really. Venus was never the aggressor/fighter like Serena was and preferred to play big sister role vs being a competitor…

Then you don't know tennis. Serena was WAY better, duh. Venus' play was always a bit too sloppy & less stable. Like Rublev, Venus' 2nd serve is way too predictable. You're only as good as your 2nd serve. Serena's was the best. Venus never won AO or FO, was #1 for a mere 11 weeks, & only won YEC once. Against similar rivals, Venus often has a losing H2H while Serena maintains the edge in her favor. There's no contest. Get over it.

I mean it's obvious why. Though, I will say that Venus being viewed in association with Serena often leads to people thinking of them in their heads as the same player stylistically and skill-wise when they really aren't.

Graf beat em back to back 19.99 ,Henin beat them back to back 2007, Hingis beat them back to back 2001, three off the top of my head., very dominant for a while, Venus only winning two slams outside of Wimbledon ,in a career longer than anyone ever, tis a shame sbe loses to players she would anhiliate

And she went on to do what?? Marty carillo proclaimed her the best thing since sliced bread after both wins and handed her the trophy. All she had to do was have her picture taken with the trophy after winning the final. But Kerber decided to snatch it instead and lil karolina hasn’t done anything, absolutely nothing since having beaten both sisters lol.
