Featured in this analysis is the chess game between Garry Kasparov and John Nunn from the 1982 Chess Olympiad. The opening is a Benoni Defense, Pawn Storm variation. In the opening, Kasparov’s f-pawn seemed to have an eye on supporting an e5 break, but this soon changed in the middlegame. Kasparov’s f-pawn stormed ahead, not only inducing weaknesses on Black’s kingside but also opening a file and diagonal for his pieces. In the final position, we observe the dominant posts of Kasparov’s knights in Nunn’s house, with the white queen having watched the 21-move game all the while from home base.
I'm a self-taught National Master in chess out of Pennsylvania, USA who was introduced to the game by my father in 1988 at the age of 8. Hi Jerry, long time subscriber. I wanted to thank you for the frequent updates with the miniatures. I love all your content, from these shorter videos to longer form content of many kinds. I have to say though that some of my favorite content is the commentary on long time control chess you're playing. There's something very peaceful about them, and I still find them very engaging. The longer silences between moves both help me relax, and if I'm trying to engage from a personal chess improvement perspective, it gives me more time to make assessments about what moves and ideas might come next. Thank you for all the great content.

In the 70s I played on John Nunn's 6 man team and I remember him showing how to play the white side of the Benoni like this, and he thought it was, correctly, almost winning for white. I am surprised he chose this as black against Kasparov and even more surprised that he nearly equalized just before blundering.

Man That queen is so cool! I mean, how he creates queen threats without even moving it, just by opening up lanes around it. She is being a real boss.

9.a4 is the main line, but there are some other ideas, too. I soaked 9.Be2 from an Anna Cramling video. It's super counter-intuitive but in fact it's quite flexible. You bring the bishop back so that black's a7-a6 wouldn't come with tempo. The bishop still controls b5 from there preventing b7-b5. And if they try to support it with a7-a6, you react with a2-a4. Black won't have any Nb8-Na6 ideas available then. If Nb8-Na6 by black, white has a2-a3 available which can be considered as an advantage over the main line.

Some of these ideas are really deep, I don't think playing a4 to secure the knight there would ever occur to me. Once the knights took over the center it just became a slaughter everywhere, lol, why is John Nunn always on the receiving end of a brilliancy?

The Benoni structure on the *White* side is damned hard to crack: especially if it manages to form that spearhead with Pawns on square d5, flanked and protected by Pawns on c4 and e4.

Just a quick note on "Black plays in the best way". The stats for 14...f6 are W+3, D=2, B-0. Meanwhile the stats for 14...Bf6 are W+0, D=1, B-2. Sometimes you have to be a little careful in translating computer recommendations into practical choices for human play. The most recent example here would be Navara - Galchenko 2023. Finally, the line with 8...Nbd7 is quite a famous one in the Benoni and has seen a number of attempts by black over the years to prove viability. Sadly many of these took place in the 80s and do not make it into modern chessbases. One game that should be on your radar if you are interested in the idea is Lautier - Ivanchuk 1995, which continued (14. Be3) Nxc3+; 15. bc Qe4; 16. Qf3 Qxf3; 17. Nxf3 fe; 18. de 0-0. Perhaps surprisingly, black's record in this variation is in no way worse than the main line, so describing 8...Nfd7 as "an only reply" is quite misleading.
