Never in life have I ever washed grits! It makes as much sense to me as washing corn meal, oat meal or flour! The only thing you are washing off is starch! The water becomes clear because the surface starches have been washed away.

@@angiecarter8979 Well, and this is just for one example, consider many pesticides and fungicides need to remain on the crop in order to be effective, so chemicals are used to make them stick, otherwise they would rinse off in rain or overhead irrigation. This is why they use chemicals to help the pesticides stick. When rinsing the food, only water soluble chemicals would have a chance of being washed away. But, you won't find much water soluble chemicals because they aren't practical for them to be used. Washing rarely hurts (washing raw meats spreads bacteria that would already be killed when cooking, so it's better not to rinse it), but to break chemical bonds that may be keeping something on your food is not often as simple as washing in water, which I believe is what @jtampasaint was saying.

Yes ma’am! I always rinse my rice, beans, grits, etc before cooking. And I freeze any cornmeal or flour at minimum overnight when I first get it. I do like to add half water/half milk or cream and loads of butter into my grits (just like my Daddy did). Then I just let them cook low and slow…my Daddy always used to tell me longer when I’d try to take them off the stove! The longer they cook down the creamier they get. So delicious with over medium fried eggs mixed into them. There is no better breakfast!

Well I’ll be! My Mama never washed hers, so I didn’t. I’ll never cook grits again though without washing them. I saw the water getting clearer and clearer as you washed the grits. That is important, as well as getting most of the black things out. Thank you so much for that. I’m 70 and just learned a new trick! I loved hearing you say, “Wash your hands!” My Dad never let me enter the kitchen without asking, “Did you wash your hands?” He did it so much, it was like a joke. I would never enter the kitchen without doing that. My pet peeve is not changing out the hand towels. They must be changed out every day. If they are used a lot, twice a day. Some people never change them out but every few days. That is nasty. It’s the same with the dish cloth. Get a new one every day, and don’t let it stay in the bottom of the sink either. Anyway, I loved you saying to wash your hands, and the Dudes were adorable.

@@bonnievalls5037 Same here. When I was a teenager, I asked her why she washed the Sunday roast with dish soap. She told me she did it because meat was so dirty. So, I asked her about the sausage and ground beef. Geez, you never want to sass a southern Grandma! 😜

You know what? I have always cleaned my grits, the process was passed down by my Great Grandmother to the ladies in my family.. never ever seen this done till i ran across your YT.. I cant eat grits outside my home due to the black specks in them.. Good to know I'm not the only one extra conscious about cleaning "EVERYTHING "🤣.. Thank you and God Bless MJ
