The black/dark specks you see in your grits are the particles of germ that are left in the product. The germ of the corn kernel is naturally darker in color and it is absolutely normal to see grey/black/dark flecks throughout your 🌽. You also see black specks in 🌮 it’s not harmful. You’re basically washing ALL the starch out like many do rice 🍚

Good morning! Yes we ate sugar grits when mom fixed them. But I do eat them different with other recipes. And yes washing grits even cornmeal is a true plus. Thank you for showing and being clean!!!! For me prepping cook space is wipe down , start coffee, get food out and ready for my great niece and nephew back in the day, when I lived with them. Once I was told that I had issues! OH NO I DON'T! My food , raw veggies, meats, fruits, fish, poultry, all washed and any frozen bags, and can goods r washed when they come into house before put away. GLOVES are a true must in kitchen. I take out more than two pairs cause I change them. I'm a free hand artist by life, cooked as a cook for places of children, and food places. I was always like this before I ever left home. Cleanliness ran in family. 👌🏾. This is where I always say " Don't eat after everybody." Have a bless day Mrs. Donna.

I made grits the other day and I didn’t think to wash them. After seeing this video I’ll try washing them next time. The internet explains that grits are.. “The finished grain products that are typically boiled in water, and served as a breakfast cereal or side dish.” So technically you can eat grits as a hot cereal (ie with sugar) or as a side dish (ie with salt, pepper and butter). Basically, the choice is yours alone and whatever you prefer doesn’t make it wrong.

Well I guess I learned something new. I was born in Shreveport, Louisiana and I know that grits are made from ground corn. My grandfather was a sharecropper and he explained to me that grits were made of ground corn. Sometimes they're imperfections on the corn. I think that's what that black stuff that you see is starch. My big mama. Never rinsed her's ,but I'll give it a try. I definitely wash my rice.

@@aprilsunshine7565I do sugar. Depending on how I want it to be sometimes I like savory grits as it is showing on here. Sometimes I make sweet grits but then they can use whatever seasoning you want to as long as it takes good there should be a rule on how it has to be done with all these types of flavored butters, and all these types of seasonings in the world I’m not going to limit grits to just butter and sugar or butter and salt. I am watching you wash your grits and you wash them so many times so it gave me an idea I thought I would go on Google and ask what are those little black specks that be in the grit they say they're germ particles that's leftover for the from the corn or the grain whatever it is they say is germ particles so I guess it is good to rinse your grits I think I'll try rinsing them even though I have never tried it before and never even thought about it but I did use to wonder sometime when I eat my grits what was the hard part of the the grit that I used to get a crunch from sometime I used to think I wasn't cooking them long enough but I know I was because I love eating my grits creamy but it was always sometime of hard crunch so maybe now I'll start washing them or eval try one time just to see if it give it a different taste but either way now I know what those black specks are that being the grits because I did go on Google to ask just saying

Hi 👋🏽 Mrs. Donna & Dude#1 . We have been washing our Grits for many years. My sweet Mother always washed her Grits and that’s why I do the same. As a matter of fact, my Mother was the only one I saw do that until now seeing that you also do. I was asked to cook breakfast 4th of July. I was asked why I was washing the grits and I told them my Mother did and that’s what I do. They said they had never heard or seen anybody to wash grits. I cooked for about 15 people. The grits were white and clean. They kept running to the stove for seconds and thirds talking about how good the grits were. I also had the bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs and biscuits. (No Sugar)Just salt 🧂 pepper and butter. 🙏🏽💕

Yes, Ms. Donna! I rinsed my grits for the first time, and it really did work. I was so tired of picking those black specks out (couldn't stand cooking grits) after cooking them. It's amazing how they just started appearing some decades ago. In the south you don't get those black things. I aiways cook my grits longer then five minutes. How ever long to remove all of the black specks. They end up real!!!! Creamy. Thats why my kids alway wanted me to cook the grits. Never thought about washing them. Which seems a lot easier. Going to try washing first. Thank you for the video lesson. And!!!!! I must try adding sugar, to see how they would taste. Thanks again.

I eat butter and sugar in my grits just like I do my cream of wheat, oatmeal and cocoa wheats. You eat your grits like you like your grits. I love Cracker Barrel’s grits. ❤️❤️

I’ve never washed grits, I’ll try it next time. When I boil the water, I drop a few chicken bouillon cubes in to flavor and not need much salt if any. Then I also hit it with some heavy cream and butter for extra creaminess. Delicious🤌🏽
