Reading only nonfiction isn't the only path to getting smart. Embracing both nonfiction and fiction is key to becoming a well-rounded thinker. Nonfiction sharpens your critical thinking and analysis by presenting factual information and logical frameworks. Meanwhile, fiction engages your imagination and deepens your understanding of characters and motives, boosting your empathy and emotional intelligence. Nonfiction expands your vocabulary in specific subjects and helps you articulate complex ideas clearly, while fiction enhances your overall language skills with its rich, diverse styles. Combining the structured learning of nonfiction with the imaginative experiences of fiction leads to comprehensive intellectual growth, blending analytical rigor with creative thinking for a more versatile intelligence.

Kids go to school to be exposed to many topics to figure out what interests them, to try out/fail and find what they are good at. Many people cannot do that and utilize the school environment to max, as no environment ever will be ideal or fairytale. Learning to ulitize any environment for your next steps in life is the key.

Here in the US it's more like 7-8 grades of "primary" school (which we call elementary school) -- so that's kindergarten through 6th grade (the 8th is because they put a lot of kids into some sort of pre-kindergarten class (why do we in the US use the German word for 'garden of children' is beyond me) ) then 2 years of "junior high" which is a transitionary period usually taking place in the same school as elementary school, and then 4 years of high school -- so that's at least 13 if not 14 years of school. So your point is well-taken. I read that Abraham Lincoln didn't get much formal schooling, but he read all the time (mostly law books because he was a lawyer in the early part of his life). So I agree reading is probably the biggest thing you can do.
