Korean dramatic horror/thrillers are in a unique league of their own. For the most part sincerely authentic, brutal and only utilize organic & nuanced humor or subtle comic relief, apposed to so much gimmicky mainstream US horror. I Saw The Devil, The Host, Thirst, The Wailing, Chaser, Oldboy & Vengeance Trilogy, Bedeviled, etc. Thank you, I'll have to find "Bloody Reunion"

Korean films are just on another level, seriously. It isn't to say it's better than everything else. It's just every single Korean movie I've watched thus far was amazing. Aside from maybe the exhausted and overdone zombie movies (not counting Busan. Still goated). The acting, delivery of every single word in every single line, the direction, the tone, the... everything. It's all perfect. It's basically what you're taught about what filmmaking is and what makes it good. They actually get it right, whereas on average here in the US they just don't. Especially in the horror genre. Korean films tend to have something special about them. The kinds of movies you can watch late at night without any interruptions, but that you don't want to fall asleep to. There's a lot of Kdramas I hold above most non-anime. Each episode is like a movie in a way too. And in terms of films, with how good and fulfilling a lot of the korean ones are, they're the only ones I hold at the same level or ranking as those kdramas. Most of em are hits. And yeah there are bad kdramas and films too, not saying there aren't. But isn't that the case for all others too? lol

I immediately paused this video halfway and watched it myself just a while ago. Man, what a frikkin trip this is. It’s not an easy watch at all, but the themes and emotional beats coupled with some really great acting make it all the worthwhile. You should do more reviews like these, Chris. You never disappoint me with these recommendations of lesser known foreign movies!

Yeah, I never felt much for the guy in ISTD because his fiancé is killed so early in the film and you don't get much of them and their relationship before she's murdered. Bedevilled gives you so much back story that you absolutely care about the leads and feel their pain. I was rooting for Boknam to kill everyone (and I mean everyone). Awesome film and much better in doing exactly what it set out to do, than ISTD.

Hey Chris! Thank you from Korea for reviewing this movie. Definitely one of the most powerful movies around that time. I often think that if this movie had come out at 2020s, it would have been much more appreciated, considering how much it addresses the issues that are actively discussed these days. Again, thank you for your review, and don't forget to watch Park Chan-Wook's "Decision to Leave" when it comes out!

I was looking for another movie with a similarly named and came across this one where I remembered faintly of a disturbing trailer. At the time, I think it was marketed as horror, and in a way, it is a horror film. The story is told not from the main character’s perspective, and we’re supposed to root for the visiting friend, and through her, she became our eyes and ears to witnessing the cruelty brought upon Bok-nam. The film is relentless in portraying the abuse, neglect, and torture of an island woman who had hardly any resources, and when her only hope dies, that is when shit hits the fan. It’s gruesome and cathartic. Then the final framing of the shot puts into perspective how we really are just an island floating in a sea of uncertainty.

Gosh, what a great movie. The best way to sum it up is that this film and Korean horror in general, makes it so that the film is a drama with horror seamlessly blended in. The audience is invested in the characters. So when things take a wrong turn there is real risk involved.

@@gearlord1968 ever since Chris announced he was finally writing and directing his own feature film he's been too afraid to unintentionally step on Hollywood's toes, and so he's done away with negative reviews and assigning letter grades to movies. Not to mention axing his Hilariocity reviews which was my personal favorite part of his channel and the thing that got me to sub his channel years ago. He's just too afraid to talk negatively about Hollywood anymore lest he burn any potential bridges that could help further his career in the future. I understand it but it's still kinda lame.
