@@Shyknit Yupp and think that was the whole point …it wasnt fully satisfying for us or him that’s why the cry at the end hits so hard ..,he did what he set out to do but the true realization of what had to be lost to get there was to much to hold in …it’s a raw example of the downside to revenge …that’s why it’s a top tier movie to me … America would have ruined the ending if it were made here 😂

The first time I saw this 12 years ago the ending absolutely fucking destroyed me. Soo-hyun tracked down, tortured and killed the man who took his wife away. He got his revenge. But at what cost? Revenge was ultimately futile. It didn't bring his wife back. His actions had others hurt or killed along the way. In the end, it didn't bring him peace or closure, and he lost so much of himself too. What a brutal and heartbreaking movie. It’s definitely my favorite revenge film for sure 😊

So glad you guys decided to check this one out, even though it wasn’t easy for you lmao the actor playing the killer is Choi Min-Sik, and he’s fucking incredible. His best role (and one of the best films ever made in my opinion) is that of the main character in Oldboy, which came out seven years prior in 2003. That movie has the same dark and gritty feeling as this one, with twists and turns that make you gasp, then cry, then gasp again. I won’t give much away plot-wise, but you two should definitely look into it and consider reacting to it! There are absolutely horror elements to it, but I guess I’d peg it as more of a psychological thriller?

This is my fave Korean horror movie (Sorry, Train To Busan). It's relentless, even when it gives you a moment to breathe, you're still holding your breath knowing that something will happen. The murderer was in Oldboy, which is another wild ride. Those Koreans know what they're doing! John Wick is worth watching. The dog scene is really sad, I won't lie to you. But the rest of the film is revenge for the dog, which is honestly such a perfect premise I'm shocked it wasn't used before. All the sequels are great too. That franchise has top notch action sequences. I know this might sound weird, but if you watch The Warriors and play Hotline Miami before watching John Wick 4, you'll appreciate that movie even more.

I interpreted the final crying scene not as a release of everything, but him realizing that she isn't coming back. Of course he always KNEW that, in his head, no one can just come back from the dead...but we sometimes get in in our head that revenge will make us feel better. And after all he did, he doesn't feel any better...he actually feels just as alone as he did when she died.

Choi Min-sik, absolutely phenomenal actor! Adding my voice to the recs you've had for Oldboy, that is an absolutely seminal movie. AND then you must watch Lady Vengeance, which he is also in, and which is probably one of my fav movies of all time. After that, the rabbit hole of Park Chan-wook horror movies must be next. Thirst, for example, is amazing. And though it's not gory so much as disturbing, Handmaiden, is probably one of the most perfect movies ever made. He also made a movie in English, Stoker, which brilliant too. Finally, to round out this journey into South Korean movie excellence, I'd also like to recommend A Tale of Two Sisters and Train to Busan.

i love that there are non-English selections on this channel. I used to consider this as one of those kinds of movies that are very good but could only be watched once. I remember when i first watched this, i kinda felt bad for a while ad sulked for days because it made me feel like the world is disgusting, dangerous and unfair, but i've consumed darker- and heavier-themed movies since and have rewatched this a few more times with friends who are new to korean films and it's become one of my favorite non-English thrillers. another one i wish to one day see on this channel is a reaction to the 2012 South Korean thriller "Confession of Murder", which is currently available on Amazon Prime (at least here in Japan it is). It has a Japanese remake which changed the story slightly but I think the original Korean one is superior.

What a “pleasant” surprise! Great point about the parallels of them both wiping the blood off their faces. It’s like some kind of ouroboros pendulum, what becomes a symbiotic, seemingly unending symbiotic relationship between an unmovable object and an unstoppable force. And the title itself is so brilliant, working on several levels. I think the director said that the actors also balanced each other out because he described the villain’s actor as having a hot (I believe) energy and the “hero” a cold / cool vibe. Which is true; as you mentioned, the antagonist was very visceral. And then I guess the hero was like a machine, laser focused, channeling everything into his pursuit. Great reaction!
