I actually went to Juilliard, got two degrees there, and currently play professionally in a symphony orchestra. When I tell you that I have met conductors EXACTLY like Tar, Blanchett’s portrayal was incredible and so realistic, as was the depiction of the classical music industry.

Well that's very interesting indeed. I adore classical music but don't play an instrument and have only on rare occasions gone to concerts. Though perhaps there are some characters in the music world like her I hope not too many! Music as said in the movie can express truths that cannot be expressed in words. But if we hear that music and behave like aholes towards others we've utterly missed the point and it's all about ego. In which case we should take up boxing or something like that! This is a comment about her character obviously. Not about the movie which was excellent in many respects especially Blanchett's actting.

The only good thing about Tar is Cate Blanchett’s performance because she really is nothing short of spectacular in it, but she really is the only reason why anyone should watch the film, because without her, the film would have been absolutely unbearable to watch to be honest.

TÁR is true cinema. People often complain about art dying in Hollywood, well guys it's here. TÁR is a masterpiece. For this role, Blanchett learned how to conduct, learned piano like a pro, spoke German, and did her own stunt driving. Had she been out of character even for split second, we wouldn't have believed her Performance, it was that difficult as she's in every frame of this movie basically. Cate Blanchett pulled Lydia Tar off with such precision. Her technical mastery truly is unparalleled. Best living actress hands down.

The tonal balance of the script is absolutely masterful. There are a lot of elements of typical dramas, but the film also goes into weird, creepy, surreal, funny, absurd, straight-up horror, and even had one reference that made me laugh hysterically for a few minutes (if you know, you know). Not only is it extremely well-executed, but it’s different, and it should stand the test of time.

I didn't know what it was all about, so it didn't do anything for me (I presumed that Tár was conducting music for an animated movie, or something like that; didn't seem like a big deal to me). I think Todd Field underestimated the number of people who would readily get such a reference. Or then I've just become so old, since modern goofy cartoonish monster games don't say anything to me. Watch the Julliard scene with the sound turned down and it tells a radically different story. Look beyond what you think the scene is saying and it becomes conceivable that the student is right to call her a f***ing b***h, not because of what she says, but because of how she acts. The narrative that follows actually vindicates the student, because, stripped of her talent, a f*****g b***h is all she is. What happens after this scene is that fate compels her to live up to the values she espouses at Juilliard by taking everything away from her.

Yes. One can gush over any number of film stars, actors and actresses, heroes and pinups to many, yet when the final curtain falls, Kate Blanchett will reside triumphant above all, uniquely, the greatest actor of all time. Whether it be stage or screen, she will hold the torch aloft as queen Kate for her passionate, utterly convincing performances in everything she does. It says nothing to recognize her extraordinary super human versatility. I just need to know one thing. If Kate is appearing, it matters not what it is, for I will be there, guaranteed not to be disappointed but rather having spent my money wisely, coming away yet again from another gold plated thought provoking performance. Perhaps Lawrence Olivier is the only actor to approach her stratosphere, though he was never as versatile.

Cate Blanchett is magnetic and the whole movie hinges on her shoulders; she’s in every scene of a 2 1/2hr runtime, and she’s captivating as a morally gray character that draws you in. From personal experience, conductors can be very intense because there’s this charge and rush they get being the one that controls the orchestra. I did notice that the nastiness comes out when she doesn’t have control or when something or someone threatens her or someone she loves. She’s indeed a powerhouse of an actress.

I think the deeper dives into the rhetoric and jargon of the music industry were to familiarize, in such a manner, the laymen with how seriously the Maestra took her job, her position, and her status. She knew exactly what it took, the knowledge and experience needed, to conduct (pardon the pun) her job--which subtle informed us of the severity of the risk for a downfall. It was devastating for Blanchett's character to experience a never-ending collection of setbacks wherein all that she did was build upon her successes and failures. Her succumbing to eventual career failure was jarring; this could serve as a metaphor for anybody at the height of their career. An homage to 'Streetcar Named Desire? Movie allusions would be apropos, here.

Although, I did not like the ending but every single other part of the film was phenomenal especially Kate blanchett's career defining role in this movie. 😁🙏💙

You have me sold on this film. Honestly, you can't go wrong with Blanchett and I thought this actually was a biopic! The fact that it isn't has me more intrigued to see the film. "The Talented Mr. Ripley" and "Notes on a Scandal" are my top Blanchett performances so I hope this rates right up there with those!

I’m honestly surprised that you reviewed this, but so glad you did! While my actual enjoyment of the film comes to question (since I hated Tár as a person. Fantastic character tho), I can’t deny how expertly crafted this film was and agreed with almost everything you said. I just believe we were meant to dislike Tár, but the writer-director managed to humanize her to, as you said, make everything feel realistic and not just an archetype. I also think that this movie managed to pace itself surprisingly well with a combination of great editing that would utilize jump-cuts during non-dialogue scenes, great script for whenever there wasn’t jump-cuts it would always be engaging, and the structure it had that always kept me guessing and never fell into a traditional three-act structure. I also loved how it utilized the opening credits, having it be in the form of an orchestral program. Very, very well done imo.

Totally agree about the best scene being the Julliard scene. The writing alone is sensational, and then you realize it was all done in one unbroken shot which is just incredible.

One movie this reminded me a LOT of is Michael Haneke’s The Piano Teacher. Both films deal with women of power in the classical music field, and who aren’t afraid to use their power and influence to take others who oppose them down in some way. They also express their dominance in other methods, but not the same ways. They also have… let’s just say relationships with certain students of theirs, and both their tendencies, behaviors, and pasts lead them down paths that are ultimately destructive to themselves and those around them. At least that’s how I viewed this.

I felt that comparison too. I love both films and it's interesting how both of them feature really extraordinary, transcendent performances from a main female actress.

I saw this a few weeks back and for a film that long, there is so much to take in thats in between in the lines about Tar and what kind of person she really is. It doesnt so much tell you, but rather just show you and have you make up your own mind about it. I dont want to get into too much here, but for like the first two acts of the film, it felt like it was going to be building up towards something that we felt all knew was coming. But then thinking back on it, the hidden clues were all there and it felt...off. We as the audience felt betrayed when it played out differently and I absolutely loved that when it just went in a different direction with that specific scene.

The performance Blanchett gives is obviously marvelous. And the Juilliard scene is one of my favorite scenes out of a film this year. However, I kinda wish the movie would’ve been like an hour shorter - I like that they swung for the fences and tried to cover every aspect of her life but some of the scenes just went on way too long for me.

I agree. I thought it was an extraordinary film, but it was way too long and did not succeed in all its attempts to address issues. I do think Cate Blanchett gave one of the greatest performances of all time. It's worth seeing for her magnificent performance.

I wish I could have seen in the theater, but it only played for about two weeks with daytime-only showings. I've watched it streaming and didn't fully appreciate it the first showing--much for the reasons that were mentioned in this video of inside baseball talk--but grew to really enjoy it in the second and third watch. I too wish it was a bit shorter, but it was worth the investment of time. To think that Cate Blanchett went from The Gift to this is amazing!

If Tar were a real person and she were interviewed by the actual Adam Gopnik, that would make this a documentary, not a biopic. Also, Tar is presented essentially as a CONDUCTOR, not a composer, even if the character does happen to compose as well. She is also an ethnomusicologist; but both those professional involvements are subordinate in her current career as conductor, clearly her main professional identity.

I am not joking when I say this. I googled the title Tar and yeah it’s fictional. How a director like Field is able to blur the lines so well is beyond me but I’m all for supporting lesser known talent. I’ll watch it when the chance arrives.

I hadn't thought much of the name, tbh, but both you and Kermode have highlighted it. Now that I think about it, I guess just using her surname is a way to place her alongside other iconic names of classical music - Beethoven, Bach, Bernstein, etc. This adds a bit more to the theme on questioning our idolisation/worship of these names as we witness Tar as a flawed individual.
