Recently I was in Huntsville, Alabama and had the pleasure of spending a little time with Yappy Beeman from KZfaq and two other friends, Thad Strippling and Steve Payne. We were out on NASA property where approximately ten honey bee colonies are kept by Mr. Strippling. Yappy dropped in to see me with a surprise inspection day planned at Marshall Space Flight Center. Thad, who ushered us in and who owns the bees, had previously stopped in and met with me in my home town when he was passing through Mississippi about a year ago. Since I was a guest in Yappy's back yard he's the one who lined everything up.
Our other guest, Steve, was an old high school mate of mine and my wife's who now lives and works in Huntsville. Funny thing is I only just met him at my wife's thirty year high school reunion. We went to a big school and somehow we never met. He and his wife have been spending time with us and showing hospitality to my wife and I while we're in the area.
My schedule caused Yappy and myself to be really pressed for time in trying to put something fun together for y'all but we had a great time none the less and I hope you'll enjoy what little we were able to record. We did 3/4 inspections on some really nice healthy colonies, we clowned, we got stung and we had a good time. The tight time frame didn't allow for as much video as we would have liked but I'm sharing what we got.
The bees were out away from civilization and we were not really aware of what was going on in the world around us until we were trying to leave. We all knew weather was coming but when we got out to the highway we realized that NASA was being evacuated due to the threat of bad weather including tornadoes. We had a heck of a time getting past traffic going the wrong direction to get to the exit we needed to be at. I somehow miraculously made it to my destination only five minutes late.
The blunt end to this video was not planned that way. It was initially about ten seconds. longer with the rest of that time lapse. It takes so long to finalize and reupload that I decided to just present it as-is. Enjoy
Music is from Epidemic Sound

Ah the "about to swarm hive". I have the knack for coming in the day cells are capped and finding the queen in the runny mess. They run a queen around to slim her down then she flies. I split it all up into queen castles and call it a win.

Hey rooster!! Love ur channel! I have been keeping bees as a hobby since the late 70s. I have to fight varroa like crazy but up here we never see hive beetles. U think it’s because of our much colder climate. I see you guys fighting beetles but don’t worry about varroa too much. Just the opposite here. Wondering ur thoughts on that? I live in northern Indiana. Also,, you are so lucky to have all those bees. I have not had a swarm call in 7 years. No “wild bees” here anymore, none...

It's good and bad, mostly bad because queen cells means that they are going to get rid of the queen, either swarming or just dispatch or her

OK this is a serious question. It sounds like a joke but its not. Why don't beekeepers paint the interior of the hive body? I have seen top covers stained. I have seen the outside painted every color available at the local home and hobby store. I have seen bees walking all over painted wood surfaces. Never inside hive bodies though. It sure is fun to watch you boys out having fun and messing with the six legged ladies! lol

There's not supposed to be anything inside the hive that is not food grade or approved for use inside of a hive due to the fact the honey is typically going to be used for human consumption. That includes paint. There are approved paints but the boxes don't rot from the inside with all the wax and propolis so there's really no need anyway.

Moister inside the hive will condensate on a painted or non-porous surface especially if the inside environment is warmer and has more moister than the outside cooler air.....Ventilation is just a must. Moister can condensate and those drops can trip on bees inside the hive and could kill bees including the queen. It will also promote mold. That is why many bee keepers are tilting the hives forward toward the entrance so the water can drain out the entrance, just in case water gets inside the hive. A unpainted surface can absorb moister, while a painted surface may condensate that water vapor. Those plastic or wax coated EZ nuc boxes are very prone to collect water in them.

So not such an easy answer, there are several very good reasons. Thank you for explaining it.

One more thing, I forgot. Many, like me, paint the solid bottom boards, so it does not absorb water and to seal cracks to prevent small creatures to enter.. Just tilt the hive forward a little bit, and that water will run/drain out the entrance slot. A solid painted bottom board is also easy to clean if needed, or to do slide a card board inside the entrance to do a mite count which I do when I do a treatment. Some use screened bottom board which some keepers belief brings more moister inside the hive especially if the hive is closer to the ground.

What kind of beetle traps are you using and do use oil with them?
@628DirtRooster
@628DirtRooster 5 жыл бұрын
I use swiffer sheets, and I have some top bar hanger traps that take oil. I prefer oil tray bottoms but maintaining as many of those as I need is a chore. Mostly I make sure the hives stay strong and they'll keep the beetles at bay themselves.
