Vegans are often called out for "cheating." But I'm a vegan with a less-than-perfect track record, and that lifestyle change has probably resulted in something like a 98% reduction in my consumption of animal products. We should celebrate improvements rather than demanding perfection.

Tbh my solution was just to stop using the label "vegan" and just use plant-based instead. Veganism is more like a religion than it is a diet, so people are pretty strict about who gets to call themselves a vegan. Instead of trying to fight it I just go around it.

VERY IMPORTANT NOTE TO ALL NERDFIGHTERS: Don’t make your friends and family feel like bad, evil people for eating beef. Don’t make it out like they’re destroying the world by continuing to eat beef. This approach will only make them more averse to a reduced-beef lifestyle. Instead, do the same thing John is doing in this video. Mention the downsides of beef production and how you’re making some changes in your own life. Don’t force them to do the same. Let your actions inspire them to come to the decision on their own.
@barmiro

While I won't promote being militant, be prepared for this approach not making even the tiniest bit of difference. Family holidays have consisted of mostly ridicule since I'd stopped eating meat, got even worse when I went vegan. I'm sorry to burst your bubble, nobody's getting inspired. Like with basically every aspect of climate change: too little, too late. Kind of disappointed we're still having this discussion, and don't even bother mentioning the fact that (warning: deranged woke vegan propaganda incoming) what you're eating isn't "beef", it's cows. Living, breathing, thinking cows. If we as a society can keep that part abstracted away into the vague concept of "food production", statistical data about climate change isn't going to convince anyone.

@@barmiroI was a vegetarian for three years. (Stopped bc health reasons). During family holidays, the amount of times people made fun of me for being a eco freak was insane. (I live in California, so it’s not like I’m surrounded by rednecked patriots). Never made it anyone else’s problem. Always said “I’m vegetarian, but I’m not offended by you eating in front of me”. But people still only saw me as the weird vegetarian who you couldn’t take out to do meat related activities. This attitude towards vegetarians really bothered me. Basically, yeah man. Totally agree with you. There is no reason to be eating the amount of meat Americans statistically do. It’s sickening how this was normalized and now it’s laughed at to take active steps to reduce your climate impact.

@@barmiroI'm sorry that was your experience and I don't want to downplay it, but I want to share what I've observed with friends and family who have gone vegan. As they've learned to cook vegan food, brought their dishes to potlucks, hosted events dinners, etc. they've demystified veganism for lots of people in our orbit and made it both less intimidating and more appealing. I've heard people make fun of them, but I've also heard people say "I can't believe there's not meat in that! Can you send me the recipe?". The people who will make fun of veganism won't be swayed by guilt or shame any more than by "inspiration". But when good-faith people see their friends sharing something they care about, there is room for learning and growth even if that doesn't lead them all the way down the same path. And the more people on the path, the more it feels accessible, the more options there are, and the more social norms do shift. I've heard friends I NEVER expected say "I've started doing vegetarian dinner twice a week," and that present progress is better than a hypothetical perfection (that isn't coming).

I've tried both ways (the militant way when I was younger). Attacking or shaming people actively hurts the chances of people around you trying it. If you're chill about it, it at least won't hurt. Changing your habits is very hard-expecting to change someone else's is a huge long shot. But you never know if you're kind/willing to have an open and calm conversation about it. DFBTA

There is also an element of norms on the agricultural producer side. I’m a farmer that farms in an area the produces way too much irrigated corn and alfalfa in an area with limited water resources. The reason we grow so much corn and alfalfa is because there are three major markets in the area: feedlots, hogs, and ethanol. I’ve floated the idea of incentivizing the switch of about half of everyone’s acres to crops such as edible beans and irrigated wheat (as well as introducing perennial grains like Kernza) in order to reduce water usage (by about 1/3 to 1/2, depending, in conjunction with pooling resources to build edible bean processing facilities or bread mills, which would bring jobs to an area on the cusp of decline. The state could incentivize the project by committing to buying their public supplies of beans and bread for hospitals, etc, which would reduce food miles. Everyone I’ve spoken to thinks it’s a good idea. Don’t run out of water, revitalize the area, etc. The problem is that everyone is stuck in their norms. Growing corn is relatively easy. We know the markets, we know cattle, we know the crops. On the regulation side, the norm of fighting over water has been entrenched for decades, a push-pull of will they or won’t they shut off wells. We’re so used to it, that no one wants to break the mold. On top of that, every incentive currently points back to the default. So in addition to the question of how do we change consumer norms, I’m very interested in how we change industry and producer norms when everyone that could potentially cause the wind to blow a different direction is invested in maintaining status quo.

We didn't agree to just buy pickup trucks and SUVs. It was a policy shift caused by the 2009 light truck loophole which explicitly were left out emissions requirements, leading car manufacturers to try and sell the easier to produce (and less regulated) light trucks
@stevenhaas9622
@stevenhaas9622 Ай бұрын
this is not really true though. The biggest cause of the shift has been in consumer demand for SUVs. Even in the UK and the EU with completely different regulatory frameworks SUVs, which were virtually unheard of 15 years ago are now becoming ubiquitous.

Oh hey, a trick I already do! Since I'm Jewish my Beef Days have been Passover and Rosh Hashana for the past few years. And it also means I can monetarily splurge on making sure the beef i do get is as sustainably and humanely farmed as possible. I like the Spring and Fall timing, coordinated with the beautiful change of the seasons, but for a Nerdfighteria focused beef day I feel like some options could be: 1) September 3: the day of Alexander Fleming's chance observation of penicillin, kick-starting the age of modern antibiotics and saving countless lives 2) May 14: the day Edward Jenner tested the first modern vaccination against Smallpox. And of course the connection of vaccination with cows makes this one especially good. Great video as usual! And happy future beef days to you! ❤

I don't follow any paticular tradition but I do go to wheel of the year wicca-ish rituals, so the solstices and equinoxes are already present in my brain as noteable dates. I try to change up my bedside table/pseudo-altar when the seasons change as a way to keep a little more aware of time passing, having a feast day on that would be another nice way to mark the season changing. I don't do that decoration change on solstice/equinox though, as I live in Georgia (usa) and the season changes do not align with the sun chart that way. I try to do it when I notice the weather changing in a new direction - this does mean the summer is up the longest and the winter the shortest but I like actually following the seasons as they are felt more than the calendars dication.

Great video! I want to make a note about 1:36, which is that the SUV and truck problem is not exclusively a problem of social norms. It is also a regulatory problem. The free market is not solely responsible for the market preference for SUVs and trucks, because that market is not actually "free" from regulatory influence. "Light Trucks" are a category of vehicle that is exempted from some US emissions and safety standards. So auto manufacturers modified vehicle designs to qualify as "light trucks", marketed them aggressively, and removed their smaller vehicle options from the market. SUVs and pickups qualify as light trucks. The market demand for these products is mostly manufactured by car companies in response to poorly crafted government regulations.

gradually reducing meat also gives people time to try new recipes and find things they like. i feel strongly that a big part of the reason people in the US have a "meat with every meal" habit is just that, a habit. you have a bunch of go-to recipes when you dont know what to eat and dont have the energy to look up something new, an they are all meat-focused, so you end up eating meat because other options arent at the front of your mind.

Love this idea! I'm a vegetarian/mostly vegan. A lot of people tell me the barrier for being vegetarian/vegan would be missing certain foods too much, or not being able to enjoy cultural or family foods. But sometimes perfect is the enemy of good, and just significantly reducing meat consumption would be a huge win. And those meat foods would be all the more special when you do have them.

Somebody lied to me about the cheese content of the food they were giving me after I had been a vegan for five years. I could tell immediately, it was disgusting and tasted rancid. I have made properly fermented plant cheeses since then and they are wonderful, all funk but no off-flavours. I think some people may have the same reaction to beef after not having it for months.

As someone who loves, lives with, and cooks for someone who cannot eat most of the common/available non-meat protein sources (can't eat beans, legumes, soy, etc) I love how this video is an invitation to join in a new social norm, without vilifying those that can't. Not everyone can or should go vegetarian for health reasons. But for those that can, or even just those that want to swap to better meat sources for the environment, I hope y'all enjoy your Beef Days.

Yes, I feel the same. I'm someone who doesn't tolerate plants, and I don't even feel my best if I eat too much chicken or pork. The vast majority of my diet is beef and eggs, with some chicken, pork, and fish here and there. I can tolerate some spices here and there, and save them for when I eat chicken or pork. Beef tastes great with just salt, but chicken and pork need something more. I can also tolerate a small amount of low carb vegetables every once in a great while, but if I eat them with any regularity I start getting a return of symptoms. And high carb vegetables, legumes, grains, nuts, etc are just completely off the menu. I'll get a return of symptoms with just one serving. So yeah, I can't join in on this and I try and find other ways to reduce my carbon footprint. And I do appreciate that he's not vilifying people who don't take part in this.

Thank you so so much for talking about this! It’s so important to make it clear that there are options that have a massive impact without converting fully to a plant based diet. I stopped eating beef 10 years ago after first learning about the environmental impact (and how cows are treated generally) and I reduced my pork consumption to twice a month. I’ve been able to convince three family members to do the same or similar since it seems so much less intimidating than eating no meat ever.

I was a Research Technician at my Alma mater doing nutrient and waste management research at our college farm. I worked with dairy manure and greenhouse gas emissions. I am unfortunately familiar with the sometimes soul-crushing data. But! Modern science can do so much for modern agriculture to improve environmental impacts. It’s just that many family farmers can’t afford some or many of the advancements. I wholeheartedly support the idea of Beef Days, and I highly encourage sourcing your beef from a local farmers market or meat market. It can could be more expensive than corporately farmed meat in super markets, but it can make the world of a difference in the small-scale agro-economy and agro-ecology.

I'm a Greek Orthodox Christian, and we have a deeply-embedded tradition of feast and fast days like you are beginning to practice! We are supposed to abstain from meat, fish, dairy, eggs, wine, and olive oil on Wednesdays and Fridays throughout the year, plus the 40/50 days surrounding Great Lent, and three other fast periods throughout the year. If you add is all up, about half the year is essentially vegan for Orthodox Christians that follow all the prescribed fasting practices. But the idea of feasting is the integral flip side of the coin. We can't wallow in dourness. Human existence relies on a measure of revelry and gusto for life. And food is a part of that, too. I hope you find some great days to celebrate Beef Days with your family.

This is a great idea, but remember that while beef can be produced "more" sustainably, e.g. by using land responsibly, it can never actually be sustainable, just due to the laws of physics and the sheer amount of calories needed to raise a cow. Cattle require a lot of water to sustain. Where is that coming from on that “hot arid land”? Maybe drawing from aquifers that aren’t being refilled? Not all land needs to be “productive”. It can just be left to be wild and exist for itself, rather than for human gain. A plant-based diet is so much more land efficient, as John says, so we can afford to just let the land be. Cattle in Australia is a recent, colonial phenomenon. It can be undone.

The 27th of June is Helen Keller's birthday. Keller was a tireless advocate for the rights of disabled people, women, the poor, and people of colour. She was a radical socialist, a pacifist, and an early supporter of birth control. She had an extensive career of political activism, speaking, and writing. Yet all most people know about her is the story of her childhood teacher and the water pump. She is remembered as a petulant 8 year old with a long suffering caregiver, rather than the strong uncomprimising woman she grew into - infantalized like so many disabled people before and after her. Keller would have surely been a booster for P4A. In a response to a newspaper that had previously lavished praise on her only to renounce her when her socialist views became known she wrote: "Oh, ridiculous Brooklyn Eagle! Socially blind and deaf, it defends an intolerable system, a system that is the cause of much of the physical blindness and deafness which we are trying to prevent." I propose a feast day in her honour, dedicated not only to her memory but also as a yearly reminder of all the voices that have been supressed or forgotten.

I also want to give credit to my vegetarian coworker who taught me it doesn't have to be all or nothing. She has meat maybe once a year on special occasions, and she doesn't see it as a failure. I have been doing feast days as a dieting technique for nearly 15 years now! It's amazing how your desires around food can be warped by availability. At first you will notice how much beef constantly surrounds you. After a few years you will be so entrenched in your annual routine that when "Beef Day" comes you may not even be craving beef, or worse it may sound unappetizing! But you know if you are to stick to the routine then the beef is now or never, so you eat it anyway and then your stomach hurts and before long you're associating the beef with the stomach ache and suddenly you're negotiating down to 1 or 2 beef days a year. I wish you luck and to any who are inspired to do the same, good luck!

And it's about time an academic and a scientist copped onto that 🎉🎉🎉

We stopped cooking beef at home a few years ago, though we still have burgers sometimes when eating out. Not formal beef days, but still fairly rare, like when on a road trip to take the kids to or from college.

A friend of mine gave up eating "cute animals with faces" a couple years ago, and I think her doing that made me aware that I was similarly uncomfortable with eating animals at the volume I was. I gave up beef (I really like cows) almost 2 years ago and I have been really happy with that decision. I'm actually working to reduce my pork intake to eventually give that up as well. Doing it gradually, animal to animal, has really helped acclimate both myself and my friends/family to this choice.

What works really well is your doctor telling you stop the red meat thing now. That worked for me. Apparently all these large animal meats have an equally large amount of super bad cholesterol in them. (who knew? LOL) Anyway beef was easy, pork took some time. I craved that. More power to you :)

I've been a near-vegetarian for six or seven years and I started in a similar way! I realized one day in my teens that pigs aren't very different from dogs, and I feel like a MONSTER when I accidentally kick my dog. Therefore, why am I okay with slaughtering and eating pigs? Since then, I've taken on a more environmental perspective in addition, and I'd be thrilled if everyone in the world would just cut down their beef intake even if they changed nothing else.

honestly, valid. I'm vegetarian today but I started off just ruling out lamb because "lambs are cute", then moved to pescatarian bc I didn't feel an emotional connection to fish until eventually going full veggie. Every choice counts! ❤❤

As a decade-long vegetarian and year long vegan, one book that really helped me change my habits was 'eating animals' by Jonathan Safran Foer'. It's this amazing book that doesn't aim at turning everybody into a vegetarian/vegan, but rather explores what it means for us as a society to continue to eat, kill and torture animals for our personal pleasure. I think it is really important to know what is happening in animal product industries, so we can make informed decisions about the world we want to live in and this is a great book for that, that feels a lot like this video. Good luck to everyone trying to reduce their consumption of beef or any other animal product!!

I've been mostly vegetarian for about 4 years now. I won't shy away from meat when I go out to eat at a restaurant, or if someone is cooking for me, but at home we very rarely make anything with meat in it. This was a sustainable balance I happily manage. It massively reduces the meat I consume which I'm happy about.

One of the myriad reasons as to why I gave up eating animals all together. My father, however, committed to one steak a month 30 years ago; and that helps as well.

Thanks for trying to shift social norms without shame or blame! I was vegetarian or pescatarian for 5 years but now eat more meat than ever while pregnant/nursing. Trying to remind myself there is a phase for everything :) Right now need to prioritize growing a human and will probably need less meat when I am done. I love that churches have exceptions to fasting rules for children or medical reasons and it's good to keep in mind at the initiation of Beef Days :)

A friend introduced me to “Meatless Mondays” which seems like a good baby step. I love eating meat, but know how bad it is for the environment. It’s by no means ‘enough’ change, but changing my behavior one small step at a time feels good

I've always wondered about this, but if you have Meatless Mondays, does that mean you're eating meat the other 6 days? how does one afford that much meat? or are the meat portions really small?

Thanks for mentioning this today. I’ve been pretty depressed lately. Being vegan for the last 21 years hasn’t been hard but the people hating on my dietary choices and making fun has been taxing. My dream is to wake up someday on a planet where most people eat mostly plants.

I don't think I'd do well on a vegan diet, but I appreciate that you're trying to make a difference! Once I'm in a better position to, I want to basically eliminate beef from my diet and eat less meat in general, with the meat I'm eating limited to chicken and pork that has been raised as humanely as possible.

Thank you for this video, John!! Reducing beef consumption is one of the most important steps needed to hold to 1.5 degrees, but it's notoriously difficult to achieve, because many people get very defensive about any suggestions to modify their diets. I love the fun, no-shaming way you're encouraging change in this lovely community!

just some dates I think would be interesting considerations for beef days: - founding date of Partners in Health - first vlogbrothers video upload date - birthday of Emmy Noether one of the most influential mathematicians ever whom also happened to be a woman. - Ending of Apartheit in South Africa - First publication of Robert Koch's work on a TB cure

List for potential beef days: Beef day #1: July 5th: America Day, good reason to beef day Beef day #2: October 31st: Christmas has pork, Thanksgiving has turkey, Easter has anthropomorphic rabbits, we should create a new norm for Beef on Halloween. Beef day #3: Someone said October 18th for "None-pizza-with-left-beef" good meme, good reason. Beef day #4: The first time you go out for a sporting event with friends and family; good beef day. Beef day #5: Hank polls Nerdfighteria to designate a single Beef Day; a day we all celebrate and consume beef together as a community. We celebrates "squashing beef" with those we argue with, and incorporate many puns,. Then we raise money for charity and stuff.

In Denmark, every year in mid april we celebrate "organic day", when the organic cows are released on to the pastures, where they have to stay during summer. The cows are so happy, they run and jump, it's quite a nice thing to see. Many organic farms are open to the public, so people can bring their city kids to see how their food is made. I think that would be a good date for a beef day. This year it was april 14th.

I love this idea so much! I have definitely fallen into the trap of making others feel villanised for eating meat, but the way that Beef Days is framed, we are celebrating something precious and therefore only on sacred days :)
