So sorry to hear about your situation!! Heartbreaking to lose so many families. Here in South West Canada (near Vancouver) we are saddened to see absolutely no honeybees on our flowers. It is warm and sunny; we usually have mobs of them. This year, no. We did some research on the effect of EMF on insects and found a very good research paper. It is long and full of technical language; the upshot is that higher frequencies in the spectrum 'resonate' with small insects and could change behaviour. Another study I read showed that EMF changed the 'sound' the bees made.

Yeah, last year was my first year raising bees. I was heartbroken to find I lost them all. It's hard for me to not kick myself for doing something wrong. It's weird how attached we can become to these little ones.

How much honey did they leave behind? I lost my queen this spring. I had pollen going in in April but when I inspected in May there was no queen. I just installed a Saskatraz queen but only have two frames of bees left in a NUC. I'm building a Layens Hive with thick insulation and hope to catch a swarm this spring. I took the syrup off today because they had no interest in it. You just solved my problem with those jars. I was using screen too but they could not reach the syrup. I see that you push the top of the lid up a little so it is closer to the screen.
@AnnaKra
@AnnaKra 4 жыл бұрын
The ones that flew away didn't leave much of anything. I'm sorry to hear about your queen. I hope everything works out for you! Yeah, we push the top of the lid out, we explain that in more detail in another video "Start a decent beehive for dirt cheap" Part 2. Thank you for watching! :)

Is this only the second winter since you guys changed to treatment free? If so, it is normal to have high losses at this time due to parasitic mite syndrome. If you build up again with the bees that survived the winter they should be more resistant in future.
@AnnaKra
@AnnaKra 4 жыл бұрын
It is not due to varroa mites, as explained in the video. No dead bees on the bottom of the hives. We treated our bees exactly the same on our other property and they did just fine. We still treat our bees for varroa mites just not with chemicals. Thanks for watching!

Anna, could you please ask your dad what he recommends for my family with no queen. I only have one hive, and there is no queen. I checked today for brood, larvae, eggs, but there isn't anything. I still have bees, but no queen. I saw one of our videos on how to save a queen less hive, but I don't have a second hive to work with. Ask him if I should buy a queen, and how long with this hive survive with no queen
@AnnaKra
@AnnaKra 4 жыл бұрын
Without a queen they usually can still survive for about a month, after that it can be difficult to fix. I would either put frames with brood if the queen just disappeared or if its been a while your best hope is buying a queen ASAP. I would look on craigslist if they have local queens so that you don't have to wait. Even if you have to wait few days it may still be very well worth getting one. Also, Where are you located again? Maybe you can get a queen from us.

Hello, this is my first year with bees so I'm not sure what to do.. about three weeks ago I installed a package of bees,.today I lefties the inner cover and they are making comb under it.shout I scrape it off and let them start over or leave them alone? Thank you.jenny
@AnnaKra
@AnnaKra 4 жыл бұрын
Scrape it off, do you have frames with wax inside the hive? Make sure you put frames with wax inside, even one strip of wax should work, so that they can start building comb on the frames instead! I hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
@AnnaKra
@AnnaKra 4 жыл бұрын
Also, if it's a 10 frame box, make sure all ten frames are in, so that they don't build around it.

Anna, your dad seemed to be very sad about losing his bee families. I am sad for him too. I hope his bees recover. I pay more attention to your dads information, than any other videos on KZfaq. I have been giving my bees some sugar syrup, but I think I should stop as there is lots of flowers where I live. Ask your dad if thats a good idea and please let me know.
@AnnaKra

Thank you. That is a great idea, especially if you have lots of flowers! Sometimes we feed our bees in the beginning of march if the family looks weak to give it a nice start.

Anna, could you ask your day if I could rotate my hive so the entrance is not facing the sun all day. Is that something that I can do in the late evening when the bees are inside, or can I do it during the day. Will the bees give the information to the other bees, that I turned the hive around.
