Encamped and making lubricant comprised of bees wax and tallow (Crisco lard) for Civil War era revolver felt wads and minne balls over the wood stove. Mixture is about 1 parts bees wax to 1.5 parts tallow (lard)

Project Time: Making felt wads for the.44 cal black powder revolvers. Anyone else make their own or have recommendations?

Correct Sir - busy around camp - this project was "interrupted" a few times by the 1 Sargent calling the company to attention for drill. We resumed project work afterwards.

I use wine corks. Cut em for thickness and use a sharpened bullet casing as a punch on a scrap piece of cedar. Just a taper inside and out on the casing. Low powder and theyre cork bullets. Great for using shot for snakes or whatever

Time correct done with felt cloth - I also cut wads from wax boiled cardboard strips. The leftovers are great for fire starting.

Olive oil and beeswax with some wintergreen essential oil and you have Bore Butter. Your formula works very well too. I've used it for patch lube, chamber mouth sealant, stock and metal protectant.

Olive oil will go rancid after 3 months from being heated, its not really worth it.

Of course, pork fat has a much lower melting point than tallow, so your wads will be softer, but the lube "runnier" when barrels get hot
@1stminnsharpshooters3412 жыл бұрын
thanks for the tip, I was not aware of that!
@denisdegamon8224 Жыл бұрын
Careful, pork fat has alot of salt, not good for black powder guns. Use only rendered lard. Lambs tallow is the best.

LAMB'S TALLOW FROM DIXIE GUN WORKS. Lamb's tallow don't go rancid! Your patches will work but there are easier ways.

Thanks Hamm 603 for the pointers. Before I purchase tallow I'm going to see if I can find a farmer with lamb that butchers - this make take a while but would be meaningfully to get it locally.

Could u waterproof leather with this?
@1stminnsharpshooters341 Жыл бұрын
Great question pard. I have not done this but was wondering the same with my leather boots. I the answer is YES this does work and has been historically used. Here's a clip from a quick google search "Thus once applied it is not only waterproof but also extremely durable. Beeswax provides just enough lubrication to prevent hardening of leather in typical use"
