BEFORE you adjust your mowing deck because your mower is cutting your grass uneven or creating a step cut, check out these quick and easy tips first.
Step cutting is when you cut the lawn and it leaves ridges on the lawn surface creating an uneven look. Uneven lawns can be caused by many things such as deck or blade damage or the need to be re-leveled. Check out this video first before you start re-leveling your mower deck (or blade housing).

you put up a lot of good useful info. being in the trade, i'm surprised it's not hurting buisness. i do my own stuff and rarely do i need to look for help but there are many out there that no doubt do. for them i thank you. i do have a problem though. i'm fixing an old john deere 185 up. i've looked around everywhere for some direction on the double pulley on the deck. the bearings are toast. i can't find a clip or pin on it. the new part clearly has a pin hole though. i've beat that thing to death, heated it up and beat it some more. it's pressed in i've read but i've also seen a hammer knock valve guides loose that the press at work wouldn't. it's rusted pretty bad but has been cleaned up. if there something i'm over looking?

The difference in mowing height due to a low tire is even more when you add in the person's weight sitting on the mower. Also I recently installed 2 new front tires, and my front deck height went up about a half inch due to the new front tire tread. Important to check these things!

i went out and bought a welder to fix the rust in an old john deere deck (1st time welding btw). i'm trying to save it from the scrap pile and my old craftsman is about to give out. the deere was a feebie so i can justify some time and money on it. had it for a few years, most of that time it's been parked and on the "list". anyway brakes were bad and the thing that annoyed me more than anything was the transmission release valve. it couldn't be rolled but scooted. i spend a couple hours messing with that just so i can hopefully never use it lol.

Excellent video. A lot of people would never think to check these two basic items. Tyre pressure is something I always check before using my ride on mower. Here is Sydney, Australia we have John Deere too and the particular model I have is the Sabre branded one. It is equivalent to the LT110. It has the kholer engine 17.5hp. I've had it since 2001 and it's still going strong with all the usual maintenance carried out of course.

I replaced the spindles, and installed new blades awhile back. Not such a hard job, a pain in the butt one for me. Getting too old. Started the rider and engaged the blades and low and behiold the belt broke. I thought not this time, I'd rather pay someone else to put a new one on. It also needed some electrical work done too. I had noticed the tires were a little low on pressure, so I aired them up. After mowing last week, I thought that the yard had never looked better. Never gave a thought about under inflated tires. It does make a huge difference. After watching this video, I now understand. That is the best tip I had ever seen. I watch videos for self help and have never seen anyone else cover this topic. By the way Steve, I'll stick with Miller Light. Unlike you and my two brothers, I'm a one beer man. Have a great day!

I love your videos, they are easy to understand, helpful and thorough! Thanks a lot! Low tire pressure is like an appliance repair friend of mine said, he "fixes" many appliances by plugging them back in or resetting the circuit breaker. Everyone should check the tire pressure with a good guage every time they get out the mower to cut the grass, make it a habit, check the oil, fuel, and tire pressure before you crank it up. It's way too late when you see the problem in the cut grass.

Crazy thing happened to me. I have an 20 year MTD tractor and the 4 arms that attach the deck to the frame one came free the pin came off. That side of the deck would not lower. I could only cut on the highest level. Found that the arm was pinched between the part of the frame it hangs on and the frame it self. Not sure how long it was like that but it cuts a lot better. The whole deck was off which caused suction problems as well. What now brought me to the video is a leaking needle and seat. Tried starting it wouldn't kick over. Finally got it to but smoked like crazy. Didnt run long. Hopefully no damage. But I'm in the process of fixing the old girl. Hope shes ok. Was a hand me down from my grandfather. Thanks for your videos. You are fantastic!

Been having trouble with my old lawn tractor. Evened up the tire pressures and it's cutting great! Had to lower the deck 2 notches to get the right cut height again. If my car was pulling right or left I'd check air pressure in my tires, I just never would've thought this would make this much difference on how a mower cuts. Thanks for the tips and information.

I definitely didn't think you were crazy for saying tire pressure because that was actually my first guess. Why? Because I learned the hard way a few months back. My lawn tractor was cutting unevenly, so I looked up a tutorial on how to adjust the deck on my model of lawn tractor. Once I had finished leveling it only then did I notice that one of the back tires didn't look quite right. Once it had the proper amount of air again I had to turn around and then relevel the deck back to the way it was. You live and you learn.

Another great video Steve. Who would have thought. Sometimes, something as simple as having the correct tire pressure can be an easy solution to an uneven cut!

Great info. I always checked tire pressure first but I have noticed that blades are not even. Looking forward to your video on the spindles because all blades are new and seated flat with factory spacers.

What should be the distance between blades? At what angle should blades be position to each other? How to determine the quality of blades? Adding these concerns may improve our issues with grass cuttings. Great videos. I am a subscriber.

Great hints and tips Steve. I watch your channel a lot. I also have the same equipment funny enough. I’m super impressed with my ridem mower. I have a Waren Blade for it 56” I have a 120 John Deere, and it handles the snow like a champ. I plow my neighbours drive and mine because they are joined. They are both very steep, but it pushes it up hill like its not even there. I put chains and weights on it, plus I sniped the treads for more grip. ( mostly for the grass, but I’m sure it helps in the snow as well) I’m in love with it. As a bonus I threw on a Aooga horn. 😂 Thanks so much for your help Steve. Love your channel.

Oh my God let me just tell you I got a craftsman riding lawnmower from a friend‘s grandfather who’s only used it twice and I could not for the life of me figure out why it was cutting uneven the blades matched up and everything and I was like before I go and start taking things apart let me look on KZfaq this was the first video I went to as soon as you said tire pressure I measured the bottom sure enough it was off by over half an inch and the side that was low was low by over half the psi but I never noticed it. Now it cuts evenly thank you! You have a new subscriber

Great videos. Here is a video idea. A demo on connecting all the hoses correctly any 2stroke equipment with a primer bulb. You have several hoses to connect correctly, do it wrong and it won't start.

I learned the hard way about tire pressure. If the front right tire pressure is low, the right side of the deck will be low AND the left side of the deck will be higher. Yes, all manual gauges are most accurate in the center of their range and 5 psi is that one's lowest. Digital gauges might be most accurate at center scale, too. I like a round air pressure gauge with a dial and needle over the pencil kind, but having the best range for the needed pressure is important. Cool on showing blade tips aligning, no matter if 2 or 3. Now I know to check that now because I always check tire pressure before mowing and I'm seeing uneven cuts. And I'll check both tips to both other tips in case one blade is bent on one side. Both spindles are new so it's not that, but I do hit things with the blades now and then. I know about leveling the deck and making sure all 4 tires' pressure are correct first. Glad I watched this one! Thanks, Steve.
