I feel like Ruyi could relate to Concubine Mei in her pitiful situation. She knew the longing of wanting to be with one's precious baby. So she gave a last bit of kindness to Mei.

All she wanted was her son. Everything she did was for her child and her child alone. Her schemes, her motivations, her music, her thoughts and prayers- it was all for him. In the end, she was content with dying, because she knew she would see him... finally, after years of grieving, of scheming, of rumors about her own child...

Ehh, it's dumb to martyrize her like that. She schemed to enter the harem in the first place, on the Empress Dowager's orders. It wasn't 'all for her son' who was nonexistent then. She was also a foolish and arrogant b*tch who went around offending people for no reason. If she was really thinking of her child then, she would've laid low and not made unnecessary enemies. She wasn't some saintly mother who devoted everything to her child.

Concubine Mei is a true mother in spirit. It’s obvious that’s all she really wanted. She thought she’d have the most prosperous life for a baby with the emperor. She reminds me of my mommy’s affection for me. She didn’t care what her baby looked like. I love Concubine Mei.🥰🥲

Poor Mei..seems like it’s just a short while ago when she was the confident, bold, spirited newcomer girl with the ambition to rise to the top with her own effort. Sadly in the end she was just depressive and be content to just die (I think being in the harem has that effect to almost everyone..like embracing death is the only way out from the continuous pains..including Ruyi)

She speaks the truth when she says “the emperor is scary” but it’s not just him. Look at all Jia does to make her clans Lord happy. She loses everything for a man who just used her. And many of them were like that. Either sacrificing themselves for their clan or for the emperor. Ruyi and Hailan stand out because for Hailan she’d sacrifice herself for Ruyi but Hailan was too smart. And Ruyi while she’d also do anything for Hailan, I think Ruyi tried to help anyone who was basically an innocent being abused by someone in power, like how she got Rongpei and the acts she did that made Hailan so loyal but all were done selflessly. Ruyi would even be willing to face the emperors wrath like when Hailan was being made to kneel in the snow by that skank, Ruyi was willing to speak against someone above her in the harem to protect her.

That comment is basically the slap in the face the Emperor needed to wake up and realize what was going on with him and Ryui at the very end. Wei tells him that exact statement: You use everyone for heirs and blah blah and guess what? We do the same. No one here really 'loves you' oh wait. Someone did, that woman you locked up and all that? We all know she really loves you but you treated her like shit so f you.

I don't feel bad for them their ambition to be at the top of a harem was all of their downfalls. He couldn't love 20 women and favorites came and went. Ruyi was the only one who didn't let it change who she was on the inside. She wasn't consumed by hatred and bitterness even after what was done to her by these women.

@@ragu05 I mean it is kind of the truth. No woman enters the palace, gains a title and live to not become even a bit corrupt. Consort Ling gained titles upon titles. Promotion after promotion. She was not even in the main palace for most of her time in the palace. She was mostly with the Empress dowager in Yuanming Garden. So she must of had many tricks to still be loved by Emperor Qianlong to become Imperial Noble Consort. Her son even gained the throne even though the 15th prince was not a legitimate son.

We don't know much about Consort Ling's personality but she must have either been seriously enterprising and cunning or the emperor was very much in love with her. The rate at which she was promoted was virtually unheard-of and the fact that she became the de-facto empress when she was 1) not ethnically Manchu or 2) not from an important or influential clan was insane.

I always wondered If Mei Pin was rude to Gao because of orders of Empress Dowager or if she genuinely was like that. Its sad but Mei Pin knew her end wasn’t gonna be good because she was working for the emperor’s spy. Also it hurts to see Ruyi realizing once again the emperor is not the man she think. You can see the disappointment in her face

Yeah I wished we saw more interactions between Mei and Empress Dowager. We know Empress Dowager hated Hui's father, so in return Dowager secretly poisoned Hui, so I assume Mei was just doing what Dowager was wanting her to do.

Don't forget Mei also tried to frame Ruyi for poisoning the cream she was putting on her face(when Hui slapped her)....it wasn't Ruyi, Mei did it to herself.

I was most sad for her. She really loved the emperor, and he knew she had been genuine with him. But just because they were put in the harem by his Mom as her spy's! Like they were just letting her know what bitches were scheming on him. Letting her know he's in good health. She just cared for him. I get he doesn't like being checked on but Damn. Lol to lie to her to get her to kill another woman so you can be rid of your mother's spy's... Savage!

Chileee watch the drama first 😭 it was because of the scheming and false accusations from other concubines only then did she kill another. The Emperor would never lead someone to kill his first Empress.

Consort Shu was one of the saddest. The emperor kept her from conceiving only because the empress dowager had picked her for his court. She didn't even want to spy for the empress dowager and actually loved him. Once she finally had a child it ended getting sick and dying and she killed herself as a result. Especially when she found out the emperor was tricking her with medicine that wouldn't let her conceive

The Empress Dowager didn't really care about the Emperor, she was just worried about losing power and control over the Emperor and Harem or getting killed by any of them. Also, she was not his birth mother but a foster mom, so it was natural that they both were wary of each other. It was common in royal families in ancient times. Foster moms had to spy on their Emperor sons to safeguard their retirement.

I am still working my way through the series, but Ruyi is THE Empress in my eyes in large part because, while a canny player of the court game, she doesn’t rejoice in anyone’s suffering. Nor does she ignore it if it happens to her ‘inferiors’. There are worse role models.

I have a theory that every woman's death in the harem in this series was carried out in defiance of the Emperor -- all the way up to the highest ranking. In this case, Bai Ruiji doesn't give a single damn about the Emperor anymore, she only cares about being reunited with her unborn child and goes to her fate secure in knowing Ruyi cares enough to make that happen. Really goes to show the difference in sentiment between the "parents of the nation"... It's also interesting to contrast her fate with that of Consort Shu if you've seen that part already. Two women planted by the Empress Dowager, but so different in the nature of their feelings for the Emperor... I feel like you can be happy for Ruiji here in a way that's very hard in Yihuan's case.
