Leah, I just had to let you know that after my husband discovered a leak on our roof at the vent in our bathroom, he was lamenting fixing the ceiling...he's not a handy-man...a real nice guy but just not handy. Fortunately I had seen your drywall patch work videos and told him not to worry, I'd be glad to fix it. After picking his jaw up off the floor, he started asking questions...I could have made it sound like I left my crib as a babe knowing that sort of thing, but alas, I had to give YOU the credit because you are an amazing teacher and you have helped me, my boys and just look at the scads of other folks here that love your teaching videos! Thanks again...I DID IT! Very gratefully. m.m. P.S. I used the drill and wood method.

You make it so easy to understand, thanks. I've noticed that in a lot of videos, they say you have to butt the new piece of drywall with the existing drywall at a stud. It looks like, the way you do it with the scrap wood for a brace that eliminates the need for the new and existing drywall to meet at a stud, meaning I don't have to make as large a hole.
@seejanedrill
@seejanedrill 9 жыл бұрын
GregwGa That's true, depending upon the size of the repair. If you have a very large repair, it's better to go stud to stud, however, it isn't necessary for a small repair, such as the one we show in the video.

Well Leah another great video. Both of those methods get a big tick. There are other ways as well but those two are the best ones. Wet sanding. That, you hardly EVER see anymore. Works great. I love your ambidextrousness. I think you're probably similar to me in that I write left handed but do most things right handed, or just swap over if I get tired. lol.

Leah, thanks for the wonderful video on fixing holes in drywall. It is nice to have a clear and concise explanation for once. I recently bought a home from the 60's and I removed a fireplace that was built with brick but only had an electric log with a light and no heater. So after removing the fireplace, I noticed the strange substrate consisting of 3/8 inch sheetrock covered with 1/2 inch of cement with some metal mesh between the cement and the finished plaster walls. I have about an inch gap to fill so I started skim coating it using the general purpose mud with the black lid. I did it layering 1/8 inch per coat and leaving it to dry a day before going to the next coat. How do I duplicate the texture and what is the best way for joining new drywall to the old style. I have never seen anything quite like this but have never owned an older home. We are also remodeling the kitchen and had a heck of a time removing the bulk head over the cupboards as they were basically made of a 1x8 and a 1x4 similar to a fruit crate before the wall substrate was attached and then the metal, that I call the razor metal, was imbedded in every seam and corner. I need to even out the cieling and the walls. Any suggestions would be most appreciated. Thanks again, Roger
@seejanedrill
@seejanedrill 10 жыл бұрын
Hi Roger, The good news is, you have a very good, quality-built house where the builders didn't cut any corners! The substrate that you are encountering is called gypsum lath, a.k.a. rock lath. What appears to be cement is really base-coat plaster. And what you call the "razor metal" is metal lath. Metal lath in plastered homes is placed in the angles for reinforcement. Angles are where walls meet ceilings or walls meet walls. So, as far as you using joint compound in 1/8" layers, you are doing it the right way. It sounds like you are using Gold Bond (I think, because it comes with a black lid). The thing is, using an air-dry joint compound will take forever. You may want to consider using Easy-Sand 5. It sets up in 5 minutes. It is also, as the name suggests, easy to sand. Now, for what you are encountering, it is difficult to visualize it. So, in order for me to advise you properly, I'm going to need to ask you to send me a picture. I have a good idea of what it might be, but without seeing it, it would be reckless of me to provide specific information. My email address is leah@seejanedrill.com. Regards, Leah

Interesting. The first time I had a hole to patch I had no idea how a pro would do it so I took a two foot square and drew a line above and below the hole and extended it to halfway across the studs. The hole was then square and true without using any measuring device and a small tub of premixed mud along with some mesh tape completed the repair. That's the way I've done it ever since and it's worked well for me. I knew about the first method but the second method looks pretty easy. Thanks Leah.

Just keeping the mixed joint compound in a plastic bag make it stay moist and able to use it longer? The thing I was most afraid of was mixing the joint compound. I watched your last video about that and you made it look so easy so thanks for that too.

the scrap wood was key! I cut a little piece of drywall out to look between my walls and was just going to tape it back in. Then realized it might not stay and was trying to figure out what to do. As always, you make things seem simple to do because you explain so well. I'll watch the rest. Oh I see you have a different way to do it. Better watch the whole way through.

Great idea. Keep on teaching! Keep on reaching! I 'm in the process of remodeling my new/old house via You tube University. Each week I take on new tasks after watching a KZfaq video. I can say in the two years of working on my home I have saved thousands of dollars . Thanks for the archive of insightful videos . Good day.

I'm 31 weeks pregnant and trying to get my home ready for my baby's arrival. Your videos are the best, I've done chaulk around the tub/shower, I bought a new toilet and ready to install, now I need to patch a hole in my wall.

Brilliant video! Thanks for making it. :-) I was wondering how you'd smooth off the plaster. I never thought of using a wet brush or sponge. That's a hundred times better than sanding.

I noticed you didn't use a dimpler for the countersinking. I don't have one but do you recommend one for a drill or impact wrench? Your videos are so clear and thorough like no other? I don't have mud handy, can I use instead premixed quick dry spackling that I am using to fill small holes?

Good video but if you arent going to be floating/texturing the whole wall I always make sure not to overlap the tape on the corners, if im not just doing a hot patch. It just needs to cover the gap so theres no visible crack when the mud dries, and overlapping tape means more height to have to float over.
