No one expected Bodger to jump off an airship, come and learn how that was dealt with, why that happened - and how Bodger almost got written out of NPC D&D

I'm of the opinion that PCs shouldn't get plot armor for stupid actions, or at all, generally-speaking. Now, there's always extenuating circumstances, but running a game for players who know the likelihood of rolling up a new PC is extremely low tends to get annoying, fast.

Kids are extremely random, and it is a pain to keep up. Rob is a true inspiration to DMs. It is actually because of this series that my Enchantress has decided to DM herself, for the first time, for me and strangers she’s met online lol. She even wants to stream it live, so we had to call it something. So we went with Critical Fail 😅 we’ll see how the first session goes next Saturday. Who knows how the whole campaign would turn out if he actually died (even if it just meant respawning in Honeywood but still marking the end of his journey in the campaign).
@hank7281

The rules for fall damage are actually pretty good. Terminal velocity is a thing, and plenty of ordinary people have survived terminal velocity. The acceleration has been largely ignored for simplicity, but you do reach terminal velocity after around 12 seconds. The world record for surviving a fall without a parachute is held by Vesns Vulovic. A bomb exploded on the plane she was in, tearing it apart. She fell 33,330 ft. After a few months in the hospital (nothing a long rest couldn't fix), she was left with a slight limp. 67 rounds of falling didn't kill a flight attendant. Keep in mind that a commoner in D&D has 1d8 hit points. Let's say she rolled an 8, and had an unusually high constitution she built up after all the tiny wines. It would take a lot of tiny wines to get a con score of 16, but hey, that would put her at 11hp. Roll all 1s for the fall damage and she could survive. If anything, the fall damage is skewed to be MORE punishing. The real issue isn't really the fall damage, but how much health the characters get... Side note: people say cats have nine lives because they have long been seen surviving incredible falls. I believe their terminal velocity survival rate is over 90%. The bigger they are, the harder they fall isn't just about the sound they make.

I don't quite follow the mathematics. Terminal velocity for an average human, with an average air resistance coefficient of Earth's atmosphere is, working with some safe assumptions, 450 (±50) feet every six seconds, meaning gravitational acceleration hits terminal velocity at 2 rounds of falling. I mean humans don't continue accelerating past that. And even there, almost all the acceleration happens in those first 6 seconds, with less than 1 foot per second left to reach in those next 6 seconds, because velocity plateaus due to air resistance. In effect, a 500 foot fall is interchangeable for a 10,000 foot fall, in terms of the impact force. Which is survivable if the person can land effectively, and isn't hitting pavement, but _thousands_ of damage wouldn't match the physics. And I mean HP is a weird system anyway, and villagers die if a slight breeze hits 'em funny, so y'know... whatever. But if you want to set your baseline at terminal velocity being almost definitely lethal to even a raging, level-20 barbarian with max natural CON, that would work out to 480 fall damage for an impact at 73.1 ft/s... ... which, accounting for acceleration, would mean a 5 foot drop would necessarily have to deal an average 115 points of bludgeoning damage (if velocity correlates to damage). Because the velocity reached after a 5 foot fall is about 1/4th the velocity of terminal velocity. Because, again, the velocity-time graph of human free-fall has the sharpest acceleration right at the start before plateauing, with diminishing returns of velocity for a longer fall time. The rate of acceleration rapidly declines. Heck, even setting the benchmark at a level 10 barbarian with a 0 CON modifier would mean a 5 foot fall would have to deal 15 points of bludgeoning damage, which is _still_ clearly pretty ridiculous. The real problem is that HP increases in general. It doesn't get _much_ harder for a 500 foot fall to kill a person if they're extra beefy. Personally, I think HP should be replaced with something static, and the odds of hitting/missing be what actually change. So something is still as lethal as it ought to be, if it hits, but the players' characters are more skilled. But basically, any attempt to put realism into D&D physics can't really work effectively. Rules as written are what they are for pretty good reason in the case of fall damage. But also, the fall distance per round is like 350 in the first round and about 450 every consecutive round (which is, I think, why they round to 500 feet). There'd have been way more rounds for Bodger to fall. EDIT: I used omnicalculator's free-fall-air-resistance calculator to do the working out. So I'm trusting that.

Recently got back into watching the series and during this episode I thought for sure Rob was fudging dice for suspense and to possibly teach Rowan a lesson.

This is awesome, I love behind the scenes. Rowan is so chaotic, but Rob's a professional, he's got this 👍

It was brilliant because what was a joke became a real threat for Bodgers life and we can see him understand that gradually :)

HELLS YES. I am HERE for this. Oh man. Like I absolutely adore watching you guys play, it's the highlight of my week (obviously minus the current hiatus) but honestly, I really love hearing all the behind the scenes and stuff that Rob puts into coming up with the story. Thank you so much for the extra content ^_^

Absolutely love this concept! ❤️‍🔥 Brilliant idea, Rob! 🤯🤩It’s so fascinating and equally entertaining to get these insights! It’s especially enjoyable to hear how you might’ve had to tweak the story, or how you’d have addressed the aftermath of a situation like Bodger throwing himself off an airship! 😂 I know you do talk through a lot of this stuff during your recap streams, but as others have noted, much as I’d love to join them all, I’m in the US and need to sleep sometime. 😆 I like this format especially. Fun as the streams are, they’re also kinda chaotic - in a good way - and you really engage with your viewers which is awesome. But, it also makes it more challenging to not get derailed by the chat. 😜 I really, really hope this continues as a regular feature on this channel, ever after the episodes resume! Cannot wait for more!

Great insight into behind the screen Rob. It was a great episode to watch and I had wondered what was going through your head apart from panic when the dice was coming up short. Also brilliant typical impulsive Bodger

Great idea to do the highlights of the D&D BTS and to explain what was going on in the campaign vs. what might have happen. I think it will be very interesting for those who haven't seen the original full BTS videos and still very entertaining for those who have seen them. Personally I love this format (and the nostalgic feeling of going through all the adventures again). It's short, concentrated, very clear, interesting and funny. And Rob is just charming here, even more than ever... :)

I have to be honest, the whole skit where Bodger jumps off the ship had me laughing so much I stopped it like 20 times just to no faint from laughter. I'm being 100% serious when I say I was DYING of laughter.

"...in episode 63, Baradun and the [_] were..." Priceless. Also, if something is specifically mentioned to Rowan, he absolutely will have Bodger interact with it immediately, and forcefully. At this point, it's a rule. See for examples: Dirk's locket, the casino, the cursed axe, the cursed shield, the Aarakocra lifeguard.

Another option idea: Rowan sits out until the airship lands and then uses Bodgers brother.

Rob should do a DM master class series. For real. As an amateur, self taught DM, it would be awesome to have basic lessons from Rob.
