I had to learn English better to understand everything you say=) It's worth it! I'm a big fan of your talent. Next time before writing a story I'll gather my characters and ask them what they would like) And I'll come up with answers for them… I would like to know how often your players' decisions are disappointing? Thank you for your videos!

One thing that I discovered was that even after the campaign begins, it's still possible to tie in players backstories with another as the narrative continues. One of my players doesn't create elaborate backstories, but does like to tell her own tales and gives me permission to determine if it's true or not, and I can use that information to tie characters together. It's good to hear from an experienced DM about how they start their stories though, as it provides useful insight into writing my own as an inexperienced DM. So keep at it Rob!!

I understand your position, and some players need that "control". But I don't care about backstories for my characters. I'm not designing the roller coaster before I ride it. I'm looking to the DM to create the story and lead me. Do I like murder mysteries? Yes. Action and explosions? Yes. Twists and puzzles? Yes. Plot holes? No. Care bears? No. But, yeah, definitely should discuss in session 0 regarding the type of story and I get that some players are only invested if they are coddled and served rather than led. Just lead me and I'll follow. Adventure awaits. I want someone to approach my character screaming "Come with me if you want to live!". I prefer the DM to create the story, situations and events. Being led through a module is great fun too.

Question, how do you create reasons for characters to go on the adventure for shorter-style games like the one-page ones from Grant Howitt or others where you roll the characters at the table instead of in advance? Those characters tend not to have backstories that give reasons for them to go adventuring, so it seems like creating reasons and consequences would be a bit more difficult.
@RobertHartleyGM
@RobertHartleyGM 7 ай бұрын
From the GM's perspective, you mean? How does the GM come up with the incentive to go on the quest for a one shot? Well, for one thing, there should be buy in from all the players that they understand they are there for a single game and need to therefore go on whatever quest the GM sets up, but also, the GM should do their best to get to the point early. Maybe a scene or two of meeting the characters but get them to the quest giver within the first half of Act One. After that, it's really just a case of making the quest important enough that any characters in that situation should go on it, regardless of who they are. And make the incentive/reward for going on the quest as large and tantalising as you need to. Who cares if you give them a 1000gp at the end of a oneshot? It's the end! (Just don't then agree to bringing them back for a surprise part 2!)
@megardyn
@megardyn 7 ай бұрын
oh whoops yes I should have specified my question is about the GM's perspective. I know what things would motivate "me" to go on a quest, but I recognize that not all players are "me" and might not respond to the urgency of the quest giver in the same way. I think your suggestion of a brief scene to get to know the characters would be helpful for handling that, because presumably, the player introducing their character would describe the things their character feels strongly about, and a GM could then take that and drive the quest giver's interactions accordingly.
