I had wasted 16 years of my life believing in it, and I had to waste another 2 years because my parents FORCED me to go, despite me saying I didn’t want to go to church, I didn’t want to do any of the young women’s activities, etc. I was adamant about it, but they didn’t care. They took my phone for a month because they thought my mind was “getting corrupted” and that’s why I didn’t want to go. Still didn’t want to, even without my phone. My friends were so weirded out by Mormonism and my family, I remember the first time I said something about it to them they looked at me with shock. I’m glad for my friends in high school, they were my real support group. When they heard Mormons forbid coffee drinking, they practically carried me to into one of their cars and we all got coffee 😂😂 stuff like that was more meaningful for me than they realized.

It's interesting how many ex-Mormon's, having rejected Mormonism, reject the belief in God. Not that people of other religions have never shared a similar experience as yours, but many have very postive life affirming religious experiences with integrity. Mormonism admittedly is quite disillusioning to a thoughtful person - but in rejecting this organization, ought not close the door for example to the reality of God in Christ which is quite different from the Mormon or the Muslim Jesus, for example.

Momonism seems to want to hide its past rather than come to terms with it and make up for the harm it has done. Same, I'm Christian and in middle school around 85% of the students are Mormons, and have no idea about this stuff! And it pisses me off that great people are going to be completely brainwashed like this!

Richard Holmes - normal people can still be mislead and can mislead others. Mormonism cannot be supported. It becomes laughable and increasingly distorted when it claims perfection and the only true way. It cannot stand up unders questioning.

First, remember that you are 13 and please make sure that you are safe. If leaving the church will cause you to get kicked out or your parents to become physically aggressive with you I would recommend waiting until you have a solid plan in place. After that it comes down to what you truly believe and staying true to yourself. Your parents might cry or be angry but that won't change with time. I waited to tell my parents until I was 19 and it still caused some really strong emotions and we didn't talk for a long while. But it does get so so much better. I no longer have to hide who I am or what I think. The people I associate with love me for who I am and not for my testimony in the church.I have an awesome husband and friends and my family is slowly learning to accept me for me and not for if I believe in the church or not. You are young and you need to stay safe right now but know that it does get better and you won't have to live by your parents rules forever. Hang in there kid

As someone who grew up in a similar situation with manipulative and passive aggressive parents.... I feel for you. You don't have a lot of power in this situation. If you choose to leave they'll hold it over your head till you move out. When I told my parents I didn't want to be LDS they sent me to a rehab retreat where I spent 49 days hiking through the bloody basin of Arizona(on a forced vegan diet that I had to ration) after the bishop suggested to send me there. The best thing to do may to fake it till you're old enough to move out/get emancipated. Alternatively ripping off the bandaid fast now may give you a clearer picture of where they truly stand. Simply state that you don't want to be part of the church. And that you love your parents dearly and you still believe in being a moral being, just that you feel lied to and betrayed by the lies of the church. If they choose to disregard your feelings and go to being emotionally and potentially physically abusive, don't be afraid to reach out to child protective services.

There is always opposition when you leave a group/tribe/gang/religion, etc. There were probably smart Egyptians back in the day that didn't believe their weird religion; smart Greeks who suspected lightning may not really come from Zeus. Today, there are smart Jehovah's Witnesses that wake up from that coma of a religion; Muslims who leave that faith for a multitude of reasons . They probably all felt/feel similar pressures that you're going through. It's normal. Do the right thing. Conflict is a given. It is IMPOSSIBLE to navigate a path through life that won't anger or sadden or offend somebody. So just do the right thing. Leaving behind false oppressive beliefs in exchange for freedom and enlightenment is always a good move. Let the sheep complain and threaten you all they want.

I am close friends with a young man only a couple years older than you. He is going through much the same things. It’s not easy. I suggest keeping your head low, until you can move out and be self sufficient. But don’t stop your journey to understand. I’m sure many others will suggest it, but try to read the CES Letter. I was born & raised Mormon but was still blindsided by the "endowment" ritual was I was 19 years old. Back then (1987) the ceremony required all participants to pantomime slitting their own throats. [Google "Mormon temple penalties"]

He was not a man from kolob who became god. Jesus is not the product of celestial sex. So, is this information that is given up front to new members? No. Withholding knowledge is what cults do, among other things (i.e. secret unbiblical temple cerimonies that are stolen from freemason cerimonies).

Gotta love the fluidity of a religion with "living prophets" who simply talk out of their ass and then years later, the church excuses it by saying the equivalent of "hey, nobodys perfect" or "yeah our mouthpiece for god said it, but we never made it church doctrine." Did you know Joseph Smith said that there were quakers living on the moon? Then Brigham Young felt the need to one-up him and said there people living on the sun too. Even though both of those insane statements can be backed up by first hand historical accounts, Mormons will usually tell themselves that those statements didn't come from a doctrinal source so they can safely ignore it.

CES letter was what made me leave too. I was 16 when I read it and started asking more and more questions that the leaders couldn't answer. I'm in my 20's now but it's still permanently scarred me for life.
