In this China vlog about living in Beijing as a foreigner, I am out on a sunny Beijing day exploring a converted Anglican Church that was built over a hundred years ago but is now used for something else entirely.

I am a Christian but I think the repurposing of the churches and temples in China is done in a very respectful manner. Compare this with some other countries that repurpose a church to be another religion's place of worship to show that religion's superiority in that area over Christianity, or repurpose a church to be a pub. And please conclude that NOT all churches and other places of worship are repurposed in China. I've found active churches, mosques, and temples across Beijing. So, China respects people of different faith too. Muslims are plenty here, halal restaurants are easy to find and they are not very discriminated as in the US.

👍🏻 yes, you are correct - there are many active religious places of worship being used in China and I have seen many. Not everything reported in the west is accurate.

Good one Iain, whilst I'm agnostic I really enjoy the tranquillity to be found in churchs, and many cathedrals in this country UK and many visited round the world. The nation on which you report is amazing and despite negativity of anglophone media and governments is the future. p.s. have a daily habit whenever China is mentioned in UK media is asking them to which province they refer ? it amuses me.

Many churches in the UK have already been sold and converted to cafes, pubs, clubs, and museums due to declining Christian and Catholic faith.

I think people are moving away from religion more and more, the old churches do make great alternative apartments, cafes etc... I am for that.

I remember one in Derby near the museum was converted to a restaurant years ago, no idea if it still is. One near me has been turned into a residential property.

China is inclusive and tolerant towards foreign religions. Buddhism came from India and Islam from the Mideast. Christianity is here too. But it came with a twist, it came with colonialism. When the new China came into being, the colonists left snd some churches became empty. But good folks are always welcome.

Yep, Christianity was always the gateway to colonisation - history tells us that. 👍🏻

Hello. In fact, in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, Guangzhou, Fushan and other places in China, there are many large and medium-sized churches, and every Sunday Christians will regularly go there to meet and worship. I have many Chinese Christian friends who live in Zhejiang and Fushan.

Thank you for exploring this little known nook in Beijing. What a wonderful way to repurpose the space. If the walls can talk, what this Anglican church building witnessed through China's hundred years of humiliation, the beginning of PRC in 1949, the cultural revolution and China's re-emergence on the world stage is an epic story. When Interwoven with the stories of the people who maintained this building and transformed it into a pocket of calm today would be a promising movie script.

Why is it not still a church? We know that the CCP has a policy of harassing religious groups and torturing people who belong to the Falong Gung group. Religion in China has to adhere to communist party doctrine.

Some old Church building preserved as cultural heritage building. Some people move to new building Church like Haidian Christian Church. But many old Church building still operate as usual like Xuanwumen, St. Joseph, St. Michael, Xishiku, Zhushikou, and Xizhimen Church.

Beautifully repurposed and renovated. It is interesting how even though it is a book store, religious motifs were added to complement the original purpose of the building.

From the largest Anglican Church in Northern China to a bookstore. The CCP is anti religion and probably threatened the worshippers with jail.

A person who believes in God is a good person - no hatred, no vengeance, full of empathy and full of compassion. It is good that people in China believes in higher philosophy of common good, and some have found God.
