The plaintiff says he hired the defendant to do some minor engine work, but the man ended up destroying it. He’s suing for the amount it will cost him to get a new motor. The defendant says he worked on the engine and told the plaintiff there was an issue because it had 300,000 miles on it.

He loosened my spark plugs and when I went in they told me the engine is misfiring would need a heads replaced $1800.00. A week later he did the same thing again but he took it in and they didn’t charge him just tightened the spark plug. Same car, different sex and race. Not racist just smart. I'm a mechanic and I had a guy bring his van in almost a year after I had told him to get his intake gaskets replaced for this very reason. He left the van after work. I started it the next morning and drove it into the shop. I had one of my guys replace the gaskets and change the oil and filter which is standard procedure. The worker went to start it and it acted like the battery was dead. We tried several things before finally figuring out that it was locked up. It had been driven for almost a year with leaky intake gasket and antifreeze getting mixed in with the oil. The owner was livid but it wasn't our shop's fault. He said it was running fine when he dropped it off which was true but it also ran fine when it was pulled in and then never ran again. After the owner left and researched leaky intake gaskets on the internet he came back and apologized. He then understood that driving for a year after he was originally told about the problem was what caused it. This is a real problem and the mechanic probably wasn't responsible even though it initially was started before the oil was changed. That's not good for it but a minute or two shouldn't ruin the engine unless it was ready to go anyway.

If the engine had gunk in the oil then the engine would have gunk stuck to the walls of the block, and just having the oil changed doesn’t get rid of the thick gunk.
@1967davethewave
@1967davethewave 2 жыл бұрын
Some of the gunk will get stuck to the inside of the engine but it's the stuff that isn't stuck to engine that is mixed in with the oil that needs to be removed. It gets circulated through the bearings which are pretty delicate and it destroys them as was probably the case in this instance.

That's what I was thinking. I agree he seems like a good guy but that doesn't make him a good mechanic. Having a little mechanical knowledge also doesn't make you a good mechanic. I think my favorite line from him was "Turn the engine over one time. It's a procedure." Based on the work he did nothing would be gained from that "procedure."

We always called em shade tree mechanics. My late husband (in pic) was the best anyone had every seen around where we're from. He could tell you what was wrong by the sound or smell. When he was in his late teens to early 20's he built a Gran Torino from the ground up.

@@corporateraider77 whether he is or not. She says it negatively. That's what I'm saying. Everyone can't afford to go to a dealer to get work done when it's sometimes double the amount.

@@yo-yolanda4654 exactly. My husband was a licensed mechanic but because he got his through job corp most places around here didn't recognize it. He worked a full-time day job & was a shade tree mechanic on the side. Tax-free work doing what you love, making more than you're full-time job.... cmon..
