Beneath the Planet of the Apes is one of my fav movies. I remember seeing it for the first time when I was about 12 and on Television, they aired the 1st and 2nd films back to back with an hour break. I was blown away particularly by the shocking ending with the statue of liberty then world blowing up. I felt speechless at first, a fantastic movie experience to feel like that. I''ve see Escape, Conquest and Battle too which I like alot.

I think depending on how you look at it Beneath is either one of the best sequels to the original or one of the worst! Still to this day my thoughts are pretty mixed on all the sequels; none of them really need to exist as the original is perfect on it's own, and they all have good points and bad points!

It may have been mentioned but the third film, "Escape from the Planet of the Apes," derives much of its plot and story from the original novel "Planet of the Apes" but cleverly switches the scenario from humans landing on a modern, industrialized world of apes to a story of Apes landing on earth. In the original novel, the Apes live in modern cities, drive cars, and wear clothing similar to humans of earth. When the main character reveals himself to be intelligent and capable of speech, he becomes a curiosity and a celebrity. Then the Apes begin to see him as a threat to their way of life and he must escape back to earth where he finds that earth has evolved into a planet of talking apes as well.

It's the kind of movie you can't turn away from. I was disturbed by it and told myself I didn't like it, but then proceeded to watch it again numerous times. Escape was better, but this movie had its positive elements. My favorite mutant was "Fat Man" that's what the credits say, played by Victor Buono. A close second is NAtalie Trundy, the producer's wife, who was in each of the sequels.

In the cold light of adulthood, 'Beneath' is indeed a stretch. So much of the plot points are contrived, and generally silly. Still, I could care less. I was mesmerized by this as a kid. I didn't know until years later, McDowell had been replaced. James Gregory was great as Ursus. Flaws and all, I still dig it.

I always liked how crazy and dark beneath pota is. This one has the ultimate depressing ending but thats what makes it great. I always considered beneath pota to be the second half of the original movie. In my mind they were both connected as one movie instead of original and sequel. Mainly because they show the complete story of Taylor on the planet of the apes. He starts out as a cynical smartass and evolves into basically last man on earth trying to save the planet. Then the last twist is when he fails he says fuck everybody and pushes the button.

The blood, gore, and images in this film are horrific in a way no splatter flick or CGI mess is today. The shocks are original and realistic. 1. The upside down crucifictions. 2. The "drowning" of Nova. 3. The anatomy work makeup did on the mutants heads. 4. The way the black mutant is dispatched-nasty. 5. Brent, the nominal star of the film, goes down first, with no fanfare or sentiment. A shot to the head, then his already damaged ribs riddled with machine gun fire.
@patricktilton5377
@patricktilton5377 9 жыл бұрын
The mutants -- well, the 5 who interrogate Brent -- did indeed have names. The big cheese was MENDEZ XXVI (Mendez the 26th), the woman was ALBINA, the one wearing glasses was CASPAY, the black man was NEGRO, and the rotund one was named FAT MAN (and I think he was named after the atomic bomb that leveled Nagasaki). Their names are listed in the film's end credits. The only other mutant listed in the credits was referred to as "VERGER" but that is not a name, it's his function at the cathedral.

Saw this at the cinema back in 1970 in the UK when it was an A certificate. I managed to see it again a few years later before it came on TV and it had been bumped up to AA certificate, which was only 14 year-olds and over allowed admission into the theatre. Still a great movie.

This was my first Ape movie in the theater, as I was too young for first. I was incredibly frustrated to watch, knowing that the first had tons of action, and this was a protest message flick. Still, I had to digest at age 8 or so. Boy! Loved all the first 5, saw them all in theatre back to back , all 5, in one day. Conquest was last shown, Then we had to walk home freaked out at 11pm, what an experience.

Back then G-rated didn't equate to kids movies. It does now, but back then it was just a rating for content, and there were many adult themed movies that were G rated. Now we see it as a rating for age, but mostly because R rated movies are seen as grown up movies, even though back then, they were just seen as cautionary for people with more, how do I say, moralistic views of cinema.

I heard a John Landis commentary where he says the original mutant fx were really awesome and disgusting but they decided to go with cheaper less gory fx make up for the human mutants instead for some reason. Landis said he was on set during filming although he was not actually part of the crew. I wish we would have gotten the more gory mutant makeup instead of what they went with.

I actually finish this one when I bother to start it, so it's technically better than Battle and Burton in that respect. My love for 1, 3 & 4 is so far out in front of any of the other films to date that it's hard to rank them, but it does make it easy to set Rise right in the middle of both extremes. I respect the f'd up ending, but it's so ham-fisted and tedious a retread of the first one that I can only give it kudos for daring but ineffective attempted one-upsmanship.

Yes, it's interesting how dark it is, although SF was usually dark until 'Star Wars' in 1977. I don't think it's a good film though. It looks small and cheaper than the 1968 original and the script and direction aren't as strong. Also, the first half is both a retread of the original and unwisely goes from general satire to specific current events satire. Roddy McDowell is missed, Kim Hunter has too little to do and Heston needed to be featured more.
@connorbrennan4233
@connorbrennan4233 9 жыл бұрын
Numinous20111 This film was not as good because not everyone who worked on the original was interested, or available. Charlton Heston felt the original was so excellent, he did not want to make a sequel and only agreed to be in it if he was killed off at some point in the film. Roddy McDowell was in England directing a film of his own, the original director, Franklin J. Schaffner was busy directing Patton, and because 20th Century Fox made a lot of high-costing box-office failures at the point, it decided to lower budgets for its films. Also, it seems they really did have trouble coming up with a good idea on what to do after the events of the original.
@CaminoAir
@CaminoAir 7 жыл бұрын
I agree. This is not the kind of story I imagined would take place after the end of the first film. Has anyone come up with a story concept alternative to continue the 1968 film. Dr. Zeus states his belief that Taylor is a mutant and his tribe lies either in or beyond the Forbidden Zone (about 2/3 of the way through the original movie). That seemed the most likely sequel story. Taylor finding a free tribe of humans somewhere beyond the statue on the beach and having to probably lead them given his conflicted view of humanity (with a journey back to ape city at some point).

the story goes is that Richard Zanuck president of FOx demanded that Taylor blow up the earth. This was due to the fact Zanuck would be fired and tried to make sure Fox wouldn't be able to make more sequels. I enjoy Beneath, but you can tell at certain point it had a lesser budget than the first.

Daniel Patten Rod Serling, who helped write the screenplay for the original, actually wrote a treatment for the sequel about that concept called Planet of the Men. In it, Taylor and Nova have a son named Sirius, who grows ups and leads a human colony against the apes in a final battle (yes, Sirius can speak). In the end, the humans win and take Earth back, while the apes suffer and Dr. Zaius becomes a circus orangutan.
