I am from Canada and I lived in Germany for 8 months. It's very difficult to get a job without German language. I was able to work as a bartender but still very difficult without German. But finding a job in a professional setting without German is next to impossible. Something that is not mentioned here.

Very true, but it makes sense, doesn't it? I mean, would you expect to be able to find work easily in Japan without speaking Japanese? That said, it's also A LOT easier to socialize when you speak the language of the country you're living in. After all, getting a job surely is important, but work isn't everything. Learning the language, even if solely for social interaction, should be your #1 priority no matter where you want to live.

You said, "Finding a job in a professional setting without German is next to impossible." I believe it's the other way around, tbh. I have a Master's degree from a German university, and I work in an international company here in Germany. Everyone (including my German Chef and German Mitarbeitern) at my office communicates in English. I believe it is the middle-level jobs that are the hardest to get without the German language. If you have a Master's degree or a PhD (in one of the STEM fields) from a German university, I think it's still pretty easy to find an English job in Germany (even if the mode of instruction of your university course was English and you know little to no German).

Thank you for listing the benefits. But I think the viewers from the USA, Canada, etc. can not clearly see the fundamental difference in the form of society. With the advantages of a solidarity health insurance, a solidarity unemployment insurance, a closer connection between employee and employer and thus also another way how employees are promoted and kept in the company, there are disadvantages in the form of higher taxes, an obligation to health insurance, unemployment insurance and pension insurance, which influence the ratio of gross to net much more than e.g. in the USA. An employer also thinks much longer about which employees to hire and whether they fit into the team, and the Dismissal Protection Act does not allow it to quickly and easily dismiss the employee. And so German employers attach more importance to prior training and certificates from previous employers. Also the desire for a photo of the applicant is not normal for most foreigners. The solidarity system means that taxes are higher, but there are also advantages for people who don't make it. For people who cannot find work through no fault of their own, there is a basic provision which provides for a subsistence minimum including health insurance and the right to housing. But this of course costs money and is paid for out of taxpayers' money. This fundamental principle, we are all somehow also responsible for the weak, runs through German society and shapes many regulations and behaviors. As a German I have the impression from the USA that the predominant philosophy rather goes in a different direction.

Well, (nearly) free education, great transportation system, social security, free Autobahn asf has to be paid for somehow, right? That's why we have to pay higher taxes and for our solidary social insurance. They don't just fall down from heaven.

The pay is a bit lower than you might find in the US, but you havequite a bit more job security. 24 to 30 days of paid holiday is a great benefit. The healthcare insurance cost is fairly reasonable (count on paying circa €300 per month as your share) when compared to recent insurance costs in the US. Public transport is overrated, but show me where it isn't😉. Cost of living has, over time, become relatively more affordable than that in much of the US and Canada. 56% of Germans speak English, some of them well, but many not ... you will want to learn the language ... plenty of people have gotten by with speaking little to no German, but life is a lot richer when you can follow along. BTW, when it is your birthday, you have to cater your own party for your friends and/or colleagues; on the bright side, they do the same for you.

If you are a contract or term employee you get paid extra 4% in lieu of vacation. The Gig Economy. My company in Canada starts with three weeks per year and moves up to six weeks. Welcome to Germany ; ) - there are a lot of jobs when you are a *specialist* , and the salary is high - just like in north-america. Otherwise you should learn the language. - the weather is good today, and until september. But then you face a lot of grey until February. But you are fro canada, so you know a little around. - vacation is more than US/CA, but so are taxes.... - don't even to try to buy an appartment nowadays, too high prices. Or live on the country-side ; If you are looking for great landscape, you should visit the south, bavaria, switzerland, austria...

You talked about German health insurance like many people do who never needed it. I am German, and I had a little accident last fall, broke my left upper leg. And, yes: Most of the rumors are true. You get free transportation to the nearest hospital, they fixed my leg, and for only ten Euros a day, you get three meals there. If you need an emergency service, just dial 112 from any phone (landline or mobile). There even is a limit on how much you have to pay when you're hospitalized: It's two percent of your annual income. But, never worry: You don't have to pay in advance. I paid the ten Euros because I had them on hand; if not, I would have gotten the same food anyway, and they'd send me a bill. btw: If you ever should come to a German hospital, make friends with the staff. Their coffee is way better than what they serve to their patients.

What amazes me is that in the USA, many companies offer no vacation, benefits or maybe only a couple weeks as compared to Germany. But our true productivity in the USA is on par or less over all then what is found in Germany with all the vacation and days off Germans have. It reminds me of this multitasking myth. Years ago a researcher found that people who multitask end up making so many mistakes and do such slip shod work that they end up spending more time fixing mistakes and quality issues with their work then if they just concentrated on one thing at a time. This is also true of exhausted workers who just show up day after day without a break like zombies. A person needs that down time. With out it, you just work mindlessly with no creativity and limited ability to handle situations that arise out of nowhere.

archangele1 that’s exactly the issue, most companies in Germany offer more than the required 20 working days. Generally it’s 25-28 days and some offer 30 paid vacation days. Despite this, there is no loss of productivity as compared to the US, productivity in Germany is on par

Austria: I (single, no kids) am costing my employer ~68.000 p.a. before income tax, all other income related taxes and fees and health insurance (covering everything, incl. basic dental care and all prescibed medication (I have to pay 6 Euros per box, whatever it costs the insurance), and retirement plan payments, minus taxes and mandatory health insurance and mandatory pension plan (which entitles me to 80% of my net income plus apx one annual income when I retire after 45 years), this is 34500/year net income. additional benefits: 25 days of paid vacation, after 25 years with the company = 30 days (1 week=5days), plus 6 weeks of 100% payed sick leave (doctor has to order it from the first day on) in every case (also several times a year, if needed), and I think another 6 months or so of 80% payed sick leave (donno, never needed this), then degressive. THis is mandatory by law. My company offers another 5 days of payed time off for job related further education per year plus they cover course costs of up to around 1500/year (with a payback plan if I leave within 3 years after that) To put this into perspective: a used family house in good shape in my region costs 5-6 of my annual net incomes, my food is about 3-400/month, upkeep/fees/heating etc for my house apx 350-400/month.

I would like to know how can I move to Germany? I need a German bank account but I can’t request it since I don’t have an address. Any help tips to consider in planning to moving.

THANK YOU for mentioning health care!!! I am in USA and the system totally sucks here. All too many people have no access to health care and if your employer does not provide health care as a benefit, you literally can not afford it. Of course a system like in Germany or Canada is not free. But, it is far more affordable then the insane for profit insurance and medical system scam we have in the USA. I have a couple friends who have moved to Europe and one of the reasons was the cost of health. (The other was the vacation and time off benefits you mentioned)

Large US companies will give employees a start of two weeks vacation time; smaller companies may or may not provide time off. There is still no comparison to vacation time in the EU. I worked for five years at my company and finally accrued 19 days of vacation 😥

m buck50 To a European just 14 days vacation per year sounds ridiculous, having to work with no time off sounds absolutely insane! And after finally accruing a relatively decent amount of time off, I assume that makes it very hard to leave your company even if you are unhappy there.

m buck50 sorry, i actually meant it in more general terms, didn’t mean to sound like i meant you specifically , I can imagine that if someone is unhappy at their place of work but having good vacation time, it would make it harder to leave as they would have to start over at a new company with a lower amount of time off.

...to my mind you missed to point on a few other "rather regular standards" coming along with a "regular working contract" in Germany. There is, if you're married or have children, an automatic health insurance free for non working spouse and children, only working he / she'd pay additional - There is "sick days" - in most companies anything below 6days would not even be worth mentioning - There is pregnancy 14 days before birth is home time plus 6 weeks after birth ( all fully payd) - after birth mothers are entitled to "breast feeding times" if she wishes, Many of the larger/top companies offer financial support on pensionplans, savingplans - there is some protection from beeing fired , regularities on at least a 3 month notice on longer contracts, plus additional month on every year with the company - therefore for a company laying of personal withn many working years can be extraordinnary expensive in times - ALL to the benefits of the emloyer. - and often there's more, - free car, free smartphone if professionally needed, subsidized appartements, or kindergarten, travel costs to reach office etc. - you just have to be on top of their wishlist :-)

@rainerkoch7160
@rainerkoch7160 5 жыл бұрын
while it's correct that the law (BUrlG) says "24 days", this actually means "4 weeks". This is, because the work time law (ArbZG) says, that only the sunday is free from work, so a work week according to law is 6 days of work.. and so 24 vacation days are 4 weeks. The law also mentions, that for a lower number of work days per week the number of vacation days is proportionally reduced. So, for the common 5 work days per week, 20 days of vacation is mandatory. So, to keep vacation time comparable, it's better to count weeks, not days.

But remember L'Oreal is a French company. In France they give their employees the required days off, so for them to not do that in the USA is not very ethical, regardless of whether it is allowed or not. btw, I know of no one with a full time job that doesn't get the full 2 weeks off, sometimes 3 weeks. And once again, most people can get health care. If you can't afford it, you get it when you go to the hospital emergency room. Also health care in Germany is not free. You pay and your employer pays. Taxes!

The EM can't treat your cancer. So no, not most Americans can get healthcare. That is why 35-40.000 of em die each year for treatable illnesses. When no one dies for that in any other developed nation on earth. Please don't try to sell the US healthcare system as anything than the worst healthcare system a developed country can provide. 😏 It, the poverty rate and the crumbling invrastructure are the reason one third of the US is rated as underdeveloped. Give it a few more years in that direction and the US might lose its status as a developed industrial nation. You can thank conservative policies for that btw, if you wondered why that is. 😉

Details on the Visa .... that depends where youre from. EU? Or a so called "privileged Country"? That basically means a Coutnry the EU has a vias Treaty done. Like the US, Puerto rico, Brasil, albania etc. And if your from a "privileged Country" it also depends on the Time you stay. 90 Days or more? And ofc the Question of where you want a visa? Because You just need a "Schengen Visa". Basically one of the Nations within the Schengen Treaty. So .... you could even get a French visa to work in Germany. So yeah .... you should inform yourselve on that. Its a bit ... weird. If you are Staying for over 90 Days it could take Months. So you should go to the German Embassy in your Country and start it. The Reason why it takes so long is that the "Auswärtiges Amt (Ministry of foreign Affairs) has to work together with the region you will live in for the Visa. Ah i think the cost for the Procedure is 60 euros.
