I just bought one, a supercab 373 axle 6.8L v8.F 350, 18mpg at 60, 16mpg at 70mph and 12 at 80mph, intown high11`s to low 12`s. This is my 4th f-series ford and I lke it the best so far. I`ve had a 78 F150 cleveland 400 stick tranny, a 7.3L 1986 F250 gasser MPG no matter how you drove it. a 1996 F250 diesel that got 25 mpg highway untill they took the sulfer out of the fuel, then it went to 12mpg. city and 16 highway. It does sound cool and I was surprised at it`s accelleration, fastest one I`ve owned with out tuning it, which I`ll not do this time

@@WillfulTangentMedia-fn2tp Now that I`ve got 3300 miles on it I`ve noticed a big difference in mileage depending on whose gas I used. the cheap gas at BJ`s. 30 cents a gallon cheaper gets 3 MPG less. Sunoco is best

The new 6.8 L V8 is fundamentally a more racy motor, as it the same cylinder bore with .300 less stroke, and has slightly higher compression at 10.8 : 1 vs. 10.5 : 1 on the 7.3 L. I have a feeling this is going to be great for tuners and the hot rod aftermarket.

I’ve noticed that on the Harley 107 vs 114. The 107 is quicker to rev and off the line faster. But the 114 when weighted down with a passenger and gear moves just as quick as when empty. The 107 feels more sluggish when weighted down. Extra displacement from bore vs stroke is definitely different. Me personally, I think I prefer over square engines.

It’s amazing that almost 50 years later the MPG hasn’t improved. I bought a E250 with 460, 3 speed automatic, brand new in 1975. I used it to tow my race car around the country. It didn’t matter if I towed or was van only, the MPG was 10. That was a carbureted engine with virtually no electronic systems other then ignition. One would think with fuel injection and better atomization of the fuel you would see a significant improvement.

my father had a 1997 f350 crew cab 4x4 with a 460 and a 5-speed manual, from the dealership it got 10mpg.. we replaced the exhaust after the cat with a 3" high-flow muffler and single 3 inch tailpipe and it got 14mpg after that. the big problem with new trucks is that they are fat and overweight, much heavier than older trucks.

@@marzsit9833 Ford killed the best engine they ever put in a truck. 7.3 diesel. I had a '99 with 2" lift/level kit and 35s and it got 19-20 on the highway, 16 to 18 in city driving in Philthadelphia and pulling a 6-7000lb trailer 17mpg at 65 and 70mph. Couple buddies that were Ford mechanics said Ford saying they replaced it because of emissions was bullshit, they replaced it cause it Never came in for repairs. I put 40k miles on it and the Gal I sold it to has put some 250k more on it and most of that pulling an 11k trailer and has never had to do anything to the engine but change filters and oil.

@rontopping2048 ask of the old big blocks got a consistent 10mpg. I've owned Cadillac 472, Chevy 454 and Ford 460. 10mpg empty, loaded, or drop it off a cliff.

I have a 2022 f350 lariat, 6.5’ box, 3.73 gears. I constantly get 12.5 mpg in the city. 15mpg highway on the flat cruise set at 75mph love the truck. Pulling my 29’ enclosed trailer I get 9.5. Love this motor

The gas mileage is better than that, I’m getting 15.4 with my 22 7.3 on the gauge so even if it’s 2 miles per gallon less it’s still 3 miles per gallon better than that.

For anyone wondering about real fuel economy ratings not an 8 minute drive… I did 140 miles yesterday on eco mode, with cruise set at 70 in my 7.3, no trailer just a straight up highway run and got 17.3mpg. In the city so far it has not dipped below 14.5

@@wizard_of_poz4413 Most smart people DONT WANT A DIESEL! The new ones are unreliable pieces of junk. And if you have an old Cummins, that means the rest of the truck has disintegrated. If you haven’t driven a new 7.3, you have no room to talk. They are plenty fast and tow great. Not as good as a diesel, but plenty good for most people.

@@GWN_Garage the time it takes to charge huge batteries on a large truck would make businesses lose a lot of money. Imagine having to haul something from one place to another during the day and having to stop what you’re doing for 5-6 hours to charge the battery. It’s not sustainable

Locomotives are electric! The drive Motors are electric. The diesel engines run generators. It’s basically an electric transmission. The thing is, the energy density of batteries is nowhere near that of fossil fuels. What does make sense are hybrid vehicles like the F150 Powerboost. Don’t need to run the engine on downhill grades, in parking lots, at stoplights, plus a little extra oomph on takeoff.

Fuel mileage on a 3.1 mile loop is meaningless. And the dash estimate can easily be off by 10% or more. You need to drive at least 300 miles and measure the actual fuel used to be close to accurate.

Honestly, I really liked the 6.2 SOHC they had in the older generation super duty’s… 2019 and older. I had a 2017 model with the 6.2 and 3.73 rear end, and for me it was excellent. I wish I hadn’t traded it. On a long trip I would consistently average 16-17mpg and around the house I’d average about 14 mpg. and it had more than enough torque for just about any job I needed to get done. I hope the 6.8 proves to be a good one. I’m excited about it. I’ll miss the 6.2. It wasn’t everyone’s favorite but I will always be a fan of that one.

The difference between 10 and 11mpg is a much higher percentage when the mpg is that low to begin with. Over 100k miles at $4.50 a gallon that’s over $4,000 in fuel savings. In a fleet that can make a huge difference!

@@waltchan Super Duties’ MPGs aren’t rated by the EPA. But I’d imagine yeah because it’s a smaller displacement engine making less power and torque.

One thing good is that Ford went back to the pushrod engine with 2 valves per cylinder. It is not economical, nor is it modern. It is straight forward and tried and true. Been about 30 years

I know it's tough, but gear ratios are important in these tests. Don't compare the performance of these with a 3.73 ram unless the Ford is in a similar ratio. Folks seem to forget that rear end gear ratios are just as important as hp and tq. Much like they forget that payload will always limit the tow numbers...towing 21k pounds would equate to ~ 3150lbs of payload used of you want to be truly safe and within the limits of your truck.

I was just scrolling through the comments to highlight your points on the gear ratios as well. If he’s talking about tire tread and air dams making a big enough impact on fuel economy to note them, but this could be a 3.31 versus a 4.3… useless test without this information.

I would go with the 6.8, it's more than enough for me towing 6-8k lbs, 2-3x per week delivering parts to paint and body shops and mechanics in the west Texas area traveling roughly 280 miles per day x5, I currently have a 19 ram 1500 that I recently purchased in October 2022 with 8600 original miles and since then I've just hit 47k miles, however, I would get the longer bed and extended range fuel tank on the 6.8, also my truck is my daily driver, it's all about a combo of necessity and preference, I'd have to weigh the cost difference between an XLT w/6.8 over the same with 7.3 🤷‍♂️

Don't underestimate a 3.5 ecoboost f150. They pull like diesels and get 20+ mpg when driven lightly. They are a lot more affordable to buy and cheaper to own than a super duty truck. I've towed with 5.7 hemi trucks before and currently own a 2019 3.5 ecoboost f150 with the max tow package, rated for 12,800lbs. The 3.5 is a FAR better towing experience. Not just the power, but the suspension and stability, too. Like most people, I don't like to hear the engine scream at 5k+ rpm when pulling up hills. The ecoboost just hums up the hill at 3-4k, not struggling a bit. The powerband is very broad and it doesn't need to rev high to make big power.

@@scarletboa As a current owner of a 2019 Expedition, I can confidently say I will never own another 3.5EB. Been in the shop many times and still goes into limp mode every other month. I used it to tow a SxS and camping supplies from OK to CO and it got like 9mpg and struggled with overheating even on the flatland. Absolute garbage engine and I just don’t understand why people like it unless it’s just Blue Oval fan boys. Full disclosure, I like Ford, especially the SD but that ecoboost is trash.

@farmerbyron1 it sucks that you've had those issues with your 3.5. I'd be upset, too. My 3.5 has been drama-free so far, fortunately. As far as overheating, ford re-designed the thermostat. It was discovered that some of the original 2nd gen 3.5 thermostats get stuck and don't open all the way, especially after having the engine worked on. I know a few people that completely fixed their overheating issues with a new t-stat. They were regularly seeing 240+ coolant temps when towing heavy. After installing the new design t-stat, they almost never exceed 220.

I chose the 6.8 because could not get the 7.3 without the driver aids. It also cost over $5000 more with the required upgrades to get the 7.3 Godzilla. Overall cost and no driver assistance were more important for me.

I have had my CDL for over 20 years and still move trucks daily in our yard, occasionally I do get out of the building for a short run. The truck is for personal use, have an 8000 lb conventional trailer used for recreational use.

Re-wording your summary. If you put the pedal to the floor with the 6.8 while driving the 7.3 kinda reasonably the 6.8 will still get better mpg.

Pulling very likely the same weight, both engines using the same block the 6.8 with less stroke more compression versus the 7.3 with more stroke and a bit less compression should be close. Wish Ford would bring back 300CID . Pull quite well, bullet proof and Ford stopped producing this straight six because they would not die. A lot of the F-250 trucks even extended cab 4X4 had this engine. Was not a firecracker by any means, pulled like a tractor and got the job done. The 300CID was the most reliable engine Ford has ever made

You stated a few times that the payload was the same between the two, but the numbers beg to differ. First off where you are correct: When comparing the offroad version of the v6.8L (3051lb) to the standard 7.3L (3041lb), the offroad version only had 10lb (0.3%) more cargo capacity. But... Now compare the two stock trucks, the 6.8L had 3969lb compared to the 7.3L had 3041lb, which is a 928lb (30%) difference. Depending on what the truck is doing that could be HUGE! My case: I will be pulling a sub 10K lb trailer but carrying a lot of weight in the bed of the truck. In my case the 6.8L looks like a better option

To get the real MPG of these trucks you would have to do a long highway trip and calculate the MPG mathematically, not use the instrument display computer.

I think I'd like to know what the fuel economy differences during a towing load for example to a trailer. That's shaped like a barn door kind of like the trailer's most contractors use that weighs about ten thousand pounds

A wash, I think, if you go the same speed. Here’s why: 1. On the flats, less than full throttle, the 6.8 would do better due to higher compression ratio and smaller displacement. Higher combustion temps = more efficiency. 2. In the hills the 7.3 would do better IF you use a use a slightly higher rear end gear ratio to deliver the same power at the same road speed with lower engine speed. Or with the same rear end ratio at the same speed, the 7.3 would have the pedal slightly off the floor, resulting in better efficiency because gasoline cars are programmed to run fuel rich at heavy throttle settings to reduce combustion temperatures and reduce NOx production. Bottom line, if you’re going to tow heavy or have a lead foot, get the 7.3. Otherwise get the 6.8

Just don’t buy it all trimmed up. I got a base f250 with Stx package, fx4, 6.2/6 speed extended cab long bed for a good price. Especially compared to the fancy bells and whistled models bused diesels going for 10-20k more than my new model. If you run a business the expense is more justifiable. If you don’t run a business, probably don’t need the truck or the payment

Good power and presumably better fuel economy, plus the 6.8 is technically interesting with a shorter stroke and slightly higher compression ratio. I'd be happy with either, but the 6.8 would be my first choice.

Shorter stroke just means less torque especially as the motor ages. Many examples over the years from more than one manufacturer.

The two 6.8’s have 3.73 gears according to the Truck Safety Comp Cert Stickers he showed. Code 3E. I don’t think he showed the sticker on the 7.3 truck.

Gear Ratio options are determind by engine choice and should not be affected by the different trim levels.

When they first announced the 7.3 in the new trucks i was excited that they were bringing back the legendary 7.3 motor that was discontinued in 2003 only to come and find out that it 7.3 gas not diesel 😒

I have a 2019 F250 Super Duty with a 6.4 L gas in it. It's awesome. I paid 28 k for it with less than five thousand miles on it. I pulled into the dump it's over 20000 lb(perhaps over 23,000 shhhhh) and it doesn't even feel like I'm towing anything . I to live in Utah and some of the steep slopes if you are telling a bunch you can expect to get just over three miles per gallon. I averaged just about 13 MPG over 40000 miles. I do more Towing the most of you though. If I was going to buy a dedicated tow rig I probably go diesel but if you're towing less than 75% of the time these engines are awesome. The turning radius on this truck is shockingly good. I can parallel park a dump trailer in Salt Lake City in one of these like it's a Prius and mine doesn't even have that overhead 3D camera thing. I think this year I'm going to get me a 7.3 for personal use to replace my old camping pickup. The confidence you feel on the road while towing with one of these trucks is just phenomenal. On top of that I haven't changed anything other than brake pads and the oil. These new trucks are just awesome.

I have the 2020 f350 7.3 and I love it but I didn’t buy it for the mileage but instead for reliability & towing purposes. With a truck that heavy I’m not to concerned about how fast I can take off since I’m not out proving anything cause I know what I’m driving. (A beast!💪🏽😤

Which Is better out of all engines? Obviously the all new 6.7L HO powerstroke that's over a monster 500 hp and 1200 ft-lb of torque. Can't wait to see the Limited that's it's only engine included and that's what I love about it. Even though it's top of the line in the super duty lineup Limited is still my favorite so Is the king ranch on any truck model F150 or duallies as long as it has that king ranch cabin interior I'd definitely take it hands down.

At first when I was 16 I owned a 2001 7.3l platinum F250 then regretfully gave it to my little cousin, 2 years later in my senior year 2016 got a blue 2014 f150 limited for Christmas and then the bed got knocked off by a drunk driver in a lifted f250 platinum out of nowhere from a hill and the air bag knocked him out and killed him and now I have a 2009 Tacoma that's been doing me good. About to get a bigger truck again and so far both half ton and heavy duties done good for me. Makes no difference to me now if it was a new diesel with the 10 speed like they are now all nice on the inside then yeah of course I'll be stuck on it they're better than ever. Plenty of power in hauling and acceleration. 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

What is your tire size and having a tremor you get less mpg cause you have heavier setup unless you drive factory size and lowest aggressive terrain tires your not going to be able to see high mpg I have a 2019 f250 6.2l crew cab long flatbed with factory size mud tires I saw a drop in mpg of 3 to 4 mpg going from factory bed to a flatbed and all terrain tires to mud tires

Although it was not an option when I bought my 21' F350 XLT I really like my 7.3L. I would buy it again today. I tow a 8400 # travel trailer with ease thru out the PNW hills & mtns without breaking a sweat. I really do not understand why they even bother with a 6.8L? If you're buying a Super Duty for mpg's then you're buying the wrong vehicle. Get a Ranger or small F150. I can't imagine there would be more than 0.2 mpg difference at best in most cases. I doubt there is even that. I did not want a diesel. Had them and do not tow that heavy of loads to pay the premium & extra maintenance. If I were towing more than 13-14k then I'd take a hard look. Difference between a diesel & 7.3 gasser towing is about 1-2 mpg's in my case. I can buy a lot of gas for the $10k difference in cost. I ave 13 empty around town, 17.5 on the hwy empty; 10-10.3 mpg towing our trailer up & down hills. Got 13 on a flat hwy trip once. Not sure I'd give the mpg award out based on a 3 mile trip. Did they both have the same rear ratios as well?

@@trenegade5441 i originally wanted a f250 . After a a little research I found that I could only opt for a 3.55 or 4.30 rear gears. The f350 was either the 3.73 or 4.30. I’ve had the 3.55 before and it’s not tall enough and I thought the 4.30 could be too tall. I wanted the 3.73. I could always drop a gear if needed. Nut for nut, bolt for bolt the f350 & f250 are the same, except for that and an overload spring on the f350. The cost difference is/ was $1700. You gain an extra 1k load cap as well. At the price of these I felt another few dollars was well worth it. So yes, I’d go the f350 route again.

10 vs. 11 mpg is actually a pretty big difference. 39 vs. 40 mpg is negligible.

I have a 2019 Trident 6.8 V10 that I think is an excellent motor with its 6-speed transmission in my 14K lb. class C RV. Plenty of power, especially compared to my older 5.9 diesel class A RV. I've had zero issues with the Ford truck part of the RV except it likes to drink gas (like I like to drink beer) consistently 8.5 - 9 MPG on regular gas. My 2019 6.8 V10 has plenty of power, so do the Ford powered RV's with the newer 7.3 or the new 6.8 V8 motors get better gas mileage? Back in 2020-21 when the RV's switched to the Ford 7.3 V8 the RV's appeared to jump up about $10K. in MSRP at that time. Do the new Ford motors really get better gas mileage, or are they Ford's answer to meet tougher EPA emissions? To get the higher HP numbers do the new Ford motors require Premium fuel as my 6.4 V8 Dodge Challenger does?

I would like to see a mileage comparison for the 6.8 and 7.3 by driving 100 miles on the interstate towing a one ton trailer, a two ton trailer and then a four ton trailer. For me a mileage comparison around town is really not informative. I live in the country and tow a trailer 350 miles one way in a single day. I would like to see long distance fuel cost comparison results.

Yeah exactly. These videos where they drive 10 miles and say its 10mpg just aren't accurate. I saw another video where a guy drove a 7.3 unloaded 500 miles and was averaging 15+ mpg without looking at the lie-o-meter, he actually fueled it up and did the math and these computers are about 1mpg optimistic.

I get 15 - 15.5 with my '23 XL 6.8, 4" lift 26x16 wheels and 37x15.5 tires on 3" spacers, 4.30 gears. Wide, unaerodynamic. I never haul a trailer with this truck but if I ever do, I still have the stocks just in case 😁

I don't understand the payload situation. The third truck shown, has a 6.8 with the off-road package, otherwise almost identical to the first 6.8? So you're losing nearly 1000lbs of payload because of that package? Maybe I don't understand gross weight rating. And why is the 7.3 tow rating about 4000lbs more when the HP/Torque difference to the 6.8 is pretty marginal?

I think he's also comparing a 250 to a 350 but I could be blind. The 5th wheel / gooseneck package adds gvwr, the engine adds gvwr and the axle ratio can also marginally change the GVWR, as well as the cab and box setup, and 2wd vs 4x4.
