In Toronto Canada's motorcycle show in the late 1970's, or early 1980's I watched a video made by BMW., showing how only a small amount of weight( 15lbs), distributed on different parts of it's motorcycle, on a straight line controlled track, affected it's straight line stability, at only 86 miles per hour...We were blown away when the bike went into a slow weave, after putting the weight on the rear carrier,(where we thought it should be) ., & also blown away that BMW would make such a video for safety sake , because it was showing it's premium model costing 3 times it's nearest japanese competitors.Does anyone know what happened to this video!?

Thank you very much for this series. Definitely one of the best & simplified explanations of complex bike topics! Just after watching this video, I understood why changing the front brake disk of my Africa Twin 650 with a "heavy-duty" edition resulted in worse handling and odd vibrations (especially during low-speed cornering). The most interesting question for me is what is the best solution for positioning the luggage on an adventure bike? There is an eternal debate between hard panniers and soft luggage but more and more I am starting to think the best solution would be a soft saddle bag like Giant Loop Coyote that brings the weight more to the center of the bike. Would be interesting to hear your opinion about this.

So true. When I fill up the tank with 7 gallons of fuel on my 1600 B even in town rides and parking lots, the bike becomes terrible to deal. Exception of highway rides at 70 mph.

How about maximum load capacity, for us large/heavy riders and their large/heavy pillions (plus luggage)? Bike makers make it really hard to find the GVWR or max carrying capacity of a bike, why is this? I'm shopping for a new bike and need one that can handle 200kg+, but it's very hard to find a bike's load capacity. Also, how much overloading is "safe"?

I've always thought unsprung weight was simply any weight not carried by the suspension. How does rotation affect it?

My bike weights 207kg. I weight 57 kg. When I drop it I can’t get it up by myself. When braking I feel more push from back to the front and this cause panic. Parking, holding vs. are always a problem. I’m a newbie btw. Should I change the bike? (CBR650R)

As a 6ft 4" 18st guy I'm all too aware it's easy to overload a bike. It's also why I prefer carrying heavy luggage as panniers rather than in the top box. Actually quite easy for me to overload a bike if I take a pillion so I don't anymore.

Banditmanuk: I’m your size, I can’t believe 45 years ago I rode a Fizzy! BMWs and Harleys: the chubbier blokes bike of choice. 2016 R1200R Sport, the bike doesn’t even know I’m on it and feels great for the bigger bloke. And a lower profile than a GS... that from a guy who had 11 years on an 1150GS

Exactly the same bike, same power, tyres, conditions, same corner, except the weight, one has a engine heavier than the other. Which one has the most grip on the limit?

Hi Adam, I like the illustration of a ladder. Makes the point well. Just a thought, when you speed up you accelerate, when you slow down you decelerate (not deaccelerate).
