Bergmann was one of the reasonably successful yet relatively unknown manufacturers of early automatic pistols. Originally a delayed blowback patent purchased by Bergmann, the design was refined and simplified by none other than Louis Schmeisser into the 1896 Bergmann, in three different calibers (5mm No.2, 6.5mm No.3, and 8mm No.4). Its evolutuion would continue into a locked-breech design using the more powerful 9x23mm cartridge and the later variations would see use as late as WWII.

Almost 20 years ago, I was given Edward C. Ezell's Handguns of the World as a gift (your review of that book was typically excellent). For some reason, out of the many fascinating guns he covers, the Bergmann's have particularly appealed to me. I never thought I'd get this good a look at one. Thank you for it!

Back in the 80's a Bergmann crossed my path. It was a 6.5 rimless, grooveless, with a barrel 2 inches longer than the one you show. It was nickel plated and it had an inscription stating that it had been given as a first prize in a shooting match in Argentina. This pistol had a SET trigger, believe it or not. It was sold to an American collector later on.

I really like the look of the Bergmann pistols, pretty elegant looking (for the time)
@nf4866

I still think it's elegant looking. Maybe not elegant in the way we think of current day firearms as looking elegant. But it's almost like a fine art piece. I wonder if the designer had that in mind or if it was a happy accident. It would make a cool display piece either way, I think.

Number on the barrel are like shotgun gauge: from 1lb (453.5g) lead you can get: 278 6.5mm pellets (Bergmann 1896 No 3, here) 611 5mm pellets (Bergmann 1896 No 2) 156 7.88mm pellets (Bergmann 1896 No 4 8mm, slightly diffrent) 12 18.53mm pellets (shotgun 12 gauge: usually 18.2-18.6mm barrel diameter, choke excluded) Numbers on diffrent models from: www.forgottenweapons.com

+Fredrik Häll Many movie makers know little about weapons and less about physics, but more of what looks "cool" on screen, hence the meaningless unrelated parts glued to props such as the windshield wiper blades on the Imperial storm trooper blasters. Just once I'd like to see a future weapon prop designed with some semblance of reality. (Rail guns, plasma weapons, even lasers of contemporary concept can be extrapolated to something evolved in future.)

+Fredrik Häll If you want to see one in action on screen, check out the classic John Wayne movie Big Jake. His son Pat Wayne uses a later model quite effectively. I think it makes a good Steam Punk weapon too. It has the graceful but blocky aesthetic favored by the genre. Especially if it's painted in brass metallic paint.

As Bob Taylor wrote on your website, the number on the barrel denotes the diameter as gauge. A 5mm sphere of lead weighs 1/611th of a pound (there are 611 5mm spheres in a pound of lead). A 6.5mm sphere of lead weighs 1/278th of a pound.

Is it possible that the 278 could mean .278 caliber, in a measurement that was common at the time and place? The length of an inch varied quite a bit throughout time and across different locations. I would think it would be relatively simple (if a little tedious) to figure out what common units of measurement were in use where it was made in 1896, and do some simple mathematical conversions until you find one that coincides with the number .278 equaling 6.5mm.

That thing is freaking awesome and I want it lol Sadly don't live in the USA and don't have anywhere near the money to buy it. I believe it would be considered an antique and therefore not actually a firearm in Canada. The magazine design is ingenious, but overly complicated...one wonders why they didn't simply opt for a detachable box magazine of some sort - it seems like it would work in that design with some basic modifications to the receiver.
