Another pair of transitional Bergmann transitional prototypes today, this time ones that sit between the 1896 and 1897 designs (No2/3/4 and No5). One of these is basically an 1896 frame with an 1897 upper assembly and locking system, while the other is basically an 1896 action with an 1897 grip frame and stock attachment socket. Their serial numbers indicate that they were actually part of standard production, although they do not conform to the standards of the 1896 and 1897 models.

Technology evolution is usually interesting, and with firearms, aircraft, or tanks it becomes fascinating to me. My favorite is when a manufacturer hangs on to an old paradigm and perfects, like with some of the last combat biplanes, seaplanes, or combat piston-engine airplanes. Just the sound of a Hawker Sea Fury is intoxicating.

TY again for another great video. I find it interesting that from approx 1889 to 1915 that the semi auto pistol went through so many design changes & "styles" that to this day they are so much more appealing & desirable than most modern pistols IMO. Previous to watching FG I was ignorant of the Bergman pistols, I am again happy I subscribed to this channel. Keep up the great work

ty for this series. I like all firearms and have subbed most firearm channels but this channel is by far my favorite. everything modern is basically the same as far as mechanisms go with exception of a few, but you always bring something unique and go into more detail. from history to mechanics. so again thank you for bringing knowledge that would otherwise be "forgotten".

would b cool though if you made another channel and did reviews on modern firearms in the same fashion ie history, mechanics, anecdotes etc. would b nice to learn more than what most channels put out. I never really understood what firing over and over teaches you about the gun other than reliability and that's usually a variable due to ammo used, break in periods, quality control etc.

The step to detachable magazine seems an improvement. The lack of control over retaining the monkey tail clip in case needed again to reload, especially in combat, seems a major weakness. With a mag you have more control over its release and retention.

Are these still capable of firing without any damage to the gun itself or they're just a shelf piece?
@fibrewire08
@fibrewire08 7 жыл бұрын
Guns in general age really well if you take care of them so yes these are capable of firing if you can get the ammo for them. However most people would advise against shooting loads that the particular weapon wasn't designed for because it will likely damage the gun over time.
@Taolan8472
@Taolan8472 7 жыл бұрын
In one of the videos Ian shows ammunition, and the ammunition has not aged particulalrly well. While a well maintained gun will last as long as the maintenance does, ammunition has a far less impressive shelf life. The older stuff especially, it deteriorates. New ammo could be made, but without the original load specifications its a bit of a crapshoot. We can estimate ranges for things like chamber pressure and whatnot but it would be difficult to replicate accurately without that info.

So these move from clip to magazine. Is there any compelling reason for a clip over a magazine?
@md_vandenberg
@md_vandenberg 7 жыл бұрын
Faster loading + more ammo = longer shooting at bad guys
@ScottKenny1978
@ScottKenny1978 4 жыл бұрын
The biggest reason is that the feed lips are actually really hard to get right, so clips let you make the feed lips as part of the gun, and then the clips only need to hold the ammunition. Magazines need to both hold ammunition and (usually) be the feed lips. The Madsen and Johnson LMGs are examples of magazines that don't have feed lips, which means they need to have some extra part to hold the ammunition inside.
