well this is confusing as heck. everybody on KZfaq has a video about spreader settings. well if you are a beginner you may leave more confused than you started. BYD is going to show you how to apply Fertilizer to your lawn and how to calibrate your spreader. One of the things you'll like in this video is that you don't have to. The manufacture of the spreader that makes the same fertilizer has done this for you. People always ask B Y D also what is the best spreader to buy. MY answer is LESCO, it't the name the professionals trust. I love my lesco spreader for many reason but to put it simple it's worry free. So after watching this video you should know how to calibrate your lesco spreader if needed, and be confident that you are doing it right with the spreader setting. I really like your simple, easy method, inexpensive solution. Sometimes you show expensive equipment, chemical or solution but you also inform average home owners who take care of their lawn, what is the alternative to them, which I appreciate. Thank you.

Tip, get a white crayon and cover the numbers on the dial setting on your Lesco. Once you have the numbers filled in get a cloth with some goo gone and lightly go over what you just colored. This will help you see the numbers easier.

Hello. Want to thank you for the clear as water and detailed explanation. I finally bought my Lesco 50lb spreader yesterday. As you mentioned, I also buy Lesco products only and follow the required schedule for my lawn type. In the past, I used an Echo 6o and used the nickel size fertilizer drop method which worked well, but I ended up using more material than needed sometimes depending on the product. Today will be the first day I use my new Lesco spreader assembled by SiteOne. I will do exactly as you showed in the video. I have 7000 ft2 of Centipede and the LESCO Dimension 0.15% 13-0-5 30%PolyPlus OPTI45 Pre-Emergent Plus Fertilizer 50#. Will see what it comes out. Many thanks . Keep the videos coming.

I have had 2 scotts (very bad) one earthway (ok, but has issues but way better than scotts) and the lesco stainless 80 lb for 600. Hands down the Lesco is my favorite, what a beast so durable, accurate and smooth to use.

Hey BYD. I enjoy all of your videos and appreciate the content that you put out. I just wanted to point out that when you were measuring your 2.5 lbs you should have left it where it was initially. That scale measures pounds and ounces, so you would have wanted 2lbs, 8 oz. You actually put in about 2.3 lbs. Small potatoes, I know.

BYD i have not seen anyone do a video for a spreader that you pull behind a lawn tractor. the reason im asking is i have to use a walker to get around but i can still ride my lawn tractor, but im afriad im wasting money by putting to much fert down at a time i believe i have around 14000sq ft of yard to apply fert to any advise would be great

ShermX69X they all pretty much work the same. The difference is this spreader has three hole that the fertilizer comes out of.

I got one from Harbor Freight and Tools and it was surprisingly very accurate.

Great video, I have a question, If the krill ( sorry if I misspell) size are a different size do you have to recalibrate the spreader to get the right amount that you need to the turf? For instance if you put down one chemical in one yard, like Milo, then regular fertilizer in another yard. How would you do the settings. You want to do it right. Time is money in the lawn care biz. Thanks

They spreader settings are on the bag for each product, it’s calibrated to those settings. If there are no spreader settings for your spreader then yes you might.

Have a ? Regarding Scott’s products. I roughly have a yard that’s 900sqft and I followed the directions on the bag and used a Scott’s spreader even weighed out the product, for whatever reason what I weighed out for 1000sqft only covered 1 section of the yard. What did I do wrong?

Not sure 🤔 myself. I can only say if you put the correct amount in you need to spread that amount evenly in that spot or area.

Do you typically need to aerate before you apply fertilizer? We purchased our home 1 year ago, it was 1 year old when purchased. We have not yet applied fertilizer to the lawn at all since we've moved in.

Tisha Johnson May is the best time to aerate, but you can apply fert 3 times a season. You don’t have to aerate but it really helps.

Ok...what if I have to spread 7 lbs per 100 SQ FT....It's a Hotshot Spreader....NOT 1,000 SQ FT...But 100 SQ FT...Can't find settings for that ANYWHERE!!

Now sure what product you using but that sounds like it way to much. Sometimes you’ll need to buy a product and find the spreader they have listed on the product to keep from make that mistake.

How much do you charge to apply fertilizer per thousand sq. ft.? I wan to offer this service to my customers but don't really understand what to charge them. Love your videos!

The best way for you to find out is ask you local guys their rates. If that isn’t gonna happen you gotta figure fert cost and sq ft. Example. All your lawns together add up to 100k sq feet. You cost to buy it is 2 thousand. You want to make 4-5 thousand. Or let say a bag of fert cost 30. You can get 3 lawns that are about 5k each. Your charging 60 or more. These are only examples. So companies literally charge by the 1k. So there’s no one formula 👍🏾

Couldn't you have opened the spreader setting to a larger hole so you could have just walked the area once rather then twice to put the 2.5lbs out? I still can't understand how to determine what setting to use to only walk the area once to empty what you started with.

Yes but you’d have to know that for sure. Calibrated is not easy sometimes. This video is just an example 👍🏾
