Ashes of Creation is an open world MMORPG set in a fantasy environment where you can choose different classes and races to adventure through with your friends. Intrepid Studios is the developer behind the game. They’re technically an indie studio, but their creative director Steven Sharif has a clear vision for his video game: Massively Multiplayer Role Playing Game. He wants to put the massive back in MMO. Exploring dungeons, griding for gear, crafting armor/weapons, learning new spells, and competing in large scale PvP battles. High end PvE such as raids will mainly occur in the open world. Bosses will spawn and roam through the land. Are YOU ready to enter the world of Verra?

Easy. We played good games in the past. Then new games launched and we fell for their promises. We were disappointed by those games and fell for the promises of the next big mmo. With every new disappointment we realized more and more why we loved the first good games we played. AOC promises to bring back the feeling and gameplay of the old good games. The younger generation doesn't have the comparison to the better games in the past. They can't understand, why we want systems back, that to them seem dated and have no appeal. I hope AOC will introduce these generations to the experiences we had back in the day.

Keep in mind that "old" is a relative term. One poster shared they are 67 and I will be 65 in a few months. We have been playing games a very long time. When I was a child the choices were a board game, a card game or the odd ancient (by today's standards) pinball machine at the drug store. The first computer I used took punch cards that contained the program to draw a simple circle...LOL Games used to be fun. Now they have become a chore or time sink with even job-like characteristics. Ug!!!! I was not aware of Ashes of Creation until this video turned up in my recommendations. I am glad I watched it. I will be checking it all out. Thank you to you and your guests for sharing your/their insights.

Ah another awesome Video: I am prob the oldest person you know who still plays MMOs. I'm 55, I have played every MMO out there...some died in less than 2 months (I'm tallking to you Shadowbane)....others lasted years (STILL playing Warcraft in one form or another)....Eve Online is still going and look how old it is (2005 it start?). Ultima Online i played for years, that game was pretty harsh as anyone could and would PK you, and you lost everything. I love MMO's, i dont jump around from one game to another and tend to play the same one for years. (why does it sound like I am filling out a guild application lol).....Keep up the videos Doc! we need the copium!

Ha, I am 35, so I am glad that so many players are of like minded age as I am. I didnt get to play MMO"s until I graduated high school, but man I have so many good memories of having really cool experiences with other players I meet in games like WoW, Rift, SWTOR, SWG, LOTRO and the like. All the games that I played back then have either died and shut their servers down, or they became corrupt with greed like WoW with Activision Blizzard or SWTOR with their Cartel coins and turned their whole focus on their in-game store and gimics to make you spend more money. Even LOTRO is guilty of this with making you pay to ride a mount, but they have sort of backed away from shoving their store down our throats as much. But anyway, I think that is, like you said, why Ashes of Creation is so appealing! Because it allows older players to regain the feelings of excitement that they got from previous titles playing with friends and being able to finally have a new experience, and younger players can be exposed to a MMORPG that truly lives up to the name of the genre, and hopefully be the WoW for them that gets them hooked for the genre.

One of my biggest concerns for Ashes is the lack of interest from what I call “The instant gratification generation”. The sheer time sink for Ashes longevity is going to be so high, that I feel like it’ll be hard to pull in the generation that consumes information in 15 second clips.

(1:09) Did you catch that? "The list goes on...", but EVERYONE starts with Wildstar. The greatest game that should still be except fixed so it's not so boring at the end. As an old man, I'd like to answer this question: It's because the younger generation is looking for something they can attach themselves to and love. Unfortunately, MMOs die so regularly that younger people do not want to invest the time into something that could disappear six months after launch.

I love this topic and I have my own personal opinion on this subject. I've felt that for a LONG time mmorpgs have lacked innovation. Sure we've gone from tab targeted games to action combat like in black desert online, but the issue with a combat system like bdo's is that without strong enemies to fight against, the combat system doesn't shine at all. I want to bring everyone back to when TERA was a buy to play game that had "big assed monsters" or BAM's for short, and that actually held meaning. Giant assed creatures that had a decently large hp pool that did pretty huge amounts of damage to the player spawned in the open world in droves and some quests had you have to party up in order to take some of them down. This was a step in the right direction, but unfortunately the developers always end up trying to bring more people into mmorpgs, specifically casual players by nerfing the only unique mechanic in their mmorpg to the point that those BAM's would die in 5-7 hits. It is my personal belief that as the gaming landscape changes, mmorpgs should reflect those changes. This means that as souls-like games became more popular, mmorpgs should have adopted souls-like mechanics to reflect what people are currently playing and enjoying. The perfect example of this is elden ring. Imagine how HUGE Chrono Oddysey would have been if it released a few months after elden ring came out? My point is that mmorpgs are staying the same. The formula doesn't ever change, and because of that they've become stale. Sure ashes of creation has some new ideas and I'm always excited to see new mmorpgs, but the fact remains that no matter how impressive or interesting your games combat mechanics are, if there are no enemies that require skill to kill in the game, then your combat system will be optimized into only pressing as few skills as possible to grind until max level, and by then people will be bored and move on. People have build variety within souls like games due to the enemies being tanky enough to warrant using multiple skills, and the utilities of those skills vary beyond just doing damage and providing crowd control. My biggest hope for the mmorpg genre is Chrono Odyssey. I truly truly hope its what it says it is on the tin, a souls-like mmorpg.

As a 21 yr old man who has grew up playing video games. I think it comes down to two things. 1. MMO games past their prime 2. Other games coming in and capturing our attention. I player Hardcore Classic for the first time last year and it was my first experience playing Classic and my friends exclaimed,” World of Warcraft? What are you? 50?” BUT…come 3 minutes after I streamed they thought it looked cool and just didn’t have anyone to introduce them into it. 2. A lot of my friends played the looter-shooter game Destiny. That game has had my friends on a chokehold for a long time and I can confidently say that it definitely has a lot of similarities with MMOs. The young generations like me will jump to an MMORPG, done well. And then we will become content creators the more we learn.

Im not old, im just balding. LOL I think for a lot of us the massively multiplayer part hit hard that first time we logged into our first MMO. I remember walking into Orgrimmar for the first time and just being in awe at how many people were on my screen. MMOs were pretty much the only place you could get that feeling in gaming at the time. I also think gamers have changed. When i try to bring friends into the genre theres no instant gratification for them so they quit. They based their entire opinion on the game within the first hour of playing. I think Ashes will (or should try to) excel in the first hour of new player experience. The node design should help with that.

I think there are more "experienced" content creators for Ashes because of two resons: 1- Experienced Content Creators know what to expect from Intrepid and are based on reality and know what is going to be delivered. 2- Newer Content Creators don't know what to expect from a GameDev like Intrepid, and more importantly they want to grow channels for hundreds of thousands numbers and you can't grow to a channel with a game that quite literally doesn't exist. I think once the game launches I think we will see a lot more younger Content Creators and we will see Content Creators with hundreds of thousands, if not millions 😎

It’s easy to explain. It’s because we tend to understand what MMORPG’s are supposed to be and we have seen some die due to bad management. Might have had great mechanics and thoughts behind it , like Rift. Or Wild Stars. I Loved SW’s Galaxies. But we thought with better technology we’d see that future MMO’s that never manifested.

my answer before watching the video (28, soon to be 29) is that the younger generations dont have the patience and the ability to put off immediate gratification. Are there some? Sure but the exceptions dont make the rule. Far to many are used to games giving them quick over stimulating gameplay that even the idea of having to grind or walk for an hour to get somewhere seems like a boring or for some overwhelming task

"one of the big ones". What other upcoming MMOs are a big one? As far as I can tell all upcoming MMOs are either short on resources to make a competitive(in the market) MMO, or they're from a company who has fallen down the trap of modern day game dev business(what any respectable MMO'er is trying to escape). The amount of passion and seriousness coming from Intrepid FAR FAR FAR exceeds anything I've seen in the works and they've got the resources to realize their vision. Even Ghostcrawler(maybe the most notable MMO dev), working on the RIOT MMO, hasn't even got a fraction of the passion, dedication and knowledge that Steven(backed by his team) is bringing to the table. AoC is on an entirely different level.

I'm not old- you're old! So I teach these young kids and I talk video games with them frequently. I think Virtek got the closest on this one, younger generations are cultivated towards quick instant gratification, I've had students try to play mmo's and it seems they always look for the boost, are enticed to buy gold, etc. The desire to build on something and develop something is gone, I think about people who work on cars as a comparable example of this. While I think the competitive-ness of Ashes will attract the young kids, I don't think they have the ability to stick around. The reason why all the Ashes content creators are so old is we're the only ones able to invest in the A2 and the game isn't anywhere near launch so there's no way for the poor college kids to invest in something so far out.

Always hearing people say the mmorpg is a dying genre. I disagree, I think people like to say it because THEY are fed up with every mmo and just assume others are as well. They don't want to play anymore so they assume others don't as well. I think MMOs have slowed down for sure. But far from dead. Every day on steam FFXIV, ESO, New world, BDO average 20-30k players each. ESO and FFXIV have console versions which steam doesn't track so there are sure to be thousands more. And that's not counting wow. Blizzard doesn't release player counts. But looking at warcraftlogs, if you add up all the Mythic + parses from the last 2 weeks its over 10 million dungeon runs. And that's just dungeons and just people recording logs, it doesn't count raids, leveling players, people that didn't run a dungeon etc. Hell, there are over 400k logged dungeons in just the last 24 hours. There are still millions of players daily between all platforms logging into MMORPGs. And sure you always get the guy that says "They are just playing because there is nothing else to do". We need to not assume so much. Is it so hard to believe that they could possibly enjoy the game? Rant over 🤣

I mean it would be a lie saying there is a MMO worth giving up life for. Wow is ok but old and the one who killed every other MMOs. Very few innovations and kinda boring FF14 is just a solo game with some instance dungeons. New World is dead, I know personally better devs than in their studios, they don't even play at their games and they showed it. BDO is p2w GW2 is kinda a good one TESO is broken and unbalanced Albion is isometric view MMOs are clearly not very interesting rn, and I would do everything for a good sand park social interaction driven MMO, that's why we are here.

It took you old fogeys a lot of old man hemming and hawing to come up with answers, none of which amounted to anything. I'm older than all of you so let me answer it for you: 1. AoC has been around so long anyone who has been interested in it for awhile has to be old, and more pertinently 2. To get hands on you have to pay $$$ which only old geezers like me can both afford and don't have higher priorities for our hard won dollars, and 3. When it comes to games the younger generation(s) are more savvy - plus have a lot of options - and aren't going to pay a lot of mind to a game (much less money) until they can actually get to play it, which means they'll be a lot older when that happens.
